So Microsoft launched a new email service today — not a redesigned version of Hotmail, but a completely new, built-from-the-ground-up service. It’s called Outlook.com, and for now, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail, as Microsoft attempts to distance itself from Hotmail’s bad rap. As it happens, the email features are basically the same across the two services, but from a visual standpoint, Outlook.com is everything Hotmail is not: where Hotmail has distracting banners and video ads, Outlook’s are discreet. Indeed, you won’t find any targeted ads on conversations with individual people (newsletters and such are still fair game). In lieu of those creepy personalized ads, you’ll see quick access to Twitter and Facebook, where you can retweet and like things, as well as post comments. Skype integration is coming too (finally!), though that feature isn’t live today. Most importantly, though, it brings a fresh, minimal interface designed to lure away Gmail users who wouldn’t have otherwise given Hotmail the time of day.

Outlook.com is open to the public starting today. You can create a new account or sign in using an existing Hotmail address. Though it’s still in its preview phase, anyone can sign up (read: no invites necessary). Storage is “virtually” unlimited — Microsoft doesn’t want to promise potential spammers a limitless account — and anyone creating a Microsoft account for the first time gets the usual 7GB of complimentary SkyDrive storage. Digital music store 7digital has announced that it’s launching a Windows 8-based version — and you can even shop around on the preview iteration, ahead of the operating system’s October launch date. The store will offer up 20 million tracks, with your account still working across the existing platforms, including the recent Windows Phone version. This preview app, which runs on both the desktop and metro versions, also includes 7digital’s music discovery service and 30-second previews of all its content. If you’ve already invested into 7digital’s music library, then you can start syncing your collection to your experimental Windows 8 devices starting today. The music-seller also promises “further refinements” ahead of Microsoft’s big launch.

Zoom is known for making audio recorders, but its latest product, the Q2HD, brings video to the recording party — HD video, no less. Sure, there are many ways to shoot and share our lives these days, and it’s a wonder that services like Ustream aren’t just full of videos of people unboxing cameras, checking in and uploading pictures to Pinterest (while also watching Ustream). Zoom, however, evidently believes that though the method might evolve, the medium largely remains the same — voice and video. As such, the Q2HD Handy Video Recorder (to give it its full name) promises to play, capture and stream, all in “HD audio and video.” Paraphrasing of the box aside, we got our hands on one and took it for a spin.
