Microsoft Office Excel 12

The Windows SuperSite which is ran by Paul Thurrott has screenshots of Microsoft Office 12 Beta 1. It has many different galleries: Installation, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, FrontPage, and OneNote. Microsoft Office 12 is going to be a very powerful application but will have a learning curve to it. I have already given my review on this Beta version of Office and listed the bugs I found.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2 Beta 2 Released

This article was written on January 23, 2007 by CyberNet.

Thunderbird 2 Beta 2 I was surely surprised this morning to wake up to news that Thunderbird 2 Beta 2 has been released! I knew that it would be sometime this month but I figured it wouldn’t come until next week.

Here are all of the new features that they list, but it is the same as the Beta 1 list

  • Message Tags: Create your own tags for organizing email. Messages can be assigned any number of tags. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
  • Visual Theme:Thunderbird 2′s theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability.
  • Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
  • Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
  • Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
  • Improved Offline Management: Thunderbird (Linux and Windows) automatically adjusts the offline state based on current network connectivity.
  • Improved New Mail Notification Alerts:New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message text.
  • Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
  • Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance.
  • Find As You Type
  • Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items for moving and copying folders to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
  • Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
  • New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
  • MacOS X Universal Binaries

I think that a majority of the work was under-the-hood since there were 78 bug fixes since the last Beta. If you are still using Thunderbird 1.5 you might be surprised at the refreshing appearance that version 2 offers:

Thunderbird 2 Beta 2

As we mentioned a few months back, Mozilla still plans on doing tabbed messages. Of course, I’m pretty skeptical that it will be able to make it in time because the Beta builds, which are now done, are supposed to represent all of the new features. Then the release candidates only focus on fixing bugs introduced by those new features. So don’t be surprised if we don’t get tabbed messages.

As for future milestones the two release candidates should be coming in February and then the final release of Thunderbird 2 is expected sometime this first quarter (it has already been more than a year after 1.5 was released). Then it looks like they want to get things moving again because Thunderbird 3 is projected to be released the first quarter of 2008.

Go Thunderbird! 😀

Windows: Installer
Linux
: GTK2 + XFT
Mac OS X
: Universal Binary

Thanks for the tip wipeout140 and Claus Valca!

New Google Talk… Almost Google, Almost

This article was written on April 07, 2008 by CyberNet.

google talk labs Both you and I have been complaining for quite awhile that Google needs to provide an updated desktop version of the Google Talk instant messenger, and it looks like they are listening after all. Over the weekend they released a new version called Google Talk, Labs Edition that is currently in testing. Sounds great, right?

Google almost got it right. They took their existing Google Talk gadget that is powered by Flash, and wrapped it into an actual installable application. That means you get things such as group chat capabilities, tabbed conversations, nice smilies, and enjoy the integration with Flickr/YouTube. Not only that but they also included a new notifications system (pictured to the right) that will show you when you receive new Gmail emails or have an upcoming appointment on Google Calendar. It’s almost everything I wanted.

The downside? Well, it looks as though they took one step forward and two steps back. This desktop version of Google Talk doesn’t include the best aspects of the existing desktop client, which are file transfers and voice chat. Bummer! Seeing that the new version utilizes their Flash client I was also expecting it to be cross-platform (Windows, Linux, and Mac), but it’s only available for Windows.

So maybe we need to make ourselves a little clearer… Dear Google, we wanted new features added to the existing Google Talk client. Not an entirely new application.

Windows 7 Release Date in 2009?

This article was written on January 18, 2008 by CyberNet.

Windows 7 TG Daily has gotten there hands on a valuable piece of information … an early roadmap for Windows 7! Microsoft previously said that general availability of Windows 7 will be in 2010, which may still hold true. Here’s the milestone estimates that was outlined in the roadmap:

  • Milestone 1 – Already available to Microsoft Partners.
  • Milestone 2 – April/May 2008
  • Milestone 3 – Third Quarter 2008
  • BetaTo be determined
  • Release CandidateTo be determined
  • RTM – Second half of 2009

It’s likely that if Windows 7 gets sent to the manufacturer late in 2009 that a consumer release will follow in 2010. As we saw with Vista, the consumer availability was over 2 and a half months after the operating system RTM’d.

All of this will be confirmed when Microsoft announces the requirements for the Windows Logo Program for Windows 7, which they say will be available at least 18 months before the RTM date. If the 2009 RTM date holds true we should hear about the Windows 7 Logo Program by July 2008.

In terms of new features and functionality in Windows 7 there has been little information leaked. The most we know at this point is that Microsoft plans on adding touchscreen features to the operating system. They are probably doing that in hopes of boosting Tablet PC sales by introducing devices that can receive input from both a stylus and by touch.

Hopefully more information regarding Windows 7 will leak soon, because I’m anxious to see what Windows 7 might include. 😉

Firefox 3 Beta 4 is Here!

