The Last of Us Gets May 7th 2013 Release

If you have been wondering just when will Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us be released, well, we have good news for you. Excellent news, in fact. The Last of Us is tipped to be released on May 7th next year, so that would mean a wee bit less than half a year of waiting left to go. I guess you can take the time this Christmas to amass plenty of other games to play through the winter and spring, and just as summer is about to rear its head, you can then pace yourself through those games to finish them just as The Last of Us is released.

A new trailer has been released, where it intends to remove all possible spoilers and yet drop some hints at the tense, emotional narrative which the development team has painstakingly crafted for The Last of Us. Not only that, folks who place a pre-order for The Last of Us will also be on the receiving end of bonus content, where among them include the game’s official soundtrack, a PS3 dynamic theme featuring the cover art, and a couple of avatars for your PSN profile, namely Winter Joel and Winter Ellie. How is that for value? Are you stoked yet?

Netflix 1080p streams no longer called X-High, company credits improved encodes

Netflix 1080p streams no longer called XHigh, company credits improved encodes

While Netflix Watch Instantly movie streams are mostly useful for casual viewing, if you’re interested in the actual quality of the video provided you may have noticed a few changes recently. Chronicled in a thread on AVS Forum and reported to us by several tipsters, more than a few users have noticed their streams on 1080p-capable hardware (PlayStation 3, WDTV Live) no longer rock the “X-High” notification (on PS3, hit select to view more information bout your streaming details) that had previously let them know they were getting the highest quality possible. We checked with Netflix, and according to the company, it’s rolling out better encoding that improves picture quality despite using a lower bitrate. That means 1080p works even for people with slower connections, and increases detail on “textures, shadows, skies, and particularly faces.” As a result, what was previously called “X-High HD” is now being labeled a tier lower.

While it wasn’t mentioned specifically, some are theorizing the move is tied into Netflix’s use of eyeIO’s video encoding tech, which it announced earlier this year, to shrink the size of streams. eyeIO claims it can chop bandwidth by more than half for a 720p stream, something we’re sure a company that’s pushing as much data as Netflix would appreciate. Still, some viewers in the thread are claiming a noticeably softer picture as a result. Check after the break for the statement from Netflix, then take some time for “research” and let us know if you’re noticing any changes in picture quality lately.

Sony launches web store for PlayStation games, movies and TV shows (update: Europe-only, PS3 downloads work!)

Sony launches webstore for PlayStation games, movies and TV shows

Catching up to Microsoft’s own web-based Xbox store, Sony’s unleashed a new online store for its movie, TV and video content– but neglected to mention it. Titled the Sony Entertainment Network, and separate to its own book store we were able to login to the UK site and found that content pricing matched what we’ve seen on the PlayStation Store and other Sony digital shops. As an example, the complete Mass Effect trilogy rings in at £60 ($96), although Sony is kind enough to offer links to discounted titles, PlayStation Plus highlights and other offers at the top of the browsing sidebar — Tokyo Jungle is today’s holiday deal at £5 ($8). Purchases can be done through the store, with the product downloaded to your game console when it’s turned on next. Video content, meanwhile, can be purchased and then played on your PC, as well as on the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, PSP, Sony Tablets and compatible Xperia smartphones. Even if you’re balking at some of those early prices, it might be worth browsing through some more palatable festive deals by visiting the source below. We’ll have more when we hear the official line from Sony.

Update: We’ve been unable to access our downloads just yet, something that was also noted by Eurogamer, which spotted that content can also be purchased through Paypal. PlayStation Blog manager Fred Dutton has added that the store is currently under testing, and that Sony are set to announce the full details of the service soon — no harm in taking an early look, however.

Update 2: After digging around in our PS3’s network settings, we were able to discover our web-based purchases and start downloading them to the console, although it wasn’t the most clearcut way to get to them. Unfortunately, it looks like the service won’t officially launch until next week and our US editors have had no luck connecting to the service so far, suggesting that at this stage it’s still being tested before being rolled out further.

Bethesda: Work on Dawnguard and Hearthfire for PS3 to continue after Dragonborn

A few days ago we shared what seemed like good news that the Skyrim Dragonborn DLC would be arriving for the PlayStation 3 and PC come early 2013. While that’s great news for PS3 gamers who have had the short end of the stick when it comes to Skyrim DLCs, the question we’re sure many are wondering is when the previous two Skyrim DLCs will arrive on the PS3, if at all. After all given that it would seem like little progress has been made with Dawnguard and Hearthfire, we can’t blame PS3 gamers for thinking that the previous two DLCs are lost to them. The good news is that if you still have a hankering for Dawnguard and Hearthfire come 2013, Bethesda has announced that they will continue working on the previous two DLCs once Dragonborn has been released. PlayStation 3 now #1 device for Netflix streaming

Sony announced today that the PlayStation 3 is now the most popular platform to watch Netflix on. The streaming service is currently available on every major gaming console and most mobile devices, as well as the Netflix website. Out of all those platforms, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Phil Rosenberg says that “more people stream Netflix content to their televisions via PS3 than any other device worldwide.”

