Namco’s Tales of Xillia confirmed for PS3

Namco’s highly popular “Tales” RPG series is going full steam ahead with its newest North American title Tales of Xillia. The game, which has already been released in Japan, will be exclusive to the PS3, incorporates a brand new battle system and what Sony describes as “a more grown-up visual style.” Sony released exhaustive details about the new title today.

In Japan, Tales of Xillia received a coveted 39/40 score in the prestigious Famitsu magazine. This makes it the highest-rated game ever in the “Tales” franchise. The series also marked its 15th anniversary with the title, pushing Namco to really develop something remarkable and different. It has graced multiple platforms but recently became more closely associated with the PS3, after the launch of Tales of Graces F.

“I believe the game was acclaimed because of its maturity as the 15th anniversary title in Japan. As I previously mentioned, we are always challenging ourselves to evolve the series and to develop each title that will surpass fan expectations from the last title. I think that these gameplay evolutions from game to game over the course of the past 15 years have helped the series earn its critical acclaim,” Namco said in a PlayStation Blog post.

The Laugh Factory app launching on PS3 September 1

When it comes to streaming video on gaming consoles, it takes a lot to be the “first” in any category anymore. The marketplace has certainly filled up quickly with all sorts of content. But Sony has found yet another niche – it claims to be launching “the first live comedy application available on any console.” It’s The Laugh Factory Live, and it’s coming to the PS3 on September 1.

If you’re looking at the logo above, you might be saying to yourself, “I recognize that image.” Yep, The Laugh Factory is a very iconic Hollywood comedy club and has played host to some of the most famous – and infamous – comedian performances of all time. Now, users will be able to watch future performances from the comfort of their couch – as well as an extensive collection of previous shows.

“The Laugh Factory is home to over 30 years of top quality entertainment, and for the first time ever, they’re opening their doors to a digital audience in a whole new way. We can’t wait for everyone to check out the app for themselves, and enjoy hours of comedy gold exclusively on PlayStation 3,” Sony wrote in a PlayStation Blog post. The app will launch on September 1, and users will be able to access content for free until December. After that, it will cost $3 per month.

Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault to have tower defense mechanic

If you’ve ever played through any of the always-addicting Ratchet & Clank games, once you get used to the zany cartoon style and not-always-sharp humor, there’s one thing that becomes instantly identifiable about the franchise – the weapons. Apparently, developers at Insomniac Games realized just how iconic its crazy R&C weapons are, and decided to capitalize on it for the next franchise installment.

So in Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, there will be a gameplay mecahnic that involves tower defense gameplay. For those of you who don’t know, a tower defense game is one where players set up turrets, weapons, and other automated guerilla warfare machinery to ward off streams of incoming enemies. Players do not directly attack the enemies and must instead hope their automated weapons set-up will do the job for them.

So bringing Ratchet & Clank’s weapons to that style of gameplay seems infinitely appropriate. Of course, there will still be the same platform-jumping, puzzle-solving, third-person assaulting that the series has always had, but “this new twist … brings a whole new level of strategy and decision-making to Full Frontal Assault. You’ll want to make sure your Hoverboots are laced up and ready as you race to defeat your enemy while keeping your base secure,” Insomniac’s James Stevenson wrote in a PlayStation Blog post.

Sony nasne PVR delayed after hard-drive damage

Sony has confirmed that its nasne networked PVR has been delayed, blaming unexpected damage to internal components and a shortfall in quality inspections at the factory. nasne, which can stream live TV and recorded content from its integrated tuners and 500GB hard-drive to the PS3 and other hardware, was expected to go on sale this Thursday in Japan, but Sony now says there will be a postponement of unspecified length.

According to Sony’s press release, the hard-drive inside nasne is the victim of the damage. Problems arising during transportation are blamed, though Sony also says that the factories responsible for producing nasne apparently skipped some of the quality inspections that might have identified the issues earlier.

Meanwhile, the v1.50 system update Sony had also scheduled for this week will be postponed as well. The new firmware will enable interconnectivity between nasne and Sony’s existing torne, as well as allow Xperia smartphones and tablets to remotely access content funneled across from the set-top box.

Sony hasn’t given a new date for nasne availability, and nor has the company said whether it will be releasing the STB outside of Japan.

Sony’s GT Academy top 16 drivers announced

Sony is making the dreams of 16 racing game fans come true by putting them behind the wheels of real-life professional racing cars. Players from all walks of life came together to compete in rigorous Gran Turismo battles, and now the best of the best are about to experience a pretty awesome prize.

The 16 finalists are going to be flown to the world-famous Silverstone racing circuit in the UK. There, they will all be put through a week-long racing “boot camp.” Their journey will be documented in a reality TV series on Spike TV later this year, the first time that the GT Academy competition has been transformed into a cable TV series.

