Tokyo U reveals that Main Sugar Constituent Provides Effective Anode Material for Sodium Ion Batteries

A research group at the Tokyo University of Science, led by Associate Professor Shinichi Komaba, has confirmed that hard carbon obtained by pyrolyzing sucrose, the main constituent of sugar, is an effective anode material for sodium ion batteries.
Currently, most rechargeable batteries are lithium ion batteries. However, Japan relies on imports for its entire supply of lithium, a rare metal. Consequently lithium ion batteries are expensive. Sodium ion batteries are intended to overcome …

We’re liveblogging HTC’s big reveal tomorrow at 11am ET! (update: teaser)

We're liveblogging HTC's big reveal tomorrow at 11am ET! update teaser

HTC isn’t betraying too much with its event invite, but we’ve got our suspicions about what the Taiwanese company has up its sleeve. Maybe there will even be a few surprises in store for us, who knows? That’s why we had to accept HTC’s invite and will be there live, in person to experience the reveal ourselves. Since you can’t be there (and we wouldn’t want you to be square), join us tomorrow morning at 11am ET and follow along in the liveblog right here — we’ll know you’re with us in spirit.

Update: How about that: the company just whittled down the possibilities through an official teaser on its Facebook page. All we see is the corner of a Windows Phone, the event date and a promise that it’s a day “when beautiful hardware meets stunning software.” It doesn’t take much sleuthing to deduce that this is HTC’s turn at a Windows Phone 8 device launch, and that we may well see devices like the 8X when the New York City gathering gets started.

Live from Motorola’s ‘main event’ in NYC!

Live from Motorola's 'main event' in NYC!

It’s a busy day to say the least. We hope you’ve had a chance to catch your breath after Nokia and Microsoft’s little powwow, cause now it’s time for what Motorola has rather presumptuously dubbed “the day’s main event.” The big news is undoubtedly a brand new LTE device, as betrayed by the Verizon logo emblazoned on our invite. Could it be the oft-leaked RAZR HD? You’ll just have to check back at the appropriate time to find out.

Tokyo Institute of Technology developed a Cooking simulator that will help you cook a perfect meal every time

This cooking simulator, being developed by a research group at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, features a force feedback fry pan and spatula to accurately recreate the sense of cooking.
This simulator calculates the heat transfer from the pan to the meat or vegetables that are being cooked, and displays the visible changes caused by heating. The fry pan interface allows for three dimensional input, and as well as moving the fry pan to aid the cooking process, the simulator can feed back the …

Swumanoid swimming android robot from Tokyo Tech will help athletes swim faster

Swumanoid, developed by the Nakashima Group at Tokyo Institute of Technology, is a humanoid robot that replicates the motion of a swimmer. In the future, this robot is expected to help researchers analyze how people can swim faster, and develop speed enhancing swimming apparel.
“In research on swimming, one problem is, it’s hard to know how much propulsive force the hands create during a stroke. There have been attempts to measure such things using actual swimmers, but it’s …
