PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale adds Jak, Cole McGrath

The big brawl that will pit all your favorite Sony characters together in a crazy, no-holds-barred party just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Jak from Jak & Daxter and Cole McGrath from Infamous are the latest additions to the cast, as announced at Comic-Con. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is due out on the PS3 and the PlayStation Vita.

“Players familiar with Jak and Daxter’s arsenal will immediately recognize some of the weaponry utilized in PlayStation All-Stars including the Blaster, Needle Lazer, Gyro Burster, and Mass Inverter,” while with Cole, “players can command both his electrokinesis and cryokinesis, using these powers to assault opponents from a safe distance or propel himself towards the action,” Sony said in a PlayStation Blog post.

Super Smash Bros is a runaway success franchise for Nintendo. It would be crazy to think that anyone else could create such a fanatic following. After all, the mascots of Nintendo have more star power than any PlayStation or Xbox icon could have, simply because they have been around longer. Nevertheless, there is no disputing that PlayStation fanboys are more than ardent enough to make a Sony character fight fest a resounding success.

Slim PS3 spotted in the wild

More than a week ago, we realized that there is a slimmer PS3 in the works – the CECH-4000 model, and while not full frontal shots of the console were shown, it was only a matter of time. Today marks the first leaks of spy shots of the new, redesigned console from Sony, which was leaked by Brazilian website Tecnoblog. The photos that you see above do indicate that the slot-loading optical drive is no more, with the possibility that it has been replaced by a pop-up tray or sliding tray.

Located in front would be the pair of USB 2.0 ports that have not gone anywhere since they appeared on the original PS3, in addition to a removable 2.5-inch hard drive. When you flip the slim PS3 around, there is a solitary HDMI port that caters for all the High Definition goodness, an Ethernet port, a digital audio out (optical), AV multi-out and a power cable port. A trio of models were included in the leak, where they all sport different internal storage. The CECH-4011A, CECH-4011B and CECH-4011C will come with 16GB, 250GB and 500GB, respectively, according to the leak. 16GB does sound out of place, and 160GB would be a more comfortable figure.

Crunchyroll, Neon Alley heading to PSN

If you aren’t getting your share of streaming video content on your PS3 through Netflix, Hulu Plus, CinemaNow, YouTube, Crackle, etc, then maybe some news out of Comic-Con will be music to your ears. That is, assuming you’re a fan of anime. Two of the biggest anime streaming services are making their way to the PlayStation Network.

First up is Neon Alley, a brand new but already-noteworthy service powered by Viz Media. It’s a 24-hour anime channel that gives users access to unlimited hours of crazy exaggerated antics and zany battles between good and evil for a monthly fee of $6.99, about on par with Netflix but only for anime content. Yeah, anime fans are that devoted.

Naruto Shippuden, Inuyasha: The Final Act, and Death Note, as well as new titles such as Tiger & Bunny, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc, Zetman, and Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan are among the shows available on Neon Alley, which will launch in the fall. Also announced was Crunchyroll, which also offers streaming anime content on two tiered levels of either $6.95 per month or $11.95 per month. PS3 users are eligible for a 30-day trial.

Did Sony’s latest PlayStation 3 redesign just get outed by Brazil’s Anatel?

Remember that mysterious new PS3 variant that passed through the FCC not too long ago? Although that listing didn’t have photos to confirm a redesign, a new one has hit Anatel (essentially Brazil’s version of the FCC) with a quartet of pictures in tow. Specifically, it cites models CECH-4011A, CECH-4011B and CECH-4011C, matching up well with the 4K labeling from the aforementioned FCC visit — if you’ll recall, the current PS3 Slim has a 3K model number. According to Tecnoblog, the the three models point to a shockingly storage-cramped 16GB version, along with 250GB and 500GB variants. While this Anatel document appears to be from Sony, we’d be remiss not to mention that we haven’t been able to load the photos as Tecnoblog has. In terms of looks, apart from appearing extra slim — and decidedly less attractive — the system notably seems to be rocking a top-loading disc drive (this would be a first for the PS3). For now, we’d advise taking this potential leak with a grain of salt, but rest assured that we’ll inform you if we hear anything official from Sony.

PS3 nasne update boosts console’s media credentials

Sony has announced an incoming media-centric update to the PlayStation 3, bringing the console up to speed for the new nasne networked recorder and NAS. Revealed back in April, nasne will hit Japanese shelves on July 19 along with system software update v1.5, allowing the PS3 to stream live and recorded content from the STB to their console, and introducing smartphone browser support for remote control. However, Sony will also begin collaboration with other companies on open DLNA support.

Sony says it plans to “proactively collaborate with DLNA client software developers to enhance compatibility between their software and nasne, so that users can enjoy even more content on their devices through the media server features.” That could mean the tuner-enabled box ends up useful even to those without a PS3; Sony had already said it would be streaming content from nasne to VAIO computers, its Smart TVs, and its Xperia phones.

