We’re liveblogging HTC’s big reveal tomorrow at 11am ET! (update: teaser)

We're liveblogging HTC's big reveal tomorrow at 11am ET! update teaser

HTC isn’t betraying too much with its event invite, but we’ve got our suspicions about what the Taiwanese company has up its sleeve. Maybe there will even be a few surprises in store for us, who knows? That’s why we had to accept HTC’s invite and will be there live, in person to experience the reveal ourselves. Since you can’t be there (and we wouldn’t want you to be square), join us tomorrow morning at 11am ET and follow along in the liveblog right here — we’ll know you’re with us in spirit.

Update: How about that: the company just whittled down the possibilities through an official teaser on its Facebook page. All we see is the corner of a Windows Phone, the event date and a promise that it’s a day “when beautiful hardware meets stunning software.” It doesn’t take much sleuthing to deduce that this is HTC’s turn at a Windows Phone 8 device launch, and that we may well see devices like the 8X when the New York City gathering gets started.

iPhone 5 full details official as device hits Apple Store online

It’s time to take a peek at the entirety of the iPhone 5‘s specifications, top to bottom, as the device hits the Apple Store online and we get our first full taste of Apple‘s new smartphone hero (be sure to have a look at our wrap-up of Apple’s big event). This device is the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet with a 4-inch Retina quality display up front and a new A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 works with 4G LTE on a variety of networks both here in the USA and abroad and works with what Apple calls Ultrafast wireless or “LTE. The right way.” The iPhone 5 has a new set of earbuds called EarPods, a new dock connector called Lightning, and a boosted 8-megapixel “iSight” camera as well.

This device has an on/off sleep/wake button on top, a 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack at the bottom near two speaker grills and a Lightning connector. It’s got three microphones for HD recording, and two buttons on the left, one for turning the volume up and one for turning it down. Of course, the iPhone 5 also comes running iOS 6, which boasts a number of improvement and new features, including Apple’s new Maps app, Facebook and Passbook integration, and new Siri functionality (which includes support for additional languages). NOTE: Check out our full hands-on with the iPhone 5 soon in our Apple portal!

That A6 chip lends to “twice the CPU and graphics performance,” and that 8-megapixel iSight camera on the back comes with a sapphire crystal lens that not only provides “a crystal clear” image, but is also more durable than standard glass. The iPhone 5 takes advantage of Apple-developed single-radio LTE, and also has dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support at its disposal. Even though the iPhone 5 comes with a brand new Lightning connector, users will be able to connect to legacy 30-pin devices through the use of a special adapter, so Apple has you covered there. On the front we also have a “FaceTime HD” 1.2-megapixel camera, capable of shooting in 720p.

So there you have it, the iPhone 5 is actually a thing and it’s already taken up residence on the Apple’s homepage. It’ll go up for pre-order later this week on September 14, and then Apple is set to begin its worldwide roll out of the new phone on September 21. Like iPhones in the past, this one comes in three different flavors: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399 (with a two-year agreement of course). Tell us – are you picking up the iPhone 5 next week?

iPod touch refresh gains Siri and color collection

The iPhone 5 may have been the groundbreaking announcement at today’s Apple event, but the iPod Touch is also getting a refresh, and it comes with a number of improvements over the iPod Touch that we’re familiar with. For example, Apple is making some big changes to the camera, with Apple including a new iSight camera on the back of this bad boy. This new camera comes complete with autofocus, LED flash, a 5 megapixel sensor, backside illumination, and a five-element lens.

To top things off, the iPod Touch comes with the same sapphire lens cover that the iPhone 5 is equipped with. The camera on the back support 1080p with image stabilization, while the FaceTime camera on the front can shoot in 720p and makes use of Apple’s facial recognition. The new iPod Touch will come in a variety of different colors – aluminum, black, red, blue, and yellow – and each one will come with a color-coordinated wrist straps that you can attach to the back of your device to keep it secure while using it as a camera.

Finally, in one of the most important announcements during Apple’s presentation, Siri is coming to the iPod Touch. The addition of Siri is bound to move some units this holiday season, so we’re going to go ahead and say that putting Siri on the iPod Touch is a winning idea for Apple. Have a look at our liveblog of Apple’s event for as-it-happens coverage, and also be sure to stop by our Apple portal to find more in-depth posts on Apple’s big announcements.

iPhone 5 launching in 100 countries on 240 different carriers

We’ve heard plenty about the iPhone 5 today, but now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty and talk release information. Apple said during its event today that iPhone 5 pre-orders will open up on September 14 – two days from now – and it will be launching in some countries on September 21. Those initial regions include the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

On September 28, a week after those locations listed above, the iPhone 5 will launch in 22 other countries, including places like Austria, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Denmark, Spain, and the Netherlands. Sometime in October, the iPhone 5 will release in 20 more countries, with Apple saying this is its “fastest phone roll out ever.”

