EE’s ‘Swap’ brings another option for chronic phone-changers

EE switches on 4G in 13 more areas, claims half of the UK population now covered

If you’re the type to regard your six month-old handset like a relic from the stone age (and believe us, we are), then you’ve now got another option with EE’s Swap program. UK customers can now trade in their smartphones six months or later into their 18 or 24 month plans starting at £49. That appears to be EE’s attempt to catch up to plans like O2’s Refresh and JUMP from Phones 4u, but there’s a huge catch, of course. You’ll have to start a new 24 month contract from scratch, and the trade up price depends on which you end up choosing. Those opting for the cheapest £36 plan, for instance, will have to pay a much steeper £249. Still, for those of us who can barely stand going out with a mere Samsung Galaxy Note II when the Galaxy Note 3 is now in the zeitgeist, it’s a small price to pay.

AT&T cuts smartphone prices in half, jumps on the discount bandwagon

AT&T cuts smartphone prices in half, jumps on the discount bandwagon

If you’re looking for a new smartphone, this is apparently the weekend to go shopping. Following Radio Shack’s promise to chip in a $100 Google Play credit with purchase an HTC One and Walmart’s deep iPhone discounts, AT&T has quietly tacked on a 50% discount for phones under $199. This puts devices like the HTC One, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 (and the S4 Active), the Note II, both of BlackBerry’s latest handsets and iPhone 5 at an enticing $100. Naturally, Ma Bell has attached the usual hooks: the deal necessitates a new 2-year agreement or contract renewal, and in-store purchases require a trade-in device to activate the discount. Not a bad deal if you’re hankering for new hardware — just make sure you don’t walk away with buyer’s remorse.

RadioShack bundling $100 Google Play store credit with HTC One purchases

Loyal Engadget readers know that we don’t normally trouble ourselves with promotions, but this one is too wild to ignore. Until June 30th, RadioShack is offering the HTC One to AT&T and Sprint customers with an added bonus — a $100 credit for the Google Play store. Should you elect to sign up with Sprint, you’ll basically get away like a bandit since RadioShack has slashed the price of the handset to $79.99 for new activations — on two-year contracts, of course. After all is said and done, you would basically leave $20 richer than when you started (sort of). So, if you’ve been lusting after the HTC One but have held off on buying it, the universe might be trying to tell you something.

Microsoft promo: buy a Surface RT, get a free keyboard cover (updated)

Microsoft promo buy a Surface RT, get a free Touch or Type Cover

There’s no question that the Surface RT comes into its own with a keyboard cover; we can’t imagine using the tablet unadorned. Microsoft can’t, either, as it’s launching a promo that gives the covers away. Americans and Canadians who buy the Windows RT slate between now and the end of June can get either the Touch Cover or the Type Cover for free, no matter which color they fancy. Surface Pro customers are out of luck, but it’s hard to dispute the value for prospective Surface RT owners — the deal amounts to at least a $100 discount on the touch PC’s real-world price.

Update: To be clear, this promo has been running in other countries; it’s just now debuting in North America, however.

Microsoft Gives Away Free Wi-Fi Routers Tucked Inside Forbes Magazines

As more publishers make the move to digital publishing, it seems like print publications are dying a slow death. Some magazines have resorted to including a small freebie with every issue, from free posters and coupons to pens and now even Wi-Fi routers. The last one only applies to select issues of Forbes which were sent to various technology and business professionals.

microsoft forbes wi fi router

Each of these issues had a special four-page insert that provided the reader with 15 days of free wireless Internet care of T-Mobile. The insert was part of a promotion for Microsoft’s Office 365.

The compact router inside has to be charged up first before usage. After that, users can expect to get up to three hours of access from each charge. Wi-Fi is meant to be shared, so they made sure that the mobile hotspot can provide Internet access for up to five different devices.

This is one of the cooler tech gifts I’ve seen being given away in a magazine, so you might want to grab a copy of the May 6, 2013 issues of Forbes before the Wi-Fi-packed ones run out.

