Security researchers dissect Flame's handling program, find three new viruses 'at large'

It seems that there’s more than two out-of-control computer viruses roaming around the Middle East. Security researchers think that a further three could be operating “at large,” with one positively identified on machines in Iran and Lebanon. Teams from Symantec and Kaspersky have separately found that the Flame malware had the electronic equivalent of a “handler,” a program called NEWSFORYOU, which is also in charge of three viruses that are code-named SP, SPE and IP. The two teams have been unsuccessful in finding a sample of the trio for analysis and despite finding a cache of data on a command-and-control server, decoding it is “virtually impossible.” While both security companies have declined to point a finger as to their origin, Reuters’ sources suggest the United States, while The Washington Post has been told that the project was a joint-enterprise with Israel — in keeping with the existing narrative that the pair were behind Stuxnet.

Huawei complains about US spying allegations, implies McCarthy-style victimization

Huawei complains about US spying allegations, implies McCarthystyle victimhood“We must remember always that accusation is not proof.” So begins a report sponsored and published by Huawei, heavily quoting a 1954 US Senate report that condemned McCarthy and his anti-Communist hysteria. The document is a prelude to Huawei’s forthcoming public testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives’ Intelligence Committee, and its message is clear: the Chinese manufacturer is tired of how it’s being treated in America, where numerous telecoms contracts have been blocked over “national security concerns.” Huawei wants to be seen as an “opportunity” rather than a “threat,” claiming it has scope to expand its 140,000 workforce and would love to create more jobs in America — if only the US government would remove its “roadblock.”

Many other arguments are put forward, but some of the most interesting paragraphs deal with the background of Huawei’s founder, Ren Zhengfei. The document claims that Zhengfei has been “tragically misunderstood” and that his alleged roles in the People’s Liberation Army and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are “unsubstantiated.” The report doesn’t deny those memberships ever existed, but instead downplays their significance — for example by insisting that the CCP is now focused on promoting “private entrepreneurs” and “democratization.” We admittedly stopped reading at that point, but if you’d like to continue then the full 78-page PDF, written by Dan Steinbock of the India, China and America Institute, is linked below.

Funny Pothole Caricatures Push Russian Politicians to Do Their Jobs

Where I’m from, most politicians only spring into action when it’s time for re-elections. Other than that, they’re busy plastering their faces on signs and tarpaulins of ongoing projects all around the city while failing to do what they’re really supposed to do: serve.

Apparently, Russian’s politicians do that too. The condition of a lot of roads in Yekaterinburg, Russia was pretty bad and all the potholes were starting to get on people’s nerves. It got so bad that a local blog, URA.RU, took things into their own hands.

Pothole Caricatures

In the dead of night, they tasked Voshkod, an agency, to draw caricatures of the officials’ faces on the pockmarked streets, with their mouths right over the potholes.

And to make a long story short, their stunt actually worked, with work on the roads beginning shortly afterwards. Now this is street activism.

Google live election hub streams DNC and RNC action

If you’re ready for 2012 Election Day here in the United States, you’re more than likely fooling yourself – that’s why Google has prepared a lovely online voter guide for us all. This guide takes us back to the original presidential nomination convention in 1832 and brings the original sense of democracy back to the common online citizen with a history lesson that eventually leads to your understanding of how to get in on the fun. Google is also providing both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention with live video streams and social networking so you can stay involved from start to finish.

This Google involvement in the presidential nominations for both of the top two camps as well as the eventual coverage of the final Election Day later this year will have the big G on-the-ground all the way up to your phone. You’ll want to start with the Google Politics and Elections site for up-to-date Google News, YouTube videos and live feeds, and Google+ social networking content on the election process.

Also be sure to see Google’s Live Election Hub for your collection of both national political conventions as well as content between there and the end of the show. You’ll be able to watch debates there as well, and the election night itself will be covered by Google in real time. This interface works from your desktop computer in a web browser of from your mobile device – tablets and smartphone toting a web browser too, that is.

