EU raids Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom and Orange offices in data probe

Orange, Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom offices raided in EU data probe

Woop, woop, that’s the sound of the… European Commission? EU officials (figuratively) kicked in the doors of Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom and Orange’s European headquarters this week. The trio are being investigated after ISP Cogent Communications alleged that they are deliberately blocking data-hungry services — much like Cogent’s earlier complaint about Comcast. The trio are pleading their innocence while the case continues, and hoping that investigators don’t mess with the office furniture too much.

Remember When Big Brother’s Only Weapon Was CCTV?

Remember When Big Brother's Only Weapon Was CCTV?

When I was a kid, there was no image more closely associated with surveillance than the CCTV camera. Big Brother is watching, we were warned. The government is keeping tabs on you with video cameras on every street corner. Soon they may even install cameras in your home, they insisted. Honestly, that may have been preferable to what we ended up getting.

SF, NY prosecutors launching ‘Save our Smartphones’ anti-theft initiative today

SF, NY prosecutors launching Save our Smartphones antitheft initiative today

The Attorney General of New York and District Attorney of San Francisco are teaming up with police and government groups to cut down on smartphone-related muggings. George Gascón (SF) and Eric Schneiderman (NY) will announce “Save our Smartphones” at a summit in New York later today, after meeting with representatives from Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft. The scheme aims to introduce a universal “kill switch,” similar to iOS 7’s Activation Lock, that’ll render stolen phones worthless across all makes and models — preventing this sort of thing from becoming a hazard of modern living.

E3 organizers set the fuzz on OUYA over parking lot cheekiness

E3 organizers set the feds on OUYA over parking lot cheekiness

The next-gen console war is truly on and E3 is the battleground. As IGN found out, though, fighting spirits have extended beyond the walls of the Los Angeles Convention Center, where Android console-makers OUYA and the ESA (which runs E3) are embroiled in an ongoing tussle. It started when OUYA decided to attend E3 “on its own terms,” setting up a stand in a parking lot opposite the Expo to attract attention without paying E3 fees. The ESA responded by renting its own parking spaces and using trucks to obscure OUYA’s stand. But for every patch, a hack is soon to follow, and OUYA then rented additional spaces in front of the trucks to put up some banners. The ESA then called the cops, who turned up on their monster Segways to see what was what. After checking OUYA’s permits, the LAPD were satisfied nothing illegal was going on and split. Apparently, OUYA founder Julie Uhrman has contacted the ESA to talk it out, but hasn’t received a response. Perhaps the association is too busy planning its next attack, but Uhrman is prepared: “If ten more trucks show up, we’ll come up with another idea. I have a few up my sleeve.”

Ex-cop Builds a Robot, Surprisingly Not Robocop

When you retire, you have to keep busy. Otherwise life could get pretty boring. Mark Haygood retired as a Baltimore police officer after two decades and now he keeps himself busy building robots – robots made from old appliances.

hex bot

His first creation is HEX, a four-foot tall self-standing robot that took four years to build. HEX has fully-functional hands, arms, and legs. And even though it isn’t completely stable, it can walk. Mark is constantly working on perfecting HEX.

HEX looks pretty well designed considering that he was made from a bunch of old appliances and toys. That definitely says something about Mark’s skill. We will have to wait and see what else Mark comes up with, but he is off to a great start with HEX.

Undercover Cops Are Selling iPhones On The Street To Get People To Stop Buying Stolen iPhones

In San Francisco police are trying a new tactic to disincentivize people from buying stolen iPhones: they’re trapping them in undercover stings. Wearing plain clothes, the officers are going around certain city areas and selling iPhones which they readily indicate are stolen. When someone tries to buy one, they make an arrest. More »
