Xbox founder says Apple TV could “simply kill” gaming consoles

The Apple TV is a fairly simple product. It’s a standard set-top box that allows you to stream content and even beam content from an iOS device to your big-screen living room television. However, the founder of the Xbox gaming console, Nat Brown, says that if Apple wanted to, they could easily destroy the Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii.

apple_tv-580x386

In a blog post, Brown says that there are numerous problems with the Xbox platform that leaves the door wide open for Apple. Plus, Microsoft has been making it extremely difficult to develop games for the Xbox, and it doesn’t really cater to indie developers. The Apple TV, on the other hand, runs iOS, which allows for anyone to develop apps and games fairly easily, which has spawned a wealth of games for users to play.

Of course, the Apple TV isn’t catered as a gaming platform, although it’s only a matter of time before that could happen. You can actually beam iOS games to your living room TV using the set-top box, but the Apple TV itself isn’t a gaming console by any means. However, that could change with just a few more advanced features added on.

In the end, Brown notes that the past five years have been painful to watch, in regards to the Xbox, because Microsoft has essentially failed to innovate and capitalize on the potential of innovations, like the Kinect sensor. Brown also wishes that Microsoft adopted a similar model for game and app distribution that iOS and Android have been using in order to create huge and successful gaming ecosystems.

The Last of Us Release Date Delayed Until June 18

The Last of Us Release Date Delayed Until June 18

Fans of Naughty Dog’s upcoming game The Last of Us were no doubt anticipating the game’s release on May 7, but it seems like you’ll have to wait a bit longer as Sony quietly pushed the game’s release date.

The good news is the delay will not be that bad as it’s being delayed by a little over a month to June 18, which BestBuy has confirmed to their pre-order holders. Since Sony has yet to make the news official, there’s no information at this time as to what exactly is the reasoning behind the delay. (more…)

YouTube’s PS3 app arrives (very) fashionably late to Europe

YouTube comes to PS3 with new look, moar cats

If you arrive so late to a party that your dress is now out of style, that’s pushing it a bit, no? Such is the case with YouTube’s PlayStation 3 app, which finally made it across the pond dressed in the same threads we saw way back in August of last year stateside. Europeans will now get the same smartphone remote control, searching functions and subscription channels we saw earlier, along with support for Swedish, Italian, German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Russian languages. That still leaves Scandinavian nations in the lurch, but Google’s promised that as localized versions of YouTube have now launched there, Denmark, Norway and Finland will soon have a slice of YouTube app cake for their PS3s, too.

Gioteck GC-2 PS3 controller tweaks pressure sensitivity on the fly, tips hat to Xbox 360

Gioteck GC2 PS3 controller tweaks pressure sensitivity on the fly, tips hat to Xbox 360

Love your PlayStation 3, but prefer Microsoft’s controller layout? You’ve got options, the latest being Gioteck’s GC-2 PS3 gamepad. Adopting the Xbox 360 controller layout, the GC-2 appears to do an admirable job of repositioning your thumbs, but its appeal lies in how much you’ll have to twiddle those digits. Hidden among the controller’s bevy of commonplace features (wireless connectivity, a turbo button and force feedback) is a thumbstick sensitivity toggle — allowing gamers to switch between four different levels pressure sensitivity. Hardly revolutionary, but it’s nice to know there are options when in-game settings don’t cut it. PlayStation 3 owners can pick up the GC-2 now for $40, and Gioteck says a Wii U variant will be available in April. See the full press release for yourself after the break.

Rayman Legends Releasing On Xbox 360, PS3 & Wii U September 2013

Rayman Legends Releasing On Xbox 360, PS3 & Wii U September 2013

One of Nintendo’s biggest Wii U exclusives this year, Rayman Legends, has just been announced by Ubisoft to no longer be exclusive to the console as releases on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will be expected later this year.

If that wasn’t enough of a big slap in Nintendo’s face, Ubisoft is also announcing the game will be delayed from its original Wii U-exclusive launch date of February 26 to release on all three platforms in September 2013. After spending several hours conducting our own very elaborate and intense research, that equates to a seven month delay. This leads us to wonder why exactly did Ubisoft wait three weeks before Rayman Legends was expected on the Wii U to announce this monumental change.

