ShopLocket Launches Pre-Order Platform To Help Bridge The Gap Between Crowdfunding And Shipping

There’s an increasing opportunity in helping hardware startups bring their products to market, and Toronto ecommerce startup ShopLocket has identified a key area in that process where they might be able to help out, and pick up some new business in the process. The company is introducing its new pre-order platform at the Glazed Wearable conference in San Francisco today, giving hardware startups and product-based companies a way to book sales of devices before they ever hit the production lines.

Often companies like Pebble will launch on Kickstarter, bringing in considerable interest from an early adopter crowd during a campaign that could span a month or two. But then there’s a big gap between the end of those campaigns and the actual ship date of their product, and in that gap you run the risk of losing a lot of the publicity steam built up during the crowdfunding phase.

Pebble launched its own pre-order portal, and others like the Thalmic Labs MYO armband just started right out the gate with an open-ended pre-order period, but often that can take a lot of work and building your own platform, as Lockitron did. ShopLocket wants to make all of those things easier, adding support for pre-order campaigns to its lightweight storefront platform.

“ShopLocket can either be used as an alternative to Kickstarter or Indiegogo for an initial launch, [or] it can be used after a crowdfunding campaign to allow companies to continue collecting pre-orders,” ShopLocket founder and CEO Katherine Hague explained in an interview. “When used as a replacement to traditional crowdfunding platforms, ShopLocket could be considered an elegant plug-and-play alternative to something like Selfstarter [Lockitron’s in-house tool, which it released for others to use].”

Already, ShopLocket’s platform has been quietly helping companies debut and build continued interest in their products. ECG identification tech wearable Nymi used it to fund their device Kickstarter-style, and others including Nomiku and GlassUp are now running their pre-order campaigns with it, after having successfully raised funds on other platforms. Selfstarter campaigns require ample setup and knowledge of code, while ShopLocket’s system is fully customizable with a graphic interface that even total coding amateurs can manage.

To power the payments part of its new service, ShopLocket has turned to Stripe, which it chose over competing options like PayPal and Amazon Payments for a number of reasons.

“For our sellers, the process of creating a Stripe account is incredibly easy [and] we are in the process of further optimizing the seller flow, so that sellers don’t even have to sign up with Stripe until they actually want to start charging on pre-orders — something not possible with PayPal or Amazon,” Hague said. “For buyers, Stripe is actually a more accessible platform than PayPal or Amazon, which generally require accounts to make a purchase. Stripe will allow buyers to checkout with a simple credit card form, no account required.”

Stripe also offers native design integration, so buyers aren’t shuttled away to a separate site and then shuttled back in to complete the transaction, which is a big advantage in terms of decreasing cart abandonment rates and generally providing an experience that businesses can control in every respect.

I wondered whether this emerging market segment might not be a little too niche for ShopLocket to focus much attention on, but Hague says there’s plenty of interest already, and that’s also growing at a rapid clip. So far, they’ve found over 500 projects launched launched in products and hardware every month, which represent tens of millions of dollars raised.

“This represents only a small segment of the overall market,” Hague adds. “For these companies, ShopLocket is a better solution than a traditional hosted storefront for the next phase of their business. We let them use any website, including their existing one, to grow from pre-orders to a full shopping cart over time. We believe that the next billion dollar storefront platform will be born from serving this rapidly growing market of new product creators.”

Both AT&T and Sprint made their announcements regarding when you can get an HTC One and for how much on their respective networks. Fortunately for AT&T, they got the jump on Sprint as they’re the first one out of the gate to offer pre-orders to both its current and new subscribers today.

The add more salt into the wounds of Sprint, AT&T is also going to hold exclusivity to the 64GB version of the HTC One, meaning Sprint customers would just have to make due with the 32GB version, although we’re sure that will be enough space for the everyday smartphone user. Luckily, that seems to be the only difference between ordering an HTC One on either AT&T or Sprint as both carriers allow their customers to choose from a silver or black device. (more…)

AT&T to launch HTC One on April 5th for $250

True to form, carriers won’t stop being so coy about the HTC One. We still haven’t received any official information regarding the flagship’s pricing or specific availability, but thanks to one of our eagle-eyed tipsters, we at least have a solid idea of AT&T’s particular plans for the device. The operator is set to begin pre-orders of the One this week, with the 32GB flavor being offered in both silver and black hues for $249.99. The exclusive 64GB model likely won’t be ready in time for early adopters, but it’ll go for $299.99 once it does show up on store shelves. Our tipster tells us pre-sales will begin in the retail channel on April 5th, while pending marketing materials indicate the One can be pre-ordered online the day before. If this is the case, we expect it won’t be long before AT&T delivers the official news, and hopefully T-Mobile and Sprint will do the same; we’ll keep you posted as soon as it happens.

Razer begins shipping Edge units to those who preordered this month

Back when the Razer Edge pre-orders kicked off, on March 1st, the company wasn’t quite clear as to when exactly the device would commence shipping to early adopters, only going as far as saying it would be later that very month. Well, the good news is today Razer took to its own Facebook page to announce that its new-era gaming PC is now on its way to folks who put in a pre-order “from the March batch.” Meanwhile, Razer’s hoping other gamers will also shell out the hefty amount of $999-plus for its novel piece of hardware, urging potential buyers on the social network to snag a unit (or two) before they go out of stock — just don’t expect to get a keyboard dock with your order, as the previously reported Q3 availability for this add-on remains intact. Above all, however, it’s a great thing to see that what was once just a project, is now getting ready to arrive at consumers’ doorsteps.

