Microsoft and Sony reveal Black Friday gaming deals

Black Friday is one week away, and retailers are already pumping out their Black Friday adverts to those hungry for some crazy deals. Both Microsoft and Sony have announced the deals that they’ll be offering on their gaming consoles and bundles. They prove that if you’re looking to get a new Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation Vita, next Friday is the time to buy.

PlayStation Vita bundles will sell for $199 each, and will come in three different bundles. One will come with a limited edition white Vita with Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation and a 4GB memory card. The other two will come with a black WiFi Vita model with either Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified and a 4GB memory card, or Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

Sony will also have a $199 PlayStation 3 bundle that will include a 250GB console, Uncharted, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Infamous, Infamous 2, and Infamous: Festival of Blood, as well as a 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus. Sony will also be offering DualShock 3 controllers for $39.99 “at select retailers nationwide.”

Microsoft will also be offering console bundles for their Xbox 360, but the bundles will vary between different retailers. Walmart will have a special edition white 4GB console with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and a Skylanders figurine for $149. Best Buy, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and Newegg will have a 250GB Xbox 360 with Forza 4: Essentials Edition and Skyrim for $199. Target, Amazon, Sam’s Club, Meijer, Kmart, and Microsoft Stores will have a 4GB console bundled with a Kinect sensor and Disneyland Adventures for $199. GameStop will be offering a 250GB console with Call of Duty: Black Ops II for $249, RadioShack will have a 4GB console with a wired headset for $169, and Toys R Us will offer a 4GB console with a $50 gift card for $179.

Microsoft will also be discounting a handful of games at select retailers, and will also be offering a three-month Xbox Live subscription for $12.99. The games include Dance Central 3, Kinect Sports Ultimate, and Fable: The Journey for $29.99 each. Forza Horizon will be discounted to $39.99, and the purchase of Halo 4 at either Target or Amazon will net you a $20 gift card (plus a $10 instant video credit when you buy the game at Amazon).

Sony lowers PS3, PS Vita bundles to $199 for Black Friday madness

Black Friday’s coming and you know what that means: time to move some units. For two days only starting November 23rd, Sony’s knocking an additional $50 off existing PlayStation console bundles. Consumers with the wherewithal to withstand the shopping frenzy can snare the Ultimate PS3 Value Bundle (i.e. 250GB console, Uncharted Dual Pack, inFamous Collection and PS Plus trial) or one of three WiFi-only PS Vita deals (Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Lego Batman 2 or Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified) at select retailers for $199. Of course, if M for Mature’s not your bag, there’s always the family-friendlier Wii U to consider.

PlayStation 3 global sales hit 70 million

Since its launch in November 2006, the PlayStation 3 gaming console has seen 70 million units sold worldwide, as of November 4. What’s perhaps more impressive is that Sony has sold 15 million Move motion controllers since its launch just a little over two years ago. Move now supports over 400 titles on PlayStation 3.

The 70 million figure also matches the number of consoles that Microsoft sold with its Xbox 360, which they reported in their Q1 2012 back in October. However, Sony notes that the figures are confirmed as being “sell-ins,” meaning the sales represent the amount of units sold to retailers rather than to customers.

Currently, Nintendo leads the race to all-time global sales for any one console, with the Wii reaching just over 97 million units sold as of September 30. Plus, the company’s newest console, the Wii U, is releasing in just a couple of days, meaning that Nintendo will see even more sales coming their way soon.

There are currently around 3,600 games published for the PlayStation 3, with over 595 million copies sold worldwide. The PlayStation Network has also seen some fascinating numbers. The service now operates in 59 territories, and offers over 170,000 pieces of downloadable content, of which just 57,000 are game-related.

PlayStation 3 sales hit 70 million globally, over 15 million Move controllers sold

Sony has announced that it’s now sold over 70 million PlayStation 3 consoles — matching the number of Xboxes sold according to Microsoft’s latest financial report. Direct from the Japanese console maker, it also revealed that more than 15 million PlayStation Move motion controllers have been sold since its launch over two years ago. Meanwhile, the slightly aging (but constantly tweaked) base console is now approaching its sixth birthday, but there’s no word yet on its hardware successor, with Sony preferring to focus on new connectivity features between the PS3 and its handheld relative.

Need for Speed Most Wanted Demo Crashes onto Xbox 360 and PS3

There are few things worse than spending your hard-earned money on a video game and then finding out it’s crap. To avoid this problem I typically download the demo first and decide if it’s a good game before I spend my $50 or $60. If you’ve been on the fence about buying EA’s new Need for Speed Most Wanted video game, the demo is now available, despite the game being released two weeks ago.

EA announced that the demo is available right now on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. The demo let’s players cruise around the open world of Fairhaven City and gives you a good taste of what to expect from the full game. Players will get to drive an Aston Martin V12 Vantage to begin with and can find three other vehicles hidden around the city.

Those other vehicles include the Porsche 911 Carrera S, Audi R8 GT Spyder, and the Ford Focus RS500. Players of the demo will have to hunt down those cars to be able to drive them and unlock unique races, challenges, and mods they feature. Those who play the demo will be also able to achieve up to 50,000 Speed Points that will carry over into the full game if you purchase it.

Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer 2 live with gameplay

It’s time to take a peek at the next trailer for the upcoming beast of a game known as Grand Theft Auto 5. This traile brings on the heat from three different directions, taking what we found from the first trailer – a man (or men) looking for a new beginning and finding lots of evil around him. Now it’s time to get serious about what we’re actually going to be able to do in the game.

This trailer shows three men trying to get by in the world, each of them with their own terrible problems to deal with. You’ll see three different perspectives on the everyday situations of mob-connected or otherwise gang violence-toting regular Joe kind of fellows, complete with pistols under the covers. A lovely rendition of “Skeletons in my Closet” rings true as these three wild beasts take it to the streets and either try to keep the game going or stop it entirely – good luck to you, the player.

You’ll see all manner of vehicles, mind you, including helicopters, motorbikes, trains, and boats. The three of these guys appear to start their journeys off in completely different directions, but by the end of the video you’ll find that they’ve got to team up to take on whatever evil they’ve gotten themselves into. Expect not only to be acting as an anti-hero here – expect some hero action as well.

This game is set to bring on the largest live maps in the history of gaming and will be showing up with play that’s more high-definition than the folks at RockStar have ever brought on before. Also see if you can spot the Apple computer in the trailer – it’s hot!

Need for Speed Most Wanted demo now available for PS3 and Xbox 360

EA has announced that the demo for the new open world racing game Need for Speed Most Wanted is available right now. The demo is available for download for both PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. The game launched officially on October 30, but there may have been some players out there holding out for the demo to decide if they wanted to spend the money or not.

The demo starts players behind the wheel of one of the coolest cars in the game including the Aston Martin V12 Vantage, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Audi R8 GT Spyder, and the Ford Focus RS500. Those three additional cars are hidden in different areas of Fairhaven forcing players to search them out to drive them.

Each of the vehicles has its own unique races, challenges, and modifications that players can unlock. The game features Autolog 2 allowing for social competition when you’re online giving people the chance to beat rival times in certain races and other challenges. Players can rack up to 50,000 Speed Points playing the demo, which carry over into the full game.

Need for Speed Most Wanted offers seamless, nonstop multiple player action with no lobbies. The game also promises different events with persistent scoring and unlimited rewards. The game has received high scores in reviews and has proven to be one more popular games in the franchise.

Ken Levine Shows off Bioshock Infinite’s Ultimate Songbird Figure

If you’re like me, you’re pretty disappointed that Bioshock Infinite was delayed until February 2013. But I suppose I’d rather have a rock-solid game than one filled with bugs and rushed to market. One thing to look forward to when the game finally comes out is the awesome looking Ultimate Songbird Edition.

bioshock infinite songbird

The highlight of this massive $150 collectors edition of the game is a highly-detailed 9.75″ statue of the Songbird, a key character in the game – Elizabeth’s creepy bird-like protector feared by the residents of Columbia. In a video clip released today, the game’s creator Ken Levine gives us an up-close and personal look this beautiful hand-painted statue, along with the cool retro packaging it comes in.

In addition to the statue, the Ultimate Songbird Edition ships with a 64-page art book, a resin Handyman figure for playing the upcoming Bioshock Infinite board game, a cool lithograph promoting “Devil’s Kiss”, a murder of crows keychain and a copy of the game’s digital soundtrack. It also includes several bonus power-ups, costumes and PS3 and PC users get downloadable themes as well.

You can pre-order the Bioshock Infinite Ultimate Songbird Edition over on Amazon for $149.96(USD), and it ships on February 26, 2013 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

PlayStation Vita launches PS Plus service on November 20th, free for existing PS3 subscribers

Wrapped up in the Sony handheld’s version 2.0 update, the PlayStation Vita is finally getting PS Plus. Detailing the offering for European users, the subscription-based service will add four free games per month, with the launch line-up including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush and Chronovolt. Like its big console brother, you can expect to see discounted titles, free demos and other content arrive alongside full titles. Your Vita will also be able to tap into cloud storage for game saves, with an additional 1GB of space added for the portable console. If you’re already paying for PlayStation Plus on your PS3 ( three months at $18 or a one-year plan for $50), you’ll pick up the service for free on your Vita starting November 19th (and the 20th in Europe), provided they’re linked to the same PSN account. There’s a quick video outline (and the European press release) right after the break.

Hulu adds Kids section for little streamers, updates PS3 app with renewed remote support

Hulu adds Kids section for little streamers, updates PS3 app with renewed remote support

Whether you have streaming-savvy children, or are just a big kid yourself, Hulu has added a new section to its bulging catalogue specifically for you. Hulu Kids puts all the ad-free shows available to Plus subscribers in one place, and splits them into categories for filtering, say, only dinosaur-related programs. The section has its own website, or can now be accessed through the obvious option in the Browse menu. PS3 owners will be happy to know the Hulu Plus app has been updated, too, bringing back the Blu-Ray remote functionality that was, for some wacky reason, removed in the last update. And, what better way is there to relax after a humiliating public defeat than dropping the controller, and taking in a calming dose of SpongeBob?