The new update will also enable inter-compatibility between nasne and torne, and Sony has partnered with Japanese content providers SKY PerfecTV ! e2 and WOWOW. How nasne is presented to other devices via DLNA is also customizable, with user-selectable icons and a client management tool.

nasne is a compact tuner and DVR box, with integrated terrestrial and satellite digital tuners and a 500GB hard-drive. It hooks up to a wired network and can stream live and recorded content to multiple DLNA devices, while remote access from a web-based client is also supported. A USB 2.0 port supports adding extra storage.

Sony is yet to confirm whether nasne will go on sale outside of Japan, though the fact that the v1.5 software update announcement has been pushed out both in Japanese and English (which is not always the case) might imply that there are international launch plans on the drawing board. The STB is priced at 16,980 yen ($214).

Adidas miCoach for Xbox 360 and PS3 hits shelves in Europe

The Adidas miCoach game for Xbox 360 and PS3 has hit shelves, making its European debut today complete with motion-control and full body tracking as gamers compete with pro-athletes. Eighteen of the athletes from Adidas’ global campaigns are featured, including Kaka, Ava Ivanovic and Jessica Ennis, competing across six different spots, and there’s even a special appearance from Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.

miCoach has already made itself with its various smartphone mobile apps and web-based system of exercise tracking, but the new console game hopes to bring some of that competition to the living room. It will use the PlayStation Move and Kinect for Xbox 360 for optical body tracking, offering over 400 exercises with achievements all synchronized with a miCoach account.

PS3 owners, meanwhile, will also be able to add in a USB heart rate monitor, throwing in another element of body tracking. Each athlete involved will give a “master class” in their sport, and there’s extra downloadable content to build onto the sports included on-disc.

Adidas miCoach is available across Europe today, priced at £21.17 in the UK for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. US sales are expected to kick off on July 24.

PlayStation PLAY lineup announced

Sony has announced its plans for this year’s PlayStation PLAY promotion, which highlights a slate of new downloadable PlayStation Network games toward the end of summer. In addition to featuring specific titles to draw attention to the cream of the crop, gamers receive special discounts if they purchase multiple of the featured games.

Here is the full lineup: on July 31, The Expendables 2 Videogame launches. On August 7, Sound Shapes is released. On August 14, Papo & Yo becomes available, and on August 21, Counter Strike: Global Offensive hits the PSN. Each game will sell for $14.99. Those who belong to the premium PlayStation Plus service will be able to save $3 on each title.

Gamers who buy two of the games will receive a $3 PSN voucher. Those who buy three will get a $6 voucher, and those who buy all four will receive a $10 voucher. All games will be available for pre-order on June 24. This idea of pre-ordering digital content is still something to get used to, since the whole concept of pre-ordering is to ensure you get the title if it sells out. That’s not an issue with digital content. But I digress.

Sony’s MLB 12 The Show predicts AL All-Star win

Sony has once again put the power of its “MLB The Show” franchise to the test and used a simulation of MLB 12 The Show to predict who the winner of tonight’s All-Star game will be. The Sony exclusive title is considered the most sophisticated baseball simulation video game, even though hypothetical predictions of real-life games like this often do not come true.

Nevertheless, it’s always a part of the baseball season, so here’s what The Show has to predict this year. “After simulating tomorrow night’s 2012 All-Star Game, the win will go to the NL All-Stars, who will make it three in a row after a 13-year winless streak, hanging on to beat the AL by a score of 3-2 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri,” Sony wrote in a Playstation Blog post.

During the simulation, the AL started off with a 1-0 lead thanks to Prince Fielder, but the NL eventually managed to come ahead with a final score of 3-2. In honor of the All-Star Game, Sony has also launched MLB 12 The Show’s Home Run Derby Online, which users can download from the PS3′s Playstation Store. “So, while you’re watching your favorite sluggers compete in the State Farm Home Run Derby tonight (8:00pm EST on ESPN), you can duke it with your friends in your own virtual HR Derby from the comfort of your own home. Pretty cool, right?” Sony said.

Pigs beware: Angry Birds Trilogy coming to 3DS, PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year

Pigs beware: Angry Birds Trilogy coming to 3DS, PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year

Despite already being a massive success story on the Android and iOS platforms, Rovio’s clearly not planning on slowing down its Angry Birds adventure any time soon. Speaking to IGN earlier today, the company’s Executive Vice President of Games, Petri Järvilehto, told the site that the Angry Birds Trilogy is headed — in physical form, no less — to the 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this holiday season. Sadly, Järvilehto didn’t say how much we’ll have to spend on the bird-slinging trilogy, or when exactly it’ll be available at retail shops — though he did say you should “think of the game as the ultimate collector’s edition.” The Trilogy’s set to include the original Angry Birds title, Seasons and Rio, with the set expected to offer support for Kinect, Move and StreetPass on Nintendo’s three-dimensional handheld.
