Lexmark announces detailed restructuring plan: 1,700 layoffs, inkjet business to be nixed

Lexmark announces detailed restructuring plan 1,700 layoffs, inkjet business to be sold

It’s always a sad day when news come in of hard-working folks losing their cherished jobs — and, unfortunately, today’s one of those dismal days. In a detailed press release, Lexmark’s let it be known it’ll be be undergoing a company-wide restructure, but with the main focus being the exiting of the outfit’s inkjet hardware development and manufacturing — which, in the end, should save the printer maker about $95 million per year once the plan has taken place. Naturally, this doesn’t come without any repercussions, as Lexmark’s announced these restructuring actions will see around 1,700 worldwide jobs be lost; 1,100 of which are manufacturing positions, and also include the closing of an inkjet supplies manufacturing plant in the Philippines. Needless to say, we can only hope Lexmark sees better days. For now, however, you can peruse over the company’s official word in the presser located right past the break.

Brother MFC-J4510DW Business Smart Series color inkjet all-in-one printer

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother, or so the desktop computer says when communicating with the Brother-branded printer. Most of us would have laser printers at the office and perhaps even at home, but for those of us who cannot really afford a laser printer as well as the toner cartridges, a more affordable solution would be an inkjet, albeit at the expense of print quality. The Brother MFC-J4510DW Business Smart Series color inkjet all-in-one printer might be just the ticket for those looking for a balance, where it comes with a Landscape Printing Technology which will reorient the way color inkjet printing is done, reducing the machine footprint in the process while increasing print speeds.

Brother’s engineers also redesigned the ink cartridges so that they occupy less space while delivering extremely high page yields. The flagship model MFC-J4510DW, targets small office/home office and businesses without breaking the bank, thanks to a $199 price point, where it will hit the market from the beginning of October onwards. It can print up to 35 pages per minute in black & white, while color pages are spat out at 27 pages per minute, both in Fast Mode, respectively. ‘

Brother Business Smart Series color inkjet all-in-one printer series revealed

This week the folks at Brother have revealed the Business Smart Series color inkjet all-in-one printer series with Landscape Printing Technology to change the way all-in-one printing is done. This printer lineup is made to take what it is to be an all-in-one unit and makes it a powerhouse with a much smaller footprint than ever before. This collection of all-in-one printers also includes a new engine and a larger print head to increase the speed at which prints are made.

The innovations continue with a smaller set of ink cartridges that are able to handle super high page yields at the same time as taking up less space in the machine than with previous units. This unit totes no less than four of the most fabulous next-generation features Brother has to offer:

• Fastest in class print speeds
• Smallest in class footprint
• Low cost printing
• Easy-to-use TouchScreen/TouchPanel display

This line is able to create automatic two-sided (duplex) prints and can print onto 11 x 17-inch paper as well. The Business Smart Series is anchored by the flagship model MFC-J4510DW, which comes in at an estimated street price of $199. This unit specifically will be popping up in office superstores and Best Buy stores across the USA in October of this year.

The MFC-J4510DW Brother Business Smart Series color inkjet all-in-one printer will come with a 3.7-inch Swipe TouchScreen Display plus TouchPanel. It’s also able to connect to the web and print via Google Cloud Print, Brother iPrint&Scan, Wi-Fi Direct, and Cortado Workplace. You’ll be able to hold up to 150 sheets of paper in this device’s paper tray and you’ll have up to 20-page automatic document feeding as well for faxing, copying, or scanning.

BONUS: Brother is the same company that works with Project Runway, the fashion-forward TV series whose recent season winner Anya Ayoung Chee we got the opportunity to speak with this year at CES 2012. Have a peek!

Instacube: The Dedicated Instagram Photo Frame

Have you ever wanted a dedicated device to navigate your Instagram feeds? Well, Instagram addicts rejoice, because D2M is working on something they call Instacube, which will allow you to do exactly that and more!

instacube instagram photo frame

Instacube is basically a digital photo frame specifically made to display and interact with Instagram photo feeds in real time. The 6.5-inch touchscreen has a special 600 × 600 resolution display, allowing you to view the photos as high as Instagram permits. That’s a bit odd, in my opinion, for what happens when Instagram updates to a larger resolution?

You can tap between pictures, and type when needed using the on-screen keyboard. There are dedicated tactile buttons on top which power the device on and off, switch feeds, and a heart-shaped button for liking photos. It’s powered by Android and comes with 4GB of storage as well as 256MB of RAM. It keeps connected to Instagram via Wi-Fi. The rechargeable battery allows you to move about with it.