By the end of the year, the iPhone 5 will be available in 100 different countries on 240 different carriers. Apple’s goals for the iPhone 5 roll out are definitely lofty, and it better hope that it goes into this worldwide launch with enough devices to satisfy demand – after what we’ve seen today, it’s basically a sure thing that the iPhone 5 will be selling like crazy once it launches. Be sure to check out our liveblog of Apple’s event for up to the minute news, and keep watching our Apple portal for more in-depth coverage. There’s more to come, so stay tuned!

iPhone 5 comes equipped with three microphones

Apple has included a lot of cool features with the iPhone 5, but one of the more interesting talking points is that the iPhone 5 comes complete with three microphones. One of these mics is located on the front of the device, another on the side, and the final one has taken up residence on the back. So, why does the iPhone 5 need three microphones?

Apple has equipped the iPhone 5 with three mics to aid in noise cancellation. This will come in handy for both voice calls and video, and they will also help in a big way with voice recognition. To complement the multiple mic setup, Apple has made a few improvements to the speakers and earpieces, bringing the size of both down by a significant 20%. As an added bonus, Apple has also announced that Wideband audio will now work with more frequencies.

So, with the iPhone 5, we can expect audio quality to be a bit better than we’re used to with other smartphones. This is on top of other improvements already announced by Apple, including the iPhone 5′s lightweight and thin design, a 4-inch screen, and the addition of Retina Display. Be sure to have a look at our liveblog of Apple’s event for details as they’re revealed, and also stop by our Apple portal, where we’re posting all the news you need to know from today’s event!

iPhone 5 revealed as ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’

The iPhone 5 has officially arrived folks, and Apple is making some pretty big promises about it. The first is that it’s the “world’s thinnest smartphone.” In his announcement, Phil Schiller revealed that the iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thick, which is an 18% decrease in thickness over the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 is pretty light too, weighing in at only 112 grams – that’s 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is the same width as the iPhone 4S is, but it’s a good amount taller. That change was made to accommodate the new screen, which measures in at 4-inches. That’s a pretty significant upgrade, considering that iPhone screens of the past have come in at 3.5-inches.

Of course, the iPhone 5 also features Retina Display, which will undoubtedly be a big selling point for the brand new device. All in all, Apple promises a new iPhone that feels great in your hand, and with those specifications, we don’t doubt that it will. Be sure to hit up our liveblog of Apple’s event for second-by-second updates, and check out our Apple portal for more in-depth coverage of the event!

Apple prepping Yerba Buena Center for iPhone 5 reveal

The fact that Apple is holding a media event on September 12 has been all over the place lately, and as we close in on the date, anticipation is beginning to build. Here’s something that won’t help at all with that anticipation: Apple has started prepping the Yerba Buena Center ahead of the event, with 9to5Mac and Macstories both posting pictures of the exterior and interior of the building. Apple clearly wants to make its presence known on September 12, but given the Apple events of years past, we really wouldn’t expect any less.

Preparations still seem to be ongoing, but the images show that they’re certainly underway and progressing nicely. We can see workers decorating the outside of the building with colorful banners, as Apple is wont to do for its press events and major reveals. On the inside, we can plainly see a wall that has been plastered with a huge Apple logo. There isn’t any doubt about it – Apple has something huge planned, and thanks to a number of leaks (and Apple’s own invitations) we have a pretty good idea of what that is.

Apple is widely expected to announce the iPhone 5 next week, and indeed, all signs point to such a reveal. There were also some rumors that claimed Apple would reveal a brand new iteration of the iPad – the iPad Mini – but lately those rumors have died down in favor of new whispers which claim that the iPad Mini will be revealed at a later date. Earlier today, we caught word of an incoming iPod reveal at the event, but aside from the iPhone 5, it’s still difficult to say what Apple has planned.

In any case, it’s going to be pretty big. We’re going to be there liveblogging the whole thing, so be sure to follow this link and watch everything unfold starting at 10 AM PST on September 12. Additionally, to tide yourself over until the big event actually arrives, be sure to check out our Apple portal for all of the latest rumors, speculation, and news. Stay tuned folks, because the next few days are likely to be quite the wild ride.

Kindle Fire HD 7-inch priced at $199, 8.9-inch at $299

Just as the rumors foretold, the Kindle Fire HD has arrived, and it has a bevy of features in tow. Amazon obviously wants to position itself as a major player in the technology market, which is all well and good, but before we can give Amazon a pat on the back, we need to get down to the nitty gritty and talk pricing. How much will the Kindle Fire HD be with all of its new bells and whistles? The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, complete with 16GB of storage, comes it at $199.

We suspected as much, mostly because it’s clear that Amazon wants this new tablet to offer some stiff competition to the Nexus 7. If you want the larger, 8.9-inch variant of the Kindle Fire HD (again with 16GB of storage), that’ll cost you $299. Those prices aren’t too bad for either tablet, and we’re sure that Amazon will have no problem netting significant sales from Kindle Fire veterans and newcomers alike. Additionally, the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE 8.9-inch with 32GB of storage will be available for $499. Amazon’s also got a solid 4G plan ready to go as well – 250MB of data a month, 200GB of cloud storage, and $10 Amazon credit for $50 a year.

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will be available on September 14 – just over a week away. If you’re interested in either of the 8.9-inch versions, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer, as those aren’t launching until November 20. This means that all three will be arriving in time for the holiday shopping season, so expect them to be big hits at the tail end of 2012, especially the 7-inch version. All three are available for pre-order today, so have at it folks.
