Star Wars Luke/Vader Switchplates: Which Side Are You on?

Now here’s an easy way to get people in your house to turn the lights off when they’re leaving the room or have no use for them: Star Wars Luke vs. Vader switchplates. To be honest, they’re quite simple, so you can make them yourself if you have the time and the materials.

But if you don’t, then you can always pick one up at Etsy shop KeepCalmandTurnItOn. The switchplates are inspired by the epic protagonist and antagonist match-off in the hit Star Wars franchise: Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. When you need to turn on the light, flip the switch up to the Light Side. When you’re ready to leave the room, hit the switch down and head on to the Dark Side.

These Star Wars switchplates sell for just $6.50(USD) each.

Prong PocketPlug is an iPhone Case and Charger in One

The Prong PocketPlug case makes charging your iPhone a little more convenient by doing away with the wires. It’s bulkier than your typical phone case, but that’s because it’s got a phone charger built into it.

Prong Charger

Just slip your phone into the case and flip out the swiveling prongs on the back of the case. Plug it into an outlet, and voila! Your phone’s charging. It comes especially handy when you’re traveling, because you won’t have to pack any additional cables, wires, or chargers anymore.

You won’t be able to use the phone while it’s charging, since it’ll be positioned against the wall. So in case you want to use it while it’s juicing up, just bring a cable because the Prong PocketPlug has a micro USB port on the side for corded charging.

The PocketPlug is available for the iPhone 4/4S and the iPhone 5 for $59.95 and $69.95 (USD), respectively.

Uji Shower Head Compels You to Take Shorter Showers

Nothing is more comforting or relaxing than taking a long, hot shower at the end of a very long and tiring day. But are you showering just a wee bit too long for the good of the world’s remaining water supply? Apparently, the recommended time for a shower is seven minutes.

Every second over that would mean that you’re just wasting water. At least that’s the assumption the team behind the Uji Shower are working with.

uji shower green red

The Uji is a shower head with built-in LED lights and a timer. It starts out with a green glow, which slowly changes to red when your seven minutes under the shower are up.

Brett Andler, one of Uji’s co-creators, explained: “It encourages [people] to take shorter and more energy efficient showers. By letting people become aware of how long they’re in the shower, we’ve actually been able to cut shower time by 12 percent.”

Good point. I’m definitely willing to find alternatives for stress relief in order to make sure future generations still have ample water supply. Are you?

A $10 Hack Fixes One of Apple’s Most Annoying Product Design Missteps

A $10 Hack Fixes One of Apple’s Most Annoying Product Design Missteps

Apple’s stock headphones aren’t exactly the most-loved product in the company’s oeuvre, even after Jony Ive’s team revamped them last year. Yet they’re free (with purchase) and produced by the millions. So Sprng, an inexpensive little plastic do-dad that makes them useful, is worth paying attention to.

Bottled Sand: Because Everything is Available in To-Go Containers Nowadays

Everything’s bottled or canned these days. Even unusual stuff like air, unicorn meat, inflatable beach balls, and sand. Yep, you read that right: sand.

It seems pretty crazy at first, but it makes sense, if you think about it. I mean, the beach is usually so far away and it’s always no fun, with the huge crowds and all. So if you can’t go to the beach, then why not take a part of it with you?

Brookstone has come to the rescue with their version of sand. It looks and even feels like the real thing, but it behaves like Silly Putty. Just push, mold, and pat to form it into your desired shape. Making sandcastles and sand sculptures has never been easier. The best part? You can do so in the comfort of your own home or even in your office!

Hibermate: See No People, Hear No People

Sleeping eye masks can only do so much. Because while they black out the real world from sight, they don’t block out the sounds that might cause you to toss and turn in bed.

If you really want to drown out the world, then you need to block out the sounds and the sights. Luckily, the Hibermate can help you out with both.

Hibermate

It’s an odd-looking contraption but it’s extremely effective, so much so that you wouldn’t mind looking like some alien because of the peace it brings.

The Hibermate eye mask features removable ear muffs, so you can use it just like any other traditional sleeping mask, if you prefer. The ear muffs in themselves are designed for comfort, as its made from soft, medical-grade silicon and lined with memory foam.

The Hibermate is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $40(USD) will get you one of your very own.

Put Your Kids to Work as Junior Massage Therapists with These Playmat T-Shirts

Playtime doesn’t have to be so tiring for parents. I mean, you already spend most of your time at home picking up after the kids, feeding them, doing their laundry, and helping them with schoolwork. So it’s only fair that playtime is easy on you, the parent, while still being fun and hopefully education for your child.

I’m not so sure on the educational part, but the Street and Railroad Playmat Shirt will definitely let you take a breather for the entire duration of it.

The shirts are basic tees with colorful railroads printed on the back. So all you have to do is lie down, face-flat, on the ground or on your bed, and let the shirt do all the playing. Just hand your kids some toy cars, LEGO bricks, and toy soldiers, and let them have some fun on your back – and give you a back massage – while you read a book or take a quick snooze.

Abeego is a Reusable Food Storage Fabric

You’re already gone green in most aspects of your life. But one thing most people have difficulty greening up is food storage, because what can you use to replace plastic cling wrap? It took a while to find an answer to that question, but now that we have, it’s time to spread the word about Abeego.

abeego food storage wrap

Abeego is a hemp and cotton fabric that’s supposed to help make food and leftover storage easy as pie. It’s infused with beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil so food is kept fresh when it’s wrapped in the Abeego. The fabric is malleable and slightly adhesive when it’s at room temperature, although it stiffens considerably and holds its form when it’s cooled down.

When you’re done using the Abeego, don’t throw it out. Just handwash it in cold water and it’ll be ready for you to use again once it’s dry. It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, which you can check out here.

The Following T-Shirt Has Been Approved as Appropriate Attire

If you watch movies and trailers fairly frequently, then no doubt this shirt will look familiar to you. Its design is based on the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) film rating review system that informs viewers if what they’re watching is safe for all audiences or not.

It doesn’t copy the entire notice, of course.

The Follow TShirt1

Rather, the designer behind it, New Zealand-based artist Barn Bocock of How to Carve Roast Unicorn, made a few choice changes to the text. The layout remains almost entirely the same, though.

Barn calls the design ‘The Following T-Shirt’, which is pretty apt for what it is.

The Follow TShirt

The Following T-Shirt is available to purchase online for $30, and as it says, it’s rated “T” for Teerrific.

Gollum Night Light: Precious Dreams

Gollum is far from being cute and cuddly. Most kids I know don’t like him because he’s a shady character overall, but that’s probably because he wasn’t meant to be a cute or cuddly creature anyway.

That said, it’s probably clear that this Gollum night light wasn’t made or intended for kids to have, because it kind of defeats the purpose of having a night light in the first place.

Gollum Night Light

“Look son, there are no monsters under your bed. I’ll just leave this Gollum night light in your room so you can see for yourself…” Yeah, I’d like to imagine how that’d turn out for the son (and the father, when he eventually wakes up to howls and cries from his terrified child.)

Gollum Night Light1

On the other hand, the Gollum night light would be awesome for fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise, as it’s made with intricate details and is hand-painted to boot.

It’s available from the Neatoshop for $17.96 (USD).