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also had some words about the recent milestone for Sony and the PlayStation 3. He says that the “PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing” and deploying the service’s newest features. Hastings says that it’s really easy to update the Netflix PS3 app, and it allows the company to “transparently update” the application with new features “on a daily basis.”

The PlayStation 3 first introduced Netflix over three years ago, and it’s been a platform for which many Netflix features have been released first. For instance, the PlayStation 3 was the first to offer Netflix in full 1080p video resolution with 5.1-channel surround sound, as well as offering post play, second-screen controls, on device sign-up, and subtitles.

Last year, though, the Nintendo Wii held the crown for the most-popular Netflix streaming device, according to Nielsen. The research firm reported that the Wii represented 25% of Netflix’s market share, with the PlayStation 3 trailing behind at 13%. We’re not sure how long the PS3 will be able to keep its #1 spot, but we reckon that it won’t be held onto forever.

BioShock 2 now free to play all week long for PlayStation Plus subscribers

Sony will be pushing an update to its PlayStation Store tomorrow that will introduce a slew of deals that users will want to take advantage of. One of the better deals, however, is that they’re releasing BioShock 2 to the ever-expanding Instant Game Collection for free this week. The game will be available for free if you’re a Plus member once the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow.

BioShock 2 was released in February 2010, and it’s the sequel to the original BioShock, which featured some of the best gameplay elements we’ve ever seen. All week long, PlayStation Plus users will have the chance to download and play the game for free via the service’s Instant Game Collection.

Other deals for Plus subscribers include a 10% discount on Rockstar Games Collection Edition 1, which is a bundle that includes Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, L.A. Noire, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles Complete Edition. The bundle usually costs $59.99, but Plus members can pick it up for $53.99 — not a huge discount, but better than no discount at all.

Puzzle game Puddle will also be 50% off on both of its platforms, costing only $5 for PlayStation 3 gamers and just $4 for PlayStation Vita users. However, it’s not cross-platform compatible, so if you want the game on both systems, you’ll have to cough up $9 for the pair. Sony has said that they plan to release weekly updates to the PlayStation Store that will include new deals and offers for every week all month long.

Sony moved 525K PlayStation 3 consoles during Black Friday week, 160K Vitas

Microsoft and Nintendo aren’t the only game console manufacturers enjoying Black Friday frenzy — Sony today announced that over 525K PlayStation 3 consoles were sold in the US between November 18th and 24th (which includes the big day), adding to the 70 million PS3s in the world. Another 160K PlayStation Vitas were sold between the 19th and 25th, spurred by hefty Sony-backed discounts. The numbers mark a nine percent increase over last year’s PS3 sales; as this is the Vita’s first Black Friday year, 160K will be the number to beat in 2013. Without offering any actual numbers, Sony also says its PlayStation Plus subscription rate via PlayStation Network increased 259% last week — it’s unclear if this includes the free subs found in many Black Friday bundles and individual games. The service grew considerably recently with the launch of PS Plus on Vita, and bolstered its free game lineup with some of the Vita’s best offerings, no doubt attracting many new customers.

Skyrim content for PS3 “will be coming”, but still being worked on

We’re pretty sure by now that many PS3 owners are sick and tired of hearing (we do read your comments!) about Skyrim DLCs that may or may not make it onto their consoles, and to be fair based on the tweets by Bethesda and Pete Hines, they have not exactly been positive, although in the latest tweet by Pete Hines, it looks like things could start looking up for PS3 Skyrim gamers. In response to a Twitter user over the lack of updates on the PS3, Hines replied by saying, “We continue to work on it. And content will be coming to PS3. Will give details when I have them.”

This is definitely a change from previous tweets which was basically Bethesda admitting that there were issues to be ironed out and that details will be shared when there were any to be had – this particular tweet actually says that content “will be coming” to the PS3! Before PS3 gamers get too excited, there is still the question remaining on WHEN said content will be arriving, but in the meantime hopefully some comfort can be taken in what can be described as being the most positive tweet yet by Bethesda/Pete Hines.