This article was written on March 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

It’s here! Firefox 3 Beta 4 has been added to Mozilla’s FTP’s, and the distribution has already begun among download sites. This release was expected by the end of February, but they must have hit a few bumps in the road. And now Firefox 3 Beta 5 is currently scheduled for late March.

If you’re wondering what’s new in this release there isn’t that much that I can show you. The release notes for Firefox 3 Beta 4 have not been updated to reflect the release, and so I winged it:

  • The Vista theme now shows up correctly for those of you running Vista on your computer, and you can see the various icons in the screenshot above.
  • The really good news lies in some of the improvements that they’ve made under-the-hood. For example, as we previously outlined Firefox 3 really takes the cake on the SunSpider JavaScript test. Those changes have been rolled into Firefox 3 Beta 4, and hopefully you’ll see some better performance because of it.
  • Hundreds of bug fixes have landed in this release.

Okay, now it’s your turn to try it out! Mozilla hasn’t updated the official Beta site yet, but the necessary files have been added to the FTP. Our downloader, as always, balances the load across all the servers that are hosting the setup file which eases the burden on Mozilla’s servers. So download until your heart is content:

Note: The build ID is 2008030714, which means this version was compiled on March 7th. This is not the same version that was posted last week by some download sites, such as BetaNews.

CyberWare: GreatNews Newspaper-Style RSS Reader

This article was written on August 03, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNet's CyberWare
Tracking Down Great Software For You!

I have hundreds of feeds that I follow everyday and I don’t like the slow update frequency of many online feed readers, such as Bloglines. On my journey for finding the best feed reader I came across software like FeedDemon and Flock but neither felt like it was what I wanted. I eventually came across GreatNews which is currently being offered for free because it is in Beta testing.

Great News Feed Reader

I love the newspaper style reading with the two-columns and it does just that! You can also customize the look using custom CSS templates or you can use one of the built-in templates. I like the default style the best but they also have a style to make it look like the Sage RSS Reader for Firefox. One of the default templates is sure to please you.

Great News Feed Reader

It isn’t just about the looks…we need functionality! Boy does GreatNews have that! I’m able to setup a keyword watch for articles that contain “Google” in them and it will highlight them in yellow for me. If you are a Bloglines user then you can setup GreatNews to synchronize with your account so that you have a great news reader at home but you can still read your news wherever you are. Let’s not forget about the built-in tabbed browser which makes it easy to open the links without switching between the feed reader and a browser! If you have questions about the software then check out the very active forums where you can find most of your answers. They haven’t determined how they will charge for the software when it gets released, but they are pondering the thought of having a free version and a professional version. The professional version would support things like podcasts but will cost around $30. However, there is no need to think about dollar signs now because you can test it out for free!

Download Portable Flock 0.7.1 Here

It was about one-week ago when I posted an article regarding the PhotoBucket Flock and Max had a very good question. He wondered if there was any way that I could make a Portable Flock and that got me thinking. Flock is based off of Firefox so I saw no reason why I shouldn’t be able to get Flock to work with it.

I want to start by saying that this whole thing wouldn’t be possible without the great work that John Haller has done on Portable Firefox. I watch his news quite closely and his newest version of Portable Firefox, when it gets released, will have the ability to update itself. Right now Portable Firefox cannot download the partial updates but that will soon be a thing of the past. So I just wanted to say thanks to John for making this Portable Flock possible!

It took a little editing and very small code modifications (because John designed Portable Firefox so well that it was easy to modify) but I got it to work. Now I don’t use Flock on a daily basis so I am not sure about the stability but it should satisfy the needs of most people out there. I will admit that when Flock first came out I never gave it much of a chance, but after creating this Portable version and using it for a few hours I have to say it is extremely sweet! In one of my posts Ryan Williams and I were having a discussion about integrated feed readers and how great Firefox would be if it had one. Well, he was definitely right when he said “Flock is a great example of how RSS can work beautifully in a browser”. So that more people can see just how nice the RSS reader is I put this Portable version together. You can now try it out and see if it is really right for your purposes without even needing to install it. Heck, you can even throw this on your USB drive and carry it with you which would be like having Flock-On-The-Go 😀 .

These are the instructions that you need to use the Portable Flock. All you have to do is download the Portable Flock file below. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file PortableFlock.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Flock! The profile is kept with the PortableFlock folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!

I know that John Haller has run into trademark issues in the past with Mozilla, and if Flock contacts me to remove this file I will gladly do so. I can only imagine that it would help them out because they will receive their revenue from the search bar and this might increase the number of users. Also, I normally ZIP up the files but when I zipped up the file it was still over 10MB! To bring the size down I compressed it using RAR which brought it down to 8.32MB, man what a difference.

Okay, you can download it now:

Download Eset Smart Security 3 Public Beta (Screenshots)

This article was written on April 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

Eset is very well known for its NOD32 antivirus protection which is considered to be the most advanced and secure protection for your PC. Eset Smart Security (ESS) is going to be the next big release by Eset and it will not only cover antivirus protection, but it will also include a built-in firewall for the first time. The final form of the security suite is not expected until later this year, but Eset is now seeking testers through a public Beta program.