“GT Academy North America finalists will be judged and eliminated by an expert panel of racing professionals, based on each competitor’s skills, performance and overall aptitude for the requirements to become a professional racer. The top driver will train under the guidance of professional racing drivers and compete in selected races for a Nissan racing team,” Sony explained in a PlayStation Blog post. More details are in the “via” link below.

16 Gran Turismo 5 Gamers Vie for Chance to Race for Real

Sony Computer Entertainment America, Polyphony Digital, and Nissan North America have announced that the final 16 Contestants have been chosen to compete for the top honors in the 2012 GT Academy North America TV show. The 16 gamers have been whittled from nearly 400,000 applicants that competed head-to-head on the PS3 videogame Gran Turismo 5 to win the chance at driving for a real race team.

The top 16 racers will fly to Silverstone racing circuit in the UK for a week-long boot camp in August. That week-long camp will be televised on Spike TV’s GT Academy TV series later this year. The driver who wins the contest will have a chance to race for an official Nissan racing team. The winner of last year’s competition was Bryan Heitkotter.

So far, he has raced a prepared Nissan 370Z race car to a podium finish in the Dubai 24 hours race, to front row qualifying spots, and two top 10 finishes in the Continental Tire Challenge Series. Not bad for someone who got his racing start playing a video game.

Nissan GT Academy final 16 get ready to race for real

We mentioned back in early May that the Gran Turismo GT Academy 2012 had kicked off. The top 32 drivers, out of roughly 400,000 Gran Turismo 5 racers, met in San Diego to whittle that 32-driver field down to the final 16. The drivers in the final 16 will compete to win a real race ride with Nissan in the GT Academy North America TV show.

The final 16 contestants will move on to the last round of GT Academy competing for the opportunity to race professionally for Nissan motors. The event to choose the top 16 drivers was held at a restaurant in downtown San Diego July 13-14. The top 16 drivers will fly to Silverstone racing circuit in the UK to participate in a weeklong boot camp in August. That week long boot camp will be televised on Spike TV GT Academy television series later this year.

During that week long boot camp, the 16 finalists will be judged and eliminated by a panel of racing professionals based on their skills, performance, and aptitude for professional racing. The top driver selected from the boot camp will be trained under the guidance of professional racing drivers and will compete in selected races for a Nissan racing team. The winner of the competition last year was Bryan Heitkotter, and he has been successful on the real racetrack finishing on the podium at the Dubai 24 hours and landing two front row qualifying spots along with two top 10 finishes in the Continental Tire Challenge series, and a race prepped Nissan 370Z.

Sony super-slim PS3 pictures leak

If you didn’t believe that a new, even slimmer version of the PS3 was on the way, maybe these new pictures will do the trick. The folks over at Technoblog managed to get hold of a set of pictures that claim to be a brand new version of the PS3, with a sleeker design than ever before. Among the details believed to be true are that it will have Bluetooth and 802.11b/g.

And also that it will come in models all the way up to 500 GB. It could very well be Sony’s way of saying that its console is still alive and kicking, and that gamers should not begin thinking about the PS4. Of course, very few details about the PS3 successor are known at this point. Frankly, it’s kind of hard to figure out what to make of the state of the gaming industry right now.

For the first time ever, we have 5- to 6-year-old consoles that are still chugging along. So, from Sony’s perspective, what point is there to revealing a PS4? What could it do that the PS3 can’t? If the answer is “not much,” then there’s no reason to unveil new hardware. This is of course uncharted territory for the console gaming market. Never before has a console lived on for more than five years with virtually no one wondering when the next one would come.

Ratchet & Clank Collection shipping August 28

The 1080p remaster of the classic games that put Insomniac Games on the map will be available on the PS3 on August 28. The collection will include all three Ratchet & Clank games from the PS2, available in full 1080p HD support, or 720p 3D support for those with the equipment to take their game to the next dimension. In addition to a complete remastering of the graphics, the games have added trophy support. And, where applicable, online multiplayer has been recreated to function with the Playstation Network.

Many gamers didn’t get to experience Ratchet & Clank’s online multiplayer when it was available on the PS2. So for the title Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, that functionality is being completely revived. The other titles in the remake, which will be released as one title called The Ratchet & Clank Collection, are Going Commando and the original Ratchet & Clank game that started it all.

Ratchet & Clank was one of the biggest blockbuster PlayStation franchises to make its way to the PS3. Insomniac is celebrating the franchise’s 10th anniversary this year, and plans to offer more special content in celebration of that. The collection will be available for $29.99. Sony told gamers to keep an eye out on its official Facebook and Twitter pages for the latest details.