If our coverage of BioShock Infinite  has yet to entice you to pre-order the game in time for its March 26 release date, then maybe today’s news of pre-order bonuses will get you off your lazy rump to the nearest video game retailer to pre-order BioShock Infinite.

Irrational Games released a new trailer that is not only filled with gameplay footage, but it also has information regarding pre-order bonuses sprinkled throughout the trailer. The pre-order bonus, known as the Industrial Revolution Pack, will give players exclusive access to three in-game gear items that boost combat abilities, 500 bonus in-game currency, five lock picks and the Industrial Revolution puzzle game.

The Industrial Revolution Pack will only be available at participating retailers, which if you’re in the U.S. are GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart and Irrational Games’ online store. If you’re outside of the U.S. and are curious which retailers will supply you with a Industrial Revolution Pack when you pre-order with them, head on over to BioShock Infinite’s pre-order portal.

iPad Mini Ship Times Now At Two Weeks For All Wi-Fi Models

Apple’s iPad mini shipping times have slipped to a minimum of two weeks across the board, including for Wi-Fi only versions, which were the only ones initially set for an earlier, November 2 delivery. The white version actually sold out fastest, with pre-order ship times dropping to two weeks just 20 minutes or so after pre-orders began Friday morning at 12 AM PT/3 AM ET.

How does that compare with previous product launches? Well, the initial stock of iPhone 5s sold out in just about an hour, but pre-orders of the 3rd generation iPad with Retina Display released in March took a couple of days to sell out completely. Apple began taking pre-orders the day it unveiled the  ”new iPad” on March 7, and they were out of initial stock by March 9. In other words, the iPad mini seems to be on pace with Apple’s tablet sales standards so far, though we won’t know about how much stock was available at launch for at least a little while yet.

On Thursday’s conference call discussing Apple’s quarterly earnings, CEO Tim Cook came back again and again to the challenges of iPad mini manufacturing, and how that affected gross margins. That might also indicate that we’ll see supply constraints early on, with demand outpacing supply (nothing new for an Apple product launch, of course). But regardless of initial shipping volumes, the iPad mini selling out initial supplies over a weekend provides some early evidence that some critics’ claims of Apple pricing itself out of market with the $329 iPad mini are likely unfounded.

As for why the white mini was so quick to sell out, judging by how long it took the black and slate version to get there, it looks like Apple could have a much more limited supply of the white version. It’ll be interesting to see in what ratios the different versions hit stores, and whether perhaps there are supply or manufacturing challenges around the white model.

Nintendo’s Wii U isn’t the only gaming console launching this holiday — portable Neo Geo hardware is arriving on December 6, and it’s called the Neo Geo X. The somewhat pricey handheld is now available for pre-order, and incentivizing that pre-order is the promise of an extra game (ADK-developed fighting game Ninja Master), bringing the total of pre-loaded game software to 21 titles. This “limited edition” version still costs the same $200 that the normal version does, and it still comes with the same variety of supplementary hardware we’ve seen before (that $130 standalone remains date-less, sadly). While most eyes have been focused on Microsoft finally slapping an official price tag on its upcoming Surface tablet this morning, let’s not forget there other companies involved in the Windows 8 madness as well. Just a few moments ago, Samsung announced it’s now ready to take your money in exchange for one of the many offerings inside its hefty PC repertoire, such as the ATIV Smart PC, Series 5 Ultra Touch, Series 7 Notebook, Series 9 Premium Ultrabook and the Series 5, Series 7 all-in-ones — all of which will be available on that now-famed October 26th date. Naturally, pricing depends on what kind of setup gets added to your cart, but chances are you’ll find one that’s right for you amongst this extensive PC feast from the Korean electronics giant.

ASUS TAICHI 21 and VivoBook X202 go up for US pre-orders, spoil the party a bit early (update: VivoTab RT, too)

Just because ASUS has planned a grand October 23rd event to outline its US Windows 8 lineup doesn’t mean we can’t get an advance peek. Pre-orders have officially kicked off for at least two touchscreen PCs that also give us a very good feeling for the hardware we’ll see at our doors. The dual-screened TAICHI 21 is naturally the star of the show, but it will cost you: a base version of the 11.6-inch hybrid with a 1.7GHz Core i5, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD starts at $1,300, while an uprated model with a 1.9GHz Core i7 and a 256GB SSD will set early adopters back by $1,600. We’d say the VivoBook X202 is more likely to get some purchases sight-unseen at $600 for an entry laptop with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, a 1.8GHz Core i3, 4GB of RAM and a conventional 500GB hard drive. Both of the systems should arrive in tandem with Windows 8’s October 26th launch and compound the traffic jams for couriers and retailers on what could be a very busy day.

Update: As Computerworld noticed, Newegg also has a pre-order listing for the VivoTab RT, which costs $599 in its lone 32GB configuration. It ships the same day as its bigger cousins.

Rumor: AT&T will start taking pre-orders for Windows Phone 8 devices on October 21st

Color us not-too-shocked if it’s true, but the Verge has reported that AT&T will begin taking orders for Windows Phone 8 models from the likes of Nokia and HTC on October 21st. Microsoft has already sent invites around for a formal launch of the new smartphone OS for October 29th in San Francisco, so it would make sense for AT&T to start building its own list a week or so ahead of that. The company will also (supposedly) start taking your money for its US-exclusive Samsung Ativ Smart PC and Asus Vivo Tab RT on that day, which also jibes well with Redmond’s Windows 8 launch event on October 25th. Availability of those devices is rumored to be the day after (October 26th), while eager Windows Phone 8 users will get their hands on those models “in early November,” according to the source. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for confirmation, though it would be more surprising if all the order-taking didn’t commence around those dates.
