Portal 2 PotatOS Plush lights up in a cute way

portal-potato-plushAre potatoes your favorite food? After all, there is nothing quite like some piping hot fries with vinegar and salt on the side. Oh yeah, how about those moments when you are munching on your favorite brand of chips in the cinema? The movie certainly felt a whole lot more engaging, don’t you think so? Well, with the $19.99 Portal 2 PotatOS Plush, you can be sure that you will never look at a jacket or stuffed potato the same way again. This is the huggable version of GLaDOS, and it will arrive with 10 audio clips to get you started.

Fret not about your friends ribbing you about purchasing a rip off or a pirated copy of some Portal-inspired toys, as this is a 100% officially licensed Portal 2 merchandise. The Portal 2 PotatOS Plush resembles the tuber-version of GLaDOS that you actually brought with you around the testing facility in the game, and what’s more, it also sounds a whole lot like her. I am quite sure that Portal fans would have plenty of fun with the pre-loaded 10 snarky phrases that are more than ready to be spoken whenever you press the button. At least this is one potato that is not oily, so it would settle in with the rest of your bed’s plushies quickly. Just make sure there are always a trio of AA batteries around to keep it going.

Intel’s Perceptual Computing demonstrations hands-on (video)

Intels Perceptual Computing demonstrations handson video

We’ve just spent time with Intel’s Mooly Eden, who is spearheading the chip maker’s push into what it’s calling “perceptual computing,” which is using natural and intuitive interactions to control your PC. The company has partnered with Creative on a Kinect-esque 3D depth-camera that can be used to control applications and play games, do faux-green screen broadcasting and collaborate with colleagues. While Microsoft’s motion-tracker is designed to encompass a whole room, Intel’s has a shallower depth of field that’s more suited for close-up work. We got to play with the company’s demos away from the noise of the show floor, as well as playing a gesture-based version of Portal 2 by Sixsense that’s shorn of the controllers that Eden used to demonstrate it in 2011. Interested in seeing what’s likely to appear in what the company promises is the very near future? Head on down past the break.

ThinkGeek Portal 2 Turret Vibrates, Talks and Doesn’t Hate You

If you’re a fan of the video game Portal 2, ThinkGeek has a new USB powered toy just in time for the holiday shopping season that you will love. The USB gadget is called the Portal 2 Sentry Turret USB Desk Defender. This little turret doesn’t actually shoot bullets, but it does activate when it senses motion.

When the turret senses motion, the side pods open revealing tiny faux guns. It also says memorable quotes from the video game, including “target acquired,” “there you are,” “I see you,” ‘preparing to dispense product,” and “activated.” If you can’t imagine for yourself what that looks and sounds like, here’s a demo video:

The toy also says other quips from the game if you move it or knock it over along with vibrating. If you knock the device over it will say things like “critical error,” “shutting down,” “I don’t hate you,” “hey hey hey,” and “malfunctioning.” If it doesn’t sense motion for 30 seconds it will say “are you still there?” This is an officially licensed Portal 2 collectible and is available now for $39.99(USD) over at ThinkGeek.

ThinkGeek’s USB Portal Sentry Turret Will Protect Your Desk, Cake

Chell is standing at the edge of an bottomless pit. She sighs deeply and stares longingly across the void to the immense energy shield. She hoped there is an exit over there. Exit is a funny term, she thought. Though an exit from this room, the door is also an entrance to another puzzle room.

Remembering the warning posters a few steps back, she recalled that falling into this pit would mean game over. Death. She doesn’t want death. Not yet. She was promised cake. And with cake, comes the meeting of this facility’s creator. Then she’d find death.

But first she has to get over this pit. There’s a platform hovering about 20 feet out. She can’t jump that far even if she hadn’t injured her leg two rooms back. But it’s easy enough. With a quick burst of her gun, she makes two portals and falls rather hard onto the platform. Her leg hurts a bit more now. Fan-fucking-tastic, she thought rubbing her calf. With two more bursts of her gun, including one fired at the bottom of the pit to get the right momentum, she soars over the huge energy shield.

The sentry powered up and announced in its feminine robotic voice;

*I see you. Preparing to dispense product.*

A trick. How could she be so careless. It must be my leg, thought Chell as she dived out of the range of the sentry turret. She couldn’t see it. But she knew it was there. Sentry turrets are snarky bastards. But that’s their downfall. If they didn’t talk, she wouldn’t notice them most of the time.

*Are you still there,* called the turret in its squeaky voice.

Yeah, I’m here, thought Chell, nursing her sore leg.

*Are you still there*

Chell gathered her wits, looked around, and decided to make a go at it. Turrets in the past haven’t caused much of an issue. They’re just an inconvenience.

She darts out into the hallway and fires her gun in the general direction of the turret. Misses. The blast from the portal gun sails into the back wall.

*There you are.*

Chell closes her eyes. Sweet death is upon her. She knows it. It came too early. She should have looked before jumping. Maybe it was her bum leg. Who knows.

*I see you*

*Activated*

*There you are*

Huh, she thought. Maybe I did hit it.

The turret is talking but Chell is standing there, shoulders slumped in defeat but she’s still breathing. She’s not dead. Chell slowly starts to move down the lone hallway. The exit door is getting close. The turret is still talking to her.

*Preparing to dispense product*

She walks a bit closer and sees it.

There, standing in front of the exit door is a small turret. It can’t be more than 7.5-inches tall. It’s harmless besides its annoying voice. It doesn’t shoot anything. Chell notices it’s connected to an old Dell Latitude notebook via USB.

