Doxie Go Scanner: For Those Still Dealing with Mounds of Paper

Even though there are apps for using smartphones as portable scanners, they don’t always get all of the details, and it’s tough to get a steady image. That’s one of the reasons why Doxie’s portable scanners are useful for people trying to rid themselves of paper in their offices.

The latest iteration of the Doxie Go is pretty small – about as large as two office staplers. It operates anywhere thanks to a built-in battery and can transmit them wirelessly (with an optional upgrade). You can scan in color or black and white, at 300 dpi or 600 dpi to the internal memory of the device, then transfer them over via USB or insert an EyeFi SD card to automatically transfer the scans over Wi-Fi. While you’ll need to recharge the battery every 100 pages or so, it only takes about 2 hours to juice up.

The flexible scanner mechanism can handle documents ranging in size from business card up to 8.5″x15″ too. Of course, the scanner also comes with software for image correction and OCR for converting scanned images to editable text or PDFs.

The Doxie Go sells for $199(USD). The Wi-Fi card will set you back another $30, which is actually cheaper than you can buy the Eye-Fi Connect X2 for elsewhere. You’ll definitely want to check it out if you’re trying to go paperless.

Clip Mouse Concept: Now Why Didn’t I Think of This?

If you’re like me, you loathe the idea of using a trackpad on your laptop. I grew up using mice, and I’m about 1000 times more efficient using a mouse than a trackpad. So whenever I hit the road, I carry a mouse everywhere I go. But one problem with the mouse is where to put it when you carry around your computer. That’s why I love the idea behind the Clip Mouse.

The concept for the Clip Mouse was designed by Frank Guo for a design competition being put on by Lite-On, and it’s really a cool idea. Basically, the mouse would be made of a curved material that could be easily clipped onto the edge of an ultrabook or other thin laptop, so you can carry both the computer and the mouse with one hand.

Guo envisions a C-shaped mouse that would be easy to grip  and control, offering a touch-based scroll and button capability. The bottom of the mouse would be flat, so it could glide around on a desktop or other even surface, while the inside would be made of a ribbed rubber material, making it safe and easy to clip around your other gadgets.

Currently, the Clip Mouse is still in the concept stages, but I’m hoping that somebody decides to make these. I’d definitely buy one if they ever come out.

Kangaroo Bottle Has a Plastic Pouch for All Your Essential Stuff

Getting enough hydration while you’re in the middle of some strenuous workout or physical activity is important. However, a lot of people I know find having to carry a water bottle a hassle, since they also have to bring their keys, cash, cards, and other essentials with them.

A neat solution? The Kangaroo water bottle.

kangaroo water bottle
It looks like a regular old water bottle, but it’s actually got this handy plastic ‘pouch’ that pops open to reveal a secret compartment where you can store all your other essentials. There isn’t that much space, but it’s big enough to store the stuff that you absolutely have to take with you if your bottle is all you’re going to carry – like when you go running or something. There’s definitely enough room for a key some cash and a credit card or ID, plus 24 ounces or H2O, of course.

Kangaroo bottles are available online from Contigo for $12.99 each.

Doxie One portable scanner now available worldwide

Doxie has announced the worldwide launch of its Doxie One, a portable scanner that doesn’t require a computer. The device was first introduced less than a month ago, and comes in a higher-end model that is wireless as well. The unit is available now worldwide for $149, while the wireless model is a bit more expensive at $199.

Perhaps its best feature, the Doxie One can be used with your iPad with Lightning or a 30-pin SD card reader, making it an excellent mobile scanning option. According to the press release, the unit is the about the size of an empty paper towel roll. Slipping the device into the laptop bag or tucking it away when not in use won’t be much of a challenge.

Setup is simple: the Doxie One plugs into a power outlet and saves scans to an SD card. It comes with an app for sorting and managing scans, including uploading them to backup services and sharing them with friends or colleagues. Scans can be sent to Evernote and Dropbox, for example, and to contacts via iMessage if you’re an Apple user.

Sharing scans via iMessage requires OS X 10.8 and iOS 6. If you decide to grab the Doxie Go model instead, you’ll get the added benefit of a rechargeable battery, giving the device an extra element of portability. The unit is available in multiple colors, including blue, red, purple, yellow, orange, green, black, and pink.

ORA Speaker Wraps Around Your iPad to Give You Surround Sound – Literally

Thanks to it’s less-than-stellar internal speaker, there are a lot of iPad speakers to choose from in the market. Personally, I’ve got my sights set on the ORA. It’s the first of its kind that I’ve seen, and so far, I like what I see.

ora ipad speaker case

It’s basically a speaker that surrounds your entire iPad. Actually, I stand corrected: there are actually eight speakers surrounding the iPad.

Ora Speaker

Now it won’t give you surround sound even though the speakers are all around your tablet, but it will give you decent audio so you and a whole bunch of other people can gather around and watch a movie or two. It also functions as a case for your iPad, and offers an optional front flip-cover that works like Apple’s Smart Cover.

