GameKlip Combines PS3 Controller with Android Phones: Poor Man’s PlayStation Phone

Unlike the messy controller situation in iOS, Android users have the benefit of workarounds for using controllers with their mobile device. One such solution is the Sixaxis Controller app, which pairs PS3 controllers with compatible Android devices. If you’re using the app, you might want to get the GameKlip as well.

Made by Ryan French, the GameKlip is simply a plastic mount that lets you connect a PS3 controller with an Android smartphone. The result is a semi-permanent, poor man’s portable gaming device.

The idea of carrying a PS3 controller around might seem odd at first, but if you frequently game on your Android device you might fall in love with this combo:

Wow. Now I’m envious of Android users. Again, the GameKlip is only a piece of plastic; you need an app and some tweaking to make the PS3 controller work with your phone, if it’s even compatible with the app. Still, it’s better than nothing.

As for the GameKlip, you can order it from its official website for $15 (USD). There’s also a $23 variant that comes with cables in case your smartphone can’t pair wirelessly with PS3 controllers. The GameKlip only works with the latest Galaxy phones and a couple of HTC models. Check out the official website to see the full list.

Sony’s Nasne TV tuner finally set to go on sale later this month in Japan

Sony's Nasne TV tuner finally set to go on sale later this month in Japan

Less than a month ago we heard the news of Sony having delayed the release of its Nasne system due to quality control issues, but that all looks to be sorted out now. The electronics giant’s said the NAS media streamer will finally be ready to hit Japanese shelves on August 30th for the previously known price of 16,980 yen (about $215) — which, as you know, offers a decent 500GB of storage for all your entertainment content. There’s still a few weeks until the eventual launch date, so that should be plenty of time to gather up some cash and be among the first to call one of these your own.

PlayStation 2 Software Emulator Hack Available for Jailbroken PS3s

The first four models of the PS3 were backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games. For reasons unknown, but most likely not related to its customer’s best interests, Sony later removed this feature. Now, the inevitable has occurred: tinkerers have brought the feature back via a software hack.

sony playstation 2While there have been gray market USB dongles that gave jailbroken PS3s this ability, this hack only requires software. This method supposedly works with all models of the PS3 (although it hasn’t been tested with all PS2 games), the sources below did mention that it requires users to replace some of the console’s system files.

Seems to me that this hack implies two things: a) this could very well ruin your console, and b) it would be easy for Sony to bring backwards compatibility back. It would also be nice if everyone had pet unicorns, but we don’t. So that’s that.

Unchartered 3 Version 1.13 is biggest patch from Naughty Dog to date

Developer Naughty Dog claims that Unchartered 3 Version 1.13 is their biggest patch to date, where they fully intend to turn transform the multiplayer component of the game into a compelling experience. Having learnt well from their summer beta and the Subway Taste for Adventure, these precious lessons were then implemented for action as part of the latest version’s launch. Patch 1.13 for Unchartered 3 Multiplayer was in the pipeline for months, and it is already available today.

Some of the highlights include a Tournament System that paves the way for gamers to enjoy a points-based competition which will feature three reward tiers. These reward tiers are “generous” in their own way, granting you special in-game weapons or items depending on how well you’ve played. The moment you successfully unlock a weapon or item, you can use it until the next tournament period. Not only that, you are also able to buy your way into a tournament via tournament tickets. There are always ten tickets per tournament period, although you can opt to purchase additional tickets over PSN. A tournament leaderboard will also make up part of the leaderboards section in order for you to keep track of your skill level among your mates. Have you given the Unchartered 3 Version 1.13 patch a go yet?

Sony nasne delayed PS3 PVR ships August 30

Sony has confirmed its rearranged launch plans for the nasne networked media recorder, having been forced to postpone sales last month after hard-drive faults were discovered in the first batch. The PS3-lookalike PVR will arrive in Japanese store shelves on August 30, alongside the similarly-delayed PS3 update and a new VAIO TV with nasne app for Sony laptops.

There’ll also be new software for Sony Tablet users, plus those with a PSP or PSP Vita ; they, along with their VAIO PC counterparts, will be able to remotely access the nasne and stream live and recorded digital terrestrial and satellite content across their network. Sony’s gadget also supports standard DLNA streaming for non-Sony devices, such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Smart TVs.

nasne packs both a terrestrial tuner and a satellite tuner, along with a 500GB hard-drive and a B-CAS card slot for paid broadcast access. It allows for live streaming and recording, as well as remote access from outside of the home network, pausing live TV, and sharing photos and music as with a regular NAS.

Originally, nasne was intended to go on sale on July 19 in Japan, but at the last moment Sony identified an issue with the SATA drives believed to be down to issues in how they had been transported. The PVR box is priced at 16,800 yen ($214), and Sony is yet to announce any international launch plans.

Skyrim Dawnguard DLC arrives on PC but not PS3 as Bethesda is not satisfied with its performance

Skyrim Dawnguard DLC has touched down for the PC, but it seems that the release of Skyrim Dawnguard DLC for the Sony PS3 has been delayed, with Bethesda stepping forward to claim that they will not go ahead with a release until they themselves are satisfied with the kind of performance the game gives on Sony’s aging console. Bethesda mentioned, “We are not satisfied yet with Dawnguard’s performance on the PS3. We would like for everyone to have a chance to play Dawnguard, but we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse. We do everything we can to have our content available to all; from our free updates, to user mods, to paid DLC. We’re as disappointed as our fans when that isn’t the case, but we’ll continue to push for that reality.”