Instacube is currently raising funds for production over on Kickstarter, and you can get your hands on one of the first 1,000 Instacubes for $99(USD), a $50 discount off the regular retail price.

Print Tidbits of Your Life Anytime, Anywhere with the mPrinter

Most people are already going the paperless route. It began with more personal stuff, like sending notes and messages digitally instead of through paper. It eventually expanded to the corporate world, where communications and memos are sent via email instead of through actual paper memos.

mPrinterBut bringing that printing mentality back to life, albeit in a small way, is the mPrinter. It’s a project by Andy Muldowney that’s currently up for funding on Kickstarter.

mPrinter1

Similar to the (much more expensive) Berg Little Printer, It’s basically a small analog printer that’ll print anything you command it to, from text and doodles to Sudoku grids and weather reports. USB-only mPrinters hook up to your computer via USB cable, while Wi-Fi-capable mPrinters contain built-in web servers that can connect to your network.

The mPrinter will also come with an iOS and Android app that will let you use the quick print option, manage your mPrints, and take advantage of the fun ‘doodle’ feature.

A minimum pledge of $80 will get you one USB-only mPrinter, while the Wi-Fi one requires a minimum pledge of $125. Back the project and find out more about it on the mPrinter Kickstarter page.

Berg Little Printer Now Available for Pre-Order

It’s very rare that I print anything out from my digital communications today. I haven’t printed an e-mail in months and the last time I did print was because my insurance company e-mailed me new cards. One of the great things about all the digital communications we have today is we can save paper and be greener. If you’re not the green sort and you prefer to have printed versions of some your digital communications the Berg Little Printer is now available for pre-order.

The small square thermal printer will be on the market within 60 days and you can pre-order it right now for $259 (USD). We talked about this device last November when it first debuted, but the launch day and pricing details were unknown at the time. The software the device runs has been tweaked to allow users to print content and feeds from Google and Foursquare and a variety of other places.

I wonder if the thermal printer paper it uses has to be special ordered or if you can just pick it up at your typical office supply store like adding machine tape. It’s a cute concept, but I think the price is quite expensive for what amounts to a networked thermal printer.

Berg’s odd Little Printer hits preorder

Last November I talked a bit about an odd little printer called the Little Printer. The idea behind the Little Printer was that you could enter subscriptions for your social networking sites such as Twitter that you enjoy reading in the mornings, and the printer would print them on real paper for you to read. It’s an oddly not green gadget.

At the time, we didn’t know some of the key details on the Little Printer. The launch date was a very vague “2012″ and pricing wasn’t mentioned. If you found yourself intrigued by the Little Printer, new details are now available. The device is up for preorder right now and will be available in about 60 days.

The retail price is pegged at $259 plus shipping. Since we initially heard about the printer, the BergCloud software that runs the device has been updated to allow you to pull updates to print from additional places. It now supports sites such as foursquare and Google. That means you can print out task lists, location updates, and other messages from friends.

I still think this is a very strange little device. I wonder if it uses standard thermal paper that you can purchase office stores, or if you have to order special paper. If you don’t remember this device from last year, check out the video for a few more details.

Berg's Little Printer up for preorder at $259, ready to churn out smiley news and gossip in '60 days'

Just when RSS needs a lift amid all the growing competition, here comes a gadget we’ve been waiting for since last November. The Little Printer from Berg is like a tiny personal printing press: put it somewhere in your home, hook it up wirelessly to your router and then sit back while it prints out a “miniature newspaper” from your personal feeds. More than that, the creators have been building upon their BergCloud software to allow the device to pull updates from places like Foursquare and Google, so it can also produce task lists, location updates, and direct messages from friends. The pre-order page lists a price of $259 plus shipping and promises that the Little Printer will start shipping in 60 days — big news (and a big price) indeed.

100,000 dpi full color images possible thanks to nanotechnology

What you see above is the first in a series of full color images in 100,000 dpi glory, and just before you scratch your head wondering where can you purchase a printer that is capable of doing so, you ought to know that this is made possible only with the help of nanotechnology. The 100,000 dpi full color images was made possible thanks to researchers over at A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) which is located in the tiny red dot known as Singapore. The presence of nanotechnology has resulted in such high-resolution color images which are several times sharper compared to typical methods which rely on a metal-laced nanometer framework. (more…)