The ORA Speaker is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $99(USD) will get you one, while $129 will get you the speaker along with the matching cover/stand.

Handy Dandy Mouse-Keyboard Combo Fits into Your Pocket

Most of the portable keyboards I’ve seen are too bulky for my taste. Either they’re bigger than the actual device that you want to use it with or they’re twice as thick.

If you’re on the hunt for a portable yet completely functional keyboard for your mobile, then look no further.

compact keyboard mouse 1
Donya’s compact QWERTY Bluetooth keyboard lets you type away without having to worry about your fat fingers hitting other keys (as they usually do on your device’s virtual keyboard.) In addition to working with mobile devices, it can be used with the PS3. It also crams in a clickable touchpad on the side for your Windows and Mac devices.

The best thing – as I’ve mentioned earlier – is its size. Comparable to the size of an iPhone, this portable keyboard  fits easily into your pocket or laptop sleeve without adding much to the bulk.

Plus, it’s reasonably priced. It sells for ¥2999 (~$37 USD.) At the moment, it looks like you’ll have to order one from Japan if you want one, but you can always try and use a service like White Rabbit Express to import one for you.

Misfit Shine Activity Tracker: Beautiful Design, Weird Name

Activity tracking devices are nothing new, but the current offerings have a sporty look, which is expected but may not suit all tastes. If you’re looking for something a bit less conspicuous, check out the Misfit Shine, a new brand of booze security camera night vision goggles wireless activity tracker with a minimalist design.

misfit shine activity tracker

Unlike the brightly-colored bracelets of current competing devices like the Nike FuelBand or Jawbone Up, the Misfit Shine is a tiny aircraft-grade aluminum disc with a clasp (though there is a bracelet attachment provided). You can attach it to the waist of your pants and no one will notice that you’re obsessed with your exercise stats. Speaking of which, the Misfit Shine can track steps, bike pedals and swim strokes. The idea is to pair it with an iOS5.0+ or Android 4.0+ then set a daily goal from within your mobile device. You can then check how close you are to achieving your goal by tapping the Misfit Shine, which will display a number of lighted dots to provide you with a rough estimate.

Because it’s made almost entirely from metal, it doesn’t work using conventional wireless tech. Instead, you place the Misfit Shine directly on the screen of your mobile device to pair it. I wonder how the pairing system really works.

Pledge at least $79 (USD) on its Indiegogo fundraiser to reserve a Misfit Shine, along with a sports wristband. When you become a backer maybe you can convince the inventors to come up with a more descriptive name instead.

Projecteo Instagram Projector: Because Retro Filters Aren’t Hip Enough

You’ve shared your Instagram pictures on Twitter and Facebook. You’ve sent them as actual pictures, stickers and magnets. But that’s not enough. You’re a sharing monster that can’t be stopped. Because I love monsters, here’s something to feed your desire, a tiny projector that uses 35mm film to display and embiggen your pictures.

projecteo instagram projector

Before you can use the Projecteo, you have to use an app to pick pictures that will be “melted” in circular shape on a single frame of 35mm Kodak film. Each frame can hold up to 9 pictures. This will be inserted into a wheel, which you then feed into the Projecteo.

projecteo film

The device can then project the images to up to 2.5-feet-wide using its LED light source (in a darkened room, of course.)

projecteo projector 2

MintDigital, the company behind the Projecteo, have yet to say how much one wheel will cost, although each order of the projector comes with one free wheel. That folks, is the razor and blades business model made even better. Thanks to Kickstarter the inventors managed to convince their customers into paying them before they even buy the proverbial razor. Clever folks.

Obviously Instagram will soon be flooded with pictures of the Projecteo. You can reserve a Projecteo by pledging at least $25 (USD) on Kickstarter. You’ll need to up you pledge to $40 if you’d like the version that’s colored just like an old Rollei P35 slide projector – otherwise, your Projecteo will arrive in solid white.

VMUltra Drive Adds DVD Burner, Hard Drive, USB Ports and SD Reader: The Ultrabook Sidekick

Having a slim and lightweight laptop is great for your back, but the hardware that it’s missing could be bad for your productivity. If you’re missing some of the bells and whistles of your desktop computer, PC and tablet maker Velocity Micro has got your back with the VMUltra Drive.

vmultra drive by velocity micro

Short of a beefier CPU and GPU, the VMUltra Drive is basically everything that’s been cut out of traditional laptops to make the so-called Ultrabooks. In exchange for taking up a USB 3.0 port, this peripheral will give you an 8x DVD±R/RW burner and reader, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port, an SD/SDHC/MMC reader and a hard drive bay that fits 2.5″ SATA drives. You can see more images of the VMUltra Drive on The Verge, but if you’re already throwing money at the screen – I’m keeping some of it! – head to Velocity Micro and pre-order the gadget for $200 (USD).
