Everyone wants a pool in their backyard until they realize they never actually swim in it. Those neglected pools become nothing more than holes in the ground filled with cloudy water that act as mosquito magnets. Not this pool though. This outdoor pool is magic. The floors sinks into the ground and it fills itself up with water. Lovely.
If you’re curious about what would happen if a perfectly hit cue ball hit a perfectly aligned pool rack perfectly in the middle, well here’s what it will look like. It’s mathematically perfect. Not even the best pool players in the world, magnet breakers or robots can even get it to look like this.
I’m not sure there’s an explanation for this amazing set of pool tricks other than the guy doing them, professional pool trick shot player Florian Kohler, is just impossibly good at what he does or that Kohler has somehow found a way to coax all of the magnets on Earth to bend balls however he wants so they travel like they have their own brain on the felt. Somehow, the second explanation makes more sense after seeing this teaser for his upcoming trick shot compilation DVD. Balls move and change direction in ways that break physics.
Here’s a trick you can do for your next house party: fill the pool with non-Newtonian fluid and have people run across it, dance all over it, ride their bikes over it and so forth. Like, come on dude, you’re walking on water, how can you not have fun?
You probably have a favorite pool cue, but I don’t care what yours looks like, it is nothing next to this bad boy. Yours stick is a wimp compared to this one. What you’re looking at here is the world’s most expensive pool cue. It looks more like a legendary weapon you might find in Diablo 3 than a pool cue. In fact, if you ever find yourself across the pool table from Satan, you’d better be packing this weapon. I mean cue.
The Intimidator from McDermott Handcrafted Cues is a sight to behold. It started out as an 82-pound piece of solid stainless steel, and took 1,862 man hours to become the pool cue you see here.
Those four bladed wings look pretty dangerous and it also has a genuine Italian obsidian gemstone sphere at the base. It is also inlaid with 24K Gold, has deep relief & French grey scroll engraving. There are over 210 separate inlays, including 112 hand-polished Precious Metal inlays on the handle.
If you’re serious about your pool you’ll need to hustle your opponents for $150,000(USD) before you can afford one.

Turn Your Pool Table Into a Psychedelic Aquarium with Kinect-Powered Projection Effects
Posted in: Today's Chili Pool is a fun game, but with just some colored balls on a plain green field, the spectacle is a little lacking. We’ve already seen how some clever projection can turn anyone into a pool shark, but now OpenPool is taking it a step further by turning pool into a psychedelic rave of a game. More »
Want to know how to make a pool table an attention-grabber on a showroom floor full of highly explosive video games? Try a couple of Kinect cameras, some projectors and a sound system. OpenPool’s an open-source project that’s looking to bring a little multimedia action to the world of billiards. The company had some reps on the floor of SXSW’s Game Expo today, showing off the system, which, at the very least, is most probably unlike any pool game you’ve played.
The system uses two Kinect cameras to detect ball movement, which in turn directs the motion of the projectors — not entirely unlike those floor shows in malls that seem to endlessly fascinate small children. The speakers play sound effects and music in sync with the movement as well, signaling noises when balls drop into the pockets. The company is really excited at the prospect of open-sourcing here, and told us you should probably be able to set up your own system at home for around $10,000, pool table included. For those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy, the Japanese company is working on building full systems for offices and bars. Having Konami as a partner will certainly help it realize that dream. Check out a video of the table in action after the, you know, break.
Pool is simple if you know your geometry. And physics. And have good hand-eye coordination. And while none of those seem that hard on their own, they can be a little tough to put together. But with a little help from tech, it becomes as easy as just keeping your eyes open. More »