Eset Smart Security

To get involved yourself you either need to visit the Eset Smart Security 3 Public Beta 1 Homepage or use this link to download the Beta (Download Mirror). I recommend registering for the Beta program because maybe they’ll give you a free year of virus protection or something when the final version is released. 😉

ESS Public Beta 1 requires Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP (x86), Windows Server 2003 (x86), or Windows Vista (x86). Once installed this is what you’ll have full access to:

  • The next version of ESET’s anti-malware engine (NOD32 v3.0)
  • A personal firewall with port stealthing and advanced filtering features
  • Antispam filtering with Bayesian filter, whitelisting and blacklisting.

Now you do have to remember that this is a Beta application, and that some things may not go as expected. Here is the heads up that Eset provided over in the forum.

ESS is the first, brand-new version of security software to be released by ESET in several years. NOD32 v2.70, v2.51 and earlier releases were version upgrades, all based on the 2.x codebase which dates back to 2003.

ESS is not production code, but beta code. Unlike previous beta test cycles which tested updates to a mature codebase, ESS represents a brand-new codebase and some of the experiences you have with it will mirror those which occurred with NOD32 v1.0 and v2.0 beta-test cycles.

The Public Beta 1 drop of ESS is going to contain some rough edges, such as unfinished screens, missing online help sections and so forth. It is also going to contain bugs (errors in the program, not viruses).

I will be installing this sometime this weekend to test out the stability and features, but in the meantime here are a bunch of screenshots that Brian posted in the Wilders Security Forum (click on any to enlarge them):

Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security Eset Smart Security

The new interface is definitely refreshing compared to the stripped down appearance that the old version had. I’m sure such a drastic change will upset some people, but this is something that was definitely necessary to keep up with the other more modern looking software. I think this will be a really great piece of software once it reaches its final form…now if only they would follow the lead of other security suite distributors who are now letting users install the software on 3 PC’s for each license they purchase. 😉

Firefox 3 Alpha 6 Released…Now Come the Beta’s

This article was written on July 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Firefox 3 Alpha 6 with Add-ons Restarter

The last of the Firefox 3 Alpha’s was just pushed out the door today, which brought some new features along with it. Here’s a quick list of what’s new along with some screenshots:

  • A new Quit dialog box
    Firefox 3 Quit Dialog
  • Improved cookie performance
  • Added a permanent ‘Restart Firefox’ button to the Add-Ons Manager (as seen in the first screenshot) .
  • Miscellaneous fixes to download manager including correctly displaying large file sizes.
  • Various Places fixes.
  • Support for site-specific preferences – Firefox will now remember "text zoom" settings for a specific site. There are some other things that you can configure on a site-by-site basis as well, which can be found when right-clicking on a page and choosing the "View Page Info" option:
    Firefox 3 Page Info

I was hoping to see some more changes to the Places bookmark management, but in terms of the UI not much has changed. It still isn’t at the point of the original Places we saw back in early Firefox 2 builds. Back then it provided a central location to manage your history, bookmarks, and subscriptions. As it stands right now the major additions to Places should be complete by Beta 1.

I also started going through the Product Requirements Document to see what things were still on track, and which weren’t going to make the cut for Firefox 3. There are quite a few low-priority features labeled as being "at risk" for not getting completed. The thing that gets me is that they are still planning to ship Beta 1 on July 31, at which time Firefox 3 should be feature complete, and there are still some big things that haven’t peeked out yet. For instance, a revamped download manager and a new Firefox theme are both higher priority items that haven’t been discussed too much.

I’m strongly hoping that they will be able to stay on track, but they still have a ways to go. I do wish that so many of the tab-related features weren’t labeled "at risk" right now, because some of them would be nice to have.

Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Download

This article was written on May 02, 2006 by CyberNet.

Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Download

Microsoft has begun testing the next release of Windows Desktop Search. Unfortunately this version does not include an end-user UI, but the next release is expected to have it. This release is for the Engine Preview ONLY. It allows applications like Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to be indexed so that the content within those applications can be quickly searched.

Here is what Microsoft has to say about this release:

Windows Desktop Search 3.0 enables fast search on your PC using indexing technology. It helps you to find your documents, email, music, photos and other items. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.0 is a Windows service that can be used by applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Office OneNote 2007 to index application content and deliver instant results when searching within an application. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. This release is an Engine Preview of WDS 3.0 Beta. It contains the WDS 3.0 engine only and is meant to support searching from desktop applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook and OneNote 2007. Since this release does not provide a full desktop search experience, users of earlier versions of Windows Desktop Search should not upgrade to this release unless directed to by Outlook 2007, OneNote 2007 or another application. The next beta release of WDS 3.0 will include end-user UI to allow searching over all indexed content from a single place.