Wii U fans must be feeling duped at this point as there are no releases expected for the month of February now that Rayman Legends is out of the picture. Meanwhile, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners are probably excited to hear the sequel to one of the best side-scrolling adventures will be hitting their platform of choice this fall.

The Last of Us 2-Minute Gameplay Trailer Makes Us Afraid Of The Dark

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us will be releasing on May 7 for the PlayStation 3, and the trailers that have been released for the game have already colored us impressed. We’ve seen the game’s story slowly progress as well as a number of stealth-action sequences, but the gameplay footage that’s been released today shows a completely different side of The Last of Us.

The gameplay footage that was captured by GamesHQMedia shows just three minutes of in-game footage, but it does a lot in those three minutes. In the video, we see Joel making his way through a dark train station that’s filled with what looks to be infected zombies, which are randomly shuffling around through the station. Ellie assists Joel as she whispers suggestions to him in order to help with the dangerous process of getting rid of each of the infected that are in their way.

What makes the footage so great is the sound effects, which we’re sure once the game releases, we’ll be jumping all over our couch at any little creepy sound effect we hear in the dark. Judging by the ending of this video, we’ll have a very good reason to be jumpy in the dark.

God of War: Ascension bundle comes with Garnet Red PS3

What is your first memory or experience with the God of War series? I don’t suppose it is a “love it or hate it” case with this kind of hack-and-slash title, and there is a visceral sense about it, too. Having said that, I did enjoy the game a whole lot, and my personal favorite is the one on the PSP – don’t ask me why, I am just rather partial to gaming on the mobile front more than using a home video game console. Having said that, fans of the God of War franchise will be pleased to hear that God of War: Ascension’s arrival at stores this coming March 12th will be commemorated with the introduction of a limited edition God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle just in case you have not yet, for some strange reason or another, picked up a PS3 console after all these years.

If you happen to have $349 to spare, then you would be pleased to hear that this is how much the God of War: Ascension limited edition bundle will cost you. For starters, there will be a 500GB Garnet Red PlayStation 3 system packed inside, coupled with the whole God of War storyline that will include the new God of War: Ascension and of course, the God of War Saga (which comprises of all five of the previous games from the franchise). The good news does not end there as well though, as you will be on the receiving end of a 30-day PlayStation Plus trial membership.

The complete God of War game collection will definitely roll back the years for some of you fans out there, as you can relive your favorite series moments with the God of War Saga, which comprises of God of War, God of War II, God of War III, and God of War: Origins Collection, which consists of God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

God of War: Ascension Live Action Trailer Has Us Feeling Kratos’ Pain And Suffering

It seems Sony has been having quite the time teasing gamers this week as they teased a possible God of War announcement to be revealed today and something PlayStation related to be revealed on February 20th. We’re nowhere near February 20th, but today, we do get to find out what exactly Sony had planned for February 1st, or “Game Day” as they called it.

The big reveal is a new God of War: Ascension live-action trailer called “From Ashes.” The trailer literally gave me chills when I first watched it as any God of War fan knows what exactly happens for Kratos to earn the ashes that cover his entire body.

In God of War: Ascension, we’ll take a look at Kratos before his memorable journey through God of War 1-3 when he was just a simple soldier. Sony teases that Ascension players will experience the pain and loss Kratos experienced and today’s live-action trailer certainly sets the stage for the experience.

God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle Brings Garnet Red PS3 To The Fore

God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle Brings Garnet Red PS3 To The ForeAre you one of the few folks out there who love all things video games on the home console front, but somehow or rather, you never managed to bring yourself to purchase a Sony PS3 in the current console cycle? Perhaps it is about time you remedy the situation by picking up the God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle that will see the inclusion of a 500GB Garnet Red PlayStation 3 system. Of course, this limited edition bundle will also include the whole God of War storyline so that you will be more or less occupied until this summer assuming you put in a half hour of gaming each day.

God of War: Ascension will be the star of the bundle though, and if you haven’t touched any of the God of War games in the past, perhaps going through the God of War Saga first before touching the “main dish” would be a good idea for folks who love chronology and order. Other than that, Sony has also thrown in a 30-day PlayStation Plus trial membership, and this collector’s bundle will be made available from March 12th onwards.