If you’re wondering who you might want to vote for, Google has an Online Voter Guide for you to peruse. There’s a specific place for those of you voting in special situations like military or overseas for whatever reason. This set of sections will lead you straight to information about your different rules and deadlines as well.

Google is also currently in the process of developing new ways for voters to interact with campaigns and the political and public heads between here and final election day. Be sure to stay tuned to SlashGear as well to keep up to day on big drops!

How Beneficial Will Be The New 54.5 Mpg Fuel Efficiency Standards?

Obama Administration has been diligently working on making the auto-industry more fuel-efficient. President Obama has been pursuing the very policy since 2009 and a new set of fuel efficiency standards was due to arrive sometime this year. Now, it is here.

The new fuel efficiency standards seek to enhance the mileage of cars and light-duty trucks to upto 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025. While that may sound like an ambitious aim, the auto industry is already on the way. By 2016, the aim is to hit the 34.1 mpg target and then continue the progress. (more…)

Xbox 360 to offer hub for 2012 election coverage

Starting later on this month (Monday, August 27 to be exact), the Xbox 360 dashboard will transform into a hub for coverage of the 2012 presidential election. Microsoft announced today that it will be providing Xbox 360 owners with full election coverage, and from the sounds of things, those who are interested will be able to find all the information they could ever want about the election come August 27.

Microsoft isn’t offering this election hub by itself, however, as it has a teamed up with a number of different companies to deliver all-encompassing coverage. Users will be able to register to vote through the dashboard thanks to the Rock the Vote campaign, while Face the Facts USA will be offering information on both candidates. There will also be “live daily polling” provided by the folks at YouGov, so Xbox 360 users will be able to keep up with the rest of the community’s thoughts on the election.

Microsoft has also teamed up with NBC News to deliver daily video content on the election. Perhaps most importantly, Xbox users will be able to watch the three planned presidential debates along with live streams from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions through their consoles. That’s where YouGov’s live polling comes in, as Xbox 360 owners will be able to vote in polls during the debates.

As always, there’s a bit of a catch: most of this coverage will be available to all Xbox Live users, but the really important stuff – the debates and the coverage from NBC – will only be available to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Other than the Gold requirement (which was to be expected, really), this sounds like a pretty great way to get gamers involved in the election, and the information from Face the Facts USA will undoubtedly be appreciated while the candidates are offering their own take on things during the debates. Will you be watching the debates through your Xbox 360?

‘Vote!!! the Game’ lets you beat up presidential candidates

Infinity Blade developer Chair Entertainment has a new game it would like you to check out, but this one is quite a bit different than the games we’re used to seeing from Chair. Dubbed Vote!!! the Game, this new iOS title allows players to assume the role of their preferred presidential candidate and the proceed to beat the tar out of their opponent. The presidency apparently won’t be determined by who is the better orator, but rather by who is more skilled with an ice cream cone or a rubber chicken.

As silly as it sounds, the game does tie-in to the actual election, which is coming up here in just a few short months. Chair has announced that it will be giving a portion of the proceeds to the Rock the Vote organization, and indeed, this game is geared toward getting more citizens registered to cast their vote when November rolls around. In fact, players can even get registered right from the home screen of the game, which will no doubt come in handy.

Vote!!! is built on the engine that Chair used to build Infinity Blade, and the goal is to knock your opponent down without taking a hit. You rack up more points the longer you go without being hit, which in turn leads to more virtual votes you can cast for your preferred candidate. As a fun little play on the actual election, Chair will keep a running tally of each candidate’s votes so players can see who’s ahead and who’s lagging behind with the user base. Have a look at the game’s official trailer below to get a better idea of how the game plays.

Like Infinity Blade, players will swipe the screen to attack and use buttons to defend or dodge. Players can earn coins to unlock new weapons and outfits for Obama and Romney, with coins also being available to purchase with real world money. Vote!!! is available for free right this very minute on the iOS App Store, so if you’re a politics junkie, be sure to give it a spin.