I say that is a pretty good principle to stick to – after all, no one would enjoy a gimped video game simply because it is out early, and the developers might as well take some extra time required to polish up the game and remove whatever major bugs there are so that gamers do not end up frustrated and turned off completely. As for those who are rocking to an Xbox 360 or a PC, they have managed to enjoy Skyrim Dawnguard DLC since last night, and judging by initial impressions, PS3 owners take heart – it is going to be well worth the wait!

Sony Q1 2012: Income down 77% as gaming, mobile and TVs dive

Sony has revealed its latest financial results for Q1 2012, and the news is dire: operating income down 77.2-percent compared to last year, and losses of 24.6bn yen ($356m) for the three month period. A surprise boost in performance from Sony Mobile , brought in-house to the Mobile Products and Communications Division, saw overall sales reach $19.2bn, Sony says [pdf link], but the price of actually combining those teams disproportionally chewed through income.

Operating income sank to $79bn, which Sony blames on the MP&C division’s sales and restructuring costs, the latter of which alone amounted to $143m. On the flip side, insurance payouts post-Thailand flooding and some unexpected Blu-ray patent royalties helped fill Sony’s cup a little.

There remain some significantly underperforming divisions, however. Poor PS3 and PSP sales were “partially offset” by the PS Vita, but still overall declined 14.5-percent year-on-year to $1.5bn. Home Entertainment & Sound sank 26.2-percent, to $3.2bn, with sales of LCD TVs ditching in Japan, North America and Europe; similarly, LCD production underperformed.

One of the only bright points was Sony’s interchangeable lens cameras, which helped buoy the Imaging Products & Solutions division to a 7.6-percent increase compared to the same period last year, and sales of $2.5bn. Sony also managed to straighten out its supply chain for broadcast cameras and companion products, which boosted the division as well.

Sony has now cut its whole fiscal year estimates by 27.8-percent compared to May’s forecast. The company expects continued falls in key products and an ongoing negative impact from the strength of the yen versus other currencies.

Sony releases Q1 2012 financial results, eats $312 million loss

Sony's

Sony’s first-quarter figures for 2012 show that despite the company’s optimism three months ago, it’s made a net loss of $312 million. It pulled in a whopping $19.2 billion in sales for the three months ending June 30th, partly credited to bringing Sony Mobile fully into the family. However, the cost of restructuring the Mobile Products and Communications Division (of which Sony Mobile is a part) came to $143 million, wiping out the additional gains to record a loss of $356 million. Gaming-wise, the PlayStation maker suffered a $45 million loss as falling sales of the PSP and PS3 were only partially offset by the sales of the PS Vita. There was better news in its imaging division, while sales of compact cameras fell, DSLRs and “Professional” products took up the slack, resulting in a profit of $160 million.

In a trend we’ve seen across the Home Entertainment industry, sales of LCD televisions continued to fall, forcing the company to eat a loss of $126 million. Movie and TV recorded a loss of $62 million, although that’s primarily due to a dip in advertising sales in India and the cost of marketing (but not producing) The Amazing Spider-Man, the profits of which won’t be recognized until September. Finally, while it spent big to purchase EMI this quarter, big-ticket albums like Usher’s Looking 4 Myself and One Direction’s Up All Night helped the division make a profit of $92 million. While Sony’s treading water to execute Kaz Hirai’s “One” Strategy, it’s still got $8.4 billion stashed under the mattress, and in the face of lower sales, is hoping that reduced costs will help it make $1.6 billion in profit by the end of March 2013.

Netflix testing ‘Max’ assistant on some PS3 users to improve movie recommendations

Netflix testing 'Max' assistant on some PS3 users to improve movie recommendations

It’s not available to all, but if you’re running the latest version (2.08) of the Netflix app on your PlayStation 3 you may see a prompt for a new item called Netflix Max, spotted by one of our readers. Described by a PR rep we contacted as a “new user experience” the company is testing, the assistant talks to users directly and asks them to rate a few movies on the spot before providing new suggestions. The Noisecast was among the first to try out the new experience and even has a few tips on how to get it for yourself, although it didn’t work on our PS3, even after uninstalling and reinstalling the app to get the latest version. The blog mentioned it does more than simply rating movies also, as it sometimes asked users to select movies based on specific criteria, like the starring actors. It can be brought up by pressing the square button on your PS3 controller, although how much you enjoy the gameified experience may vary.

Pulling gems out of a catalog filled with older and lower profile movies is a complaint of many Netflix subscribers though, so any attempt to help is welcome, but we’re not immediately sure this is the way. According to Netflix, it’s waiting to see if the tool leads to “increased interaction” (read: more viewing hours / less likely to cancel, on average) before deciding whether or not to roll the tool out widely, so if you have it and like it, vote with your remotes.

Sony LittleBigPlanet Karting t-shirt contest announced

Sony sure is looking for a lot of attention for its newets Sackboy-featured PS3 game, LittleBigPlanet Karting. But it doesn’t want to do its own creative production. The company is holding a contest where users are asked to design a t-shirt for the upcoming PAX Prime event in Seattle. Whoever comes up with the best design wins a PlayStation Vita with 3G, and copies of LBP Karting for both the PS3 and Vita.

“Our artists can rework what you submit, so even if your drawing skills are not the greatest, go ahead and send in your creation! Winning designs will be selected by LBPK’s production team. We will take the winner’s design and place it on the exclusive T-Shirt that will be handed out at PAX Prime in Seattle,” Sony wrote in a PlayStation Blog post.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was supposed to be the game that let players create any kind of game they wanted. So, arguably, if you wanted a customizable LittleBigPlanet kart racing experience, you’d be able to create that already. But not everyone has that much time on their hands, so Media Molecule and development partners United Front Games will be bringing Karting to the PS3 as the next LBP entry. LittleBigPlanet is also making its way to the PlayStation Vita platform as well, so the series is still going strong.