Chell smiles and it feels good. She hasn’t done that for many rooms. She doesn’t unplug the little toy but simply knocks it over with her shoe as she confidently walks the 10 feet to the exit door.

*Hey, hey, hey*

Startled, Chell turns around. Oh, she thought, it’s just mimicking what happens when a real turret falls overs. Cute.

*I don’t hate you*

Chell smiles again as she presses the button on the elevator to take her to the next room. Maybe I’m getting near the end, she thought. Maybe the cake will be in the next room.

—–

In a distant room Blue is watching Chell’s progress on a wall of monitors. He feels satisfied with his little purchase from ThinkGeek– that is, as much as a robot can feel anything. The little prank went well. She smiled. The USB desktop turret only cost him $39.99 but it brought a bit of happiness to Chell’s existence. A good purchase.

Blue turns his attention back to the monitors. Chell is not going to make it out of the next room.

Portal 2 In Motion DLC released

Fans of Portal 2, we are harbingers of good news – it seems that the Portal 2 In Motion DLC is now available over at PSN. The Portal 2 In Motion DLC is a campaign which was specially designed by our team at Sixense, where it fully intends to take advantage of the PlayStation Move controller. Chances are, downloading this DLC will see you enjoy a new kind of gaming experience, where it requires you to think out of the box as you and the PlayStation Move motion controller work as a team.

Sixense designed a trio of new motion mechanics for Portal 2 In Motion, and there was plenty of work done to tune the entire experience, making it feel as though it is a natural extension of your body right there on the screen. Touted as the “One-to-One” mechanic, players are able to manipulate objects as though they were held in the player’s own hand. You are now able to use One-to-One in order to change the object’s position and orientation simply by moving and rotating the Move controller.

Have you given Portal 2 In Motion DLC a go already, and if you have, how do you find your experience so far?

Portal 2 ‘In Motion’ DLC packaged with Move update

For fans of the video game Portal 2, you will be pleased to hear that Move support will be included in the Portal 2 download on the PlayStation 3 for free this coming November 6th, according to developer Sixense. Sixense hopes to keep current fans happy while roping in new ones by releasing a level pack titled ‘In Motion’, where this PS3 exclusive DLC’s main focus would be to make full use of the motion gaming experience with PS Move, while introducing a fair number of new mechanics for Portal 2 fans – something that will keep the franchise fresh without looking as though it has been rehashed over and over again.

The Blu-Ray Portal 2 version will also be on the receiving end of a free patch that will deliver “a touch of the motion experience provided by Sixense.” Some of Sixense’s motion tech and features will include 1:1 control of objects, moving and reorienting placed portals, and scaling cubes. If you want to pick up the ‘In Motion’ DLC for Portal 2, it will set you back by just $9.99, although PS+ members will be eligible for a 30% discount during the November 6th launch. Will you be picking up the new Portal 2 In Motion DLC when it arrives early next week?

Portal 2 Miniature Replica Portal Gun

Have you played the game Portal and its sequel? I would strongly recommend you set up a gaming rig to give it a go if you haven’t done so already, considering how both titles in the series have already shaped up to be classics in their own right. Well, for folks who love collecting all sorts of items that have to do with the Portal series itself, here is the $59.99 Portal 2 Miniature Replica Portal Gun that you can have resting on top of your bookshelf or in your display cabinet that will certainly get other geeks who drop by your place to drool over in lust.

Of course, this is not just any static replica, as it is capable of lighting up as well as sounding just like the Portal gun found in the game itself, except that it comes in a shrunken form factor, as though the science lab had accidentally found a way to miniaturize the Portal gun. A three way switch allows you to choose between the orange of blue LED, which will in turn correspond with the actual sound effects whenever your finger gets heavy and pulls the trigger. Just make sure there are three AA batteries hanging around somewhere just in case you run out of “pew pew” moments.

Your Portal gun isn’t as cool as Hack-a-Day’s Portal gun (which actually levitates a companion cube)

Your Portal gun isn't as cool as HackaDay's Portal gun which actually levitates a companion cube

There you were, thinking your NECA-produced Portal gun replica was super neat all on its own. Well, okay — it is — but wouldn’t it be even cooler if you could use it to make a baby companion cube levitate in mid-air with it? That question is exactly what lead to Hack a Day’s creation of just such a device, as seen in the video below the break. By reappropriating a magnetic floating globe’s parts and attaching said parts to both the gun and a homemade companion cube, Hack a Day were able to recreate at least part of the magic Chell experiences in her Aperture Science adventures. Of course, if you move the gun too much, the companion cube will fall out. Just think what that does to its psyche! You monster.

Valve taunts us with prospect of official Portal 2 sentry turret replica video

A Holy Grail of gamer memorabilia is the Portal turret replica — as much a tech toy as proof that you can sing “Want You Gone” from memory. It’s already been coveted when made in small batches by fans, so you can imagine the hysteria when Valve Software itself posts a teaser video (found after the break) at its store’s Facebook page showing what looks to be a near life-size, computer-linked version of Aperture Science’s typical sentry from Portal 2, minus the laser targeting and live machine guns. After that, however, we’re left to guess whether or not it’s just a decoration for Valve’s offices or a commercial product to buy alongside a Companion Cube plushie. We’ve asked Valve about providing more details in the near future and will let you know if the developer is any more talkative than its robot guards.
