Anonymous claims PSN breach, 10M accounts allegedly accessed

Uh-oh, the Anonymous hacker group has claimed to have hacked the PlayStation Network, or PSN, and downloaded 50GB worth of database that contain user accounts and passwords. From the look of it, a lot of emails are from Sweden, Russia and other European countries. It’s not clear if U.S user information was on the server that was breached, but this does not sound good.

At the moment, Sony has not commented yet, and they are without a doubt looking into the matter. As for users, they were pretty angry because the last time PSN was breached, there quite a lot of downtime and all of this was extremely inconvenient for players.

If you want to see if your email has been exposed, the hackers have uploaded the information to http://pastebin.com/HUjZPaF3 In the meantime, it is clear that spammers are having a field day, so you can expect to see a wave of spam/fishing following shortly. The Jebberish on the left side represent the encrypted usernames and passwords. Depending on how it was encrypted, it may or may not take a while to decrypt. Let’s hope that Sony used some sort of unique key per user.

Update 1:08pm PT: Sony has contacted Ubergizmo with this statement:

“We’ve confirmed that the recent claim that PlayStation Network was illegally hacked and that customer passwords and email addresses were accessed is completely false.”  (a Sony representative)

Rock Band Blitz hits XBLA and PSN in August

Harmonix has announced that its downloadable Rock Band spin-off Rock Band Blitz will release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network next month. PS3 owners will get it first, with the game releasing for PSN on August 28. Those playing on Xbox 360 will have to wait a day longer, as the XBLA version doesn’t launch until the following day, August 29. Rock Band Blitz will cost $14.99 on PSN and 1200 MSP on Xbox Live Arcade.

Despite having that familiar Rock Band look, Rock Band Blitz is something of a departure for the series. Instead of using those clunky instrument controllers required by Rock Band proper, Rock Band Blitz has players using a standard controller to hit the notes. Truth be told, Rock Band Blitz seems to have more in common with Frequency and Amplitude, two earlier Harmonix titles, than it does with Rock Band.

If you’re like me and you’ve spent more money than you care to count on DLC tracks for the Rock Band series, never fear – Harmonix says that all of those DLC tracks will work in Rock Band Blitz. The game itself comes with 20 tracks, four of which were announced today: “So Far Away” by Avenged Sevenfold, “Jungle Boogie” by Kool & The Gang, “We Are Young” by Fun, and “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. Finally, all of the songs found in Rock Band Blitz are also playable in Rock Band 3, so that’s a nice little bonus in exchange for your $15.

PlayStation Cloud : how Gaikai may change Sony Computer Entertainment forever

PSN logoAs you may have seen yesterday, Sony has acquired online gaming company Gaikai, which is specialized in executing games on powerful remote servers and streaming them to any types of clients, from thin set top boxes to tablets or computers. In the short term, this won’t do much more than making PC games accessible from a PS3, this acquisition will open a new world of possibilities for Sony.

For example, you can imagine that Sony will make PlayStation games available to more people. The same technology can also be used to stream movies (+music) and build a service such as Vudu, which can be easily deployed on any TV and devices because most of the user-interface code is executed on remote servers. This is Sony’s best acquisition in a long time. (more…)

YouTube for PS Vita now ready, will help you watch more kitties than Killzone

YouTube for PS Vita goes live, will help you watch games more than play them

Sony promised us a YouTube app for the PlayStation Vita this month, and although it’s just sliding under the wire, that app is here. The viewer as it hits the console will play videos over 3G and WiFi as well as in HD quality, if you’ve got the bandwidth to burn. Most of the basics for favorites and searches are covered, including a small player that will let you hop between clips. There’s no mention of subscriptions for those perpetually addicted to Maru or Ray William Johnson, however. That quirk aside, the free app is due to swing by the PlayStation Store any moment now, so fire up your Vita and get ready to watch game strategy videos distracting pet clips on that OLED-packing handheld.
