LG Made a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Smartphone Display with 538 PPI

Hot diggity. LG just announced an insane 5.5-inch smartphone screen that has pixels that must be made from some sort of mixture between dense diamond sparkles and unicorn blood paint. More seriously, the 5.5-inch AH-IPS LCD display’s resolution is 2,560 x 1,440 (Quad HD) and packs 538 pixels per inch. That makes it the highest resolution and ppi for a smartphone panel.

Android 4.3 source code reveals support for 4K resolution

Android 4.3 source reveals support for 4K resolution

We’ve seen Android run on anything from low-resolution smartwatches to high-PPI phones and tablets, including the new 1920 x 1200-pixel Nexus 7 Google launched earlier this week. To make this possible, the mobile OS supports a number of pixel densities for app content — from 120PPI (LDPI / Low DPI) to 480PPI (XXHDPI / Extra Extra High DPI). Close examination of the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) source code reveals the addition of a 640PPI (XXXHDPI / Extra Extra Extra High DPI) pixel density, which — according to the comments in the code — is intended for 4K televisions. Does this mean we’ll begin to see Android devices with 640PPI Ultra HD displays? Perhaps, but considering 480PPI is overkill on handsets, this is most likely designed to make image assets and fonts, such as the Google TV UI, readable on 4K screens when viewed from a distance.

Tech’s New Most Meaningless Spec: PPI

HTC’s new Droid DNA smartphone has plenty of qualities that make it intriguing. It has a quad-core Snapdragon chipset. It crams a 5-inch display in a body nearly the size of a One X or Galaxy S III. Its Super LCD 3 technology trumps the Super LCD 2 that made the HTC 8x display so lovely. By all accounts it’s a wonderful device. More »

Sharp begins production of 1080p smartphone displays: 443 ppi crammed into a 5-inch LCD

Layoffs and loans may be dominating our Sharp coverage at the moment, but that just makes this type of news all the sweeter. The company has announced its LCD panel type 5 — a 5-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display packing a Retina-busting 443 ppi (just trumping LG’s similar 440 ppi LCD). An outcome of its layer-reducing CG-Silicon technology, the smartphone-targeted screen goes into full-scale production this month and will be shown off at CEATEC Japan this very week. We’ll try to give it eyes-on treatment at the show, but you can rub your hands together sinisterly in the meantime and just think about the glorious devices which will bear it.

Microsoft seals Perceptive Pixel deal, welcomes PPI team to the Office Division

Microsoft seals Perceptive Pixel deal, welcomes PPI team to the Office Division

In case you haven’t noticed, Microsoft’s been in a blissful shopping mood lately — and while we already knew the company had snatched up the creator of that enormous 82-inch touchscreen, today’s the day a more formal introduction is taking place. Via its Official Microsoft Blog, the Redmond-based outfit is suitably welcoming the Perceptive Pixel team aboard the Office Division, also announcing that PPI’s Founder, Jeff Han, will be joining as a “general manager” and reporting to Kurt DelBene. Naturally, we’re still wondering what exactly the acquisition will bring to the table, but if Perceptive Pixel’s previous doings are any indication of what’s to come, we can expect some more delightful novelties to come out of Microsoft’s HQ in the hopefully-not-so-distant future.
