Wi-Fi Poster Provides Mobile Hotspot Capability

Wi Fi Poster Provides Mobile Hotspot CapabilityWe more or less take Wi-Fi connectivity for granted these days, especially with the easy accessibility in public areas, including your local Starbucks. Well, the thing is, there might just be a new method of spreading the goodness of Wi-Fi connectivity in public areas and spaces without missing a beat, and this new innovation is known as the Wi-Fi poster, where it is being shown off in South Korea at this point in time, which could very well point to a new and growing trend that intends to draw Wi-Fi users closer to Hollywood.

The Wi-Fi Poster will work just like it is named, where mobile users will be able to enjoy wireless access whenever they remain in close proximity to a particular movie poster. Creative agency Cheil is the one behind this idea for South Korea film studio CJ Entertainment, where Wi-Fi Posters will make use of the name of the film that is currently being promoted for the Wi-Fi network, and once users are connected, they can check out the associated trailers as well as more details on the movie directly on their respective mobile devices.

Each one is digitally printed on a 250g off-white textured cardstock, and has sort of an aged parchment look to its background. Best of all, the complete set will only cost you $50 (USD). Then add on five cheap black frames, and you’ll have a complete art collection for less than 100 bucks.

Remember that part where I said “if you have spare room?” Well even if you don’t, I think you should clear off a wall for these now.

Mixed up Mickey Mouse

Who’s the leader of the club that’s made for you and me? M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E! But did you know that when Mickey Mouse isn’t leading the Mouseketeers, he’s going through life masquerading as other animated characters? At least that’s what I’ve been led to believe by these amusing Mickey mashups by artist Nicholas “Harshness” Hyde.

mickey pikachu

The series envisions Mickey assuming the form of other iconic characters, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Papa Smurf, Snoopy, Bugs Bunny and Garfield the cat. My personal fave is Pikachu, so that’s why he got the big hero image above.

They’re available as prints from Harshness’ Etsy shop, though they’re a little tricky to find – but it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other cool designs to keep you occupied over there while you poke around.

Pokémon Eye Chart: Gotta See ‘Em All

Here’s a clever eye chart that replaces the letters with silhouettes of various Pokémon. It’s a bit deceptive though, because even if you have perfect vision you can’t catch them all. The bottom ones are more pixel monsters than pocket monsters. Then again the actual poster is 12″ x 18″ so maybe they’re all discernible there.

I bet Brock wouldn’t even be able to see Pikachu. Head to DesignNoy’s Etsy page and pay $12 (USD) to order the Pokémon eye chart.

Ukiyo-e Heroes Woodblock Prints: More OG than Pixel Art

We’ve featured Jed Henry’s Ukiyo-e style prints of videogame characters before. Now’s your chance to own printed versions of his amazing art, featuring characters from popular franchises including Super Mario Bros., Zelda and Street Fighter.

ukiyo e heroes woodblock prints by jed henry and dave bull

Jed Henry is offering all 12 of his designs in digital print forms. But he’s also working with a woodblock print maker named David Bull to make woodblock prints by hand, i.e. the way Ukiyo-e were made centuries ago.

Here’s Bull making the first woodblock print of Henry’s art:

As you can see it’s quite a painstaking process, which is why Henry has set up a Kickstarter fundraiser. A pledge of at least $40 (USD) gets you a digital print (you can choose which of Henry’s designs to order) while you’ll have to cough up $135 to get a handmade woodblock print.

Currently only the Mario Kart print has a woodblock proof, i.e. template, but Henry did say that they’ll make proofs for the other designs if they exceed their $10,000 goal. Thankfully as of this writing they’ve already gathered more than $50,000 in pledges, and that’s with 28 days to go. I think it’s safe to say we can expect more designs for the woodblock prints.

Rare Star Wars Poster Looks Stupid, Worth Thousands

There are a lot of rare Star Wars collectibles that are worth money, but usually they are toys and costumes and the like. Some obscure items like this 1978 promotional poster you see here are also worth a lot for some reason. The poster shows C-3PO and R2-D2 carrying musical instruments. It basically looks ridiculous, but despite that, it’s expected to sell for between $5,000 and $8,000 at auction.

star wars concertThe poster was created to promote The Star Wars Symphonic Suite by composer John Williams. So why is it worth so much? Well, it’s rare to begin with and it is also signed by George Lucas. Plus it was designed by John Alvin, who made some of the best movie posters ever made like Blade Runner, E.T., and Gremlins for example.

If you have the money and like the poster, now is your chance to own it. Head on over to Paul Fraser Collectibles for more information on the auction.