John Lewis stores let you buy a gadget, get half a year of free broadband

John Lewis stores offer half a year of free broadband with new gadgets

Retailers will try any number of stunts to get our feet in the door when they’ve got inventory to clear or services to push, whether they’re offering straight-up discounts or giving away devices. UK retailer John Lewis would really, really like us to try its home broadband, so it’s trying a related yet uncommon strategy: buy an internet-capable device by April 15th, 2014 and John Lewis will supply half a year of broadband for free, even at fiber optic speeds. As always, though, there’s an asterisk at the end. Would-be customers need to sign up for a year-long service contract to qualify, so they’ll be paying between £25 to £39 per month ($38 to $60) for at least another half-year. We doubt many will shift their laptop or tablet purchases just to get cheap data, but the promo may tip the balance for those experimenting with internet providers or wiring up a new flat.

Virgin Mobile offers $100 rebate to T-Mobile turncoats, now through May 31st

Virgin Mobile offers $100 rebate to TMobile turncoats, now through May 31st

In the wake of T-Mobile’s recently unveiled Simple Choice plans, Virgin Mobile is capitalizing on the shakeup by playing a value card of its own. Now through May 31st, the Sprint-owned MVNO is offering $100 credit to all T-Mobile subscribers willing to port their number to Virgin Mobile. Study the numbers for yourself and the deal seems a no-brainer, as Virgin matches T-Mobile’s unlimited scheme with a monthly bill of only $55, which rings in $5 less than the UnCarrier’s $60 (2.5GB) alternative. Naturally, that’s where Virgin Mobile hopes the conversation ends, but we don’t need to tell you that there’s quite a difference in speed between Virgin’s EV-DO / WiMAX service and the speedier HSPA+ / LTE alternative from T-Mobile. That said, if your inner cheapskate is tingling, you’ll now find an extra $100 incentive to make the switch.

Lenovo’s Yoga bus spins you round like a record, baby (video)

Lenovos Yoga bus spins you round like a record, baby video

Promoting Lenovo’s range of Yoga transforming devices requires a certain amount of original thinking. That must be the reason the company installed a rotating chair wheel into a glass-sided bus and forced unsuspecting users to use the new transforming Ultrabook while dangling upside down. Still, the participants don’t seem to disturbed by all of the gravity-defying computing, and if you’d like to watch their travails, you can catch it after the break — albeit with a soundtrack that’s a little on the salty side.

PSA: Box offering 25GB free space in football-themed promo

PSA Box offering 25GB free space in footballthemed promo

While Box likes to hand out large amounts of cloud storage like so much candy, it’s only so useful when the capacity is often linked to new devices. At least for a short while, there’s no strings attached: to coincide with a recent big football event, the company is reviving a promo strategy that gives away 25GB of space to new customers on free plans. As always, there are catches. The account has to be for personal use, and you’ll still deal with the 250MB file size cap from the ordinary free tier. If those aren’t obstacles, we’d hurry — Box doesn’t say when the deal ends, and there’s no guarantee that it’s as fond of sports as some of us.

AMD offering Never Settle: Reloaded games bundle with Radeon HD 7000 series GPUs

AMD offering Never Settle: Reloaded games bundle with Radeon HD 7000 series GPUs

If you’re the fidgety type that’s also in the market for a new GPU, AMD’s ready to tempt you into springing for a Radeon HD 7000 series card with the promise of free gaming swag. The imaginatively named “Never Settle: Reloaded” bundle reuses several titles from last year’s promotionFarcry 3, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman: Absolution — and adds a few more it hopes will grab your attention: BioShock Infinite, Crysis 3, DmC Devil May Cry and Tomb Raider. AMD’s 7770 GHz Edition GPU no longer qualifies, but purchase a 7800 or 7900 series card and you’ll be given at least a couple of games to enjoy on your new hardware. Exactly what software you’ll receive varies on how much dough you’re waving around and what region you’re shopping in, so head to the source link for a full rundown of the options. A single 7990 or a two-pack of 7900 series cards will get you the most games, but if you don’t quite have the bread, ask Lara for a loan — she might be willing to share some of her perilous adventure fund and help you out.
