Sony LittleBigPlanet Karting beta promised soon

Sony wants to let you know that the latest adventure for its easily recognizable Sackboy mascot is heading out to fans soon. And if you can’t wait for it to come to stores, you may be lucky enough to grab an early shot at LittleBigPlanet Karting when it arrives in beta form. Sony is encouraging players to keep an eye on the PlayStation Blog for their chance to get into the beta.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was supposed to be the game that let players create any kind of game they wanted. So, arguably, if you wanted a customizable LittleBigPlanet kart racing experience, you’d be able to create that already. But not everyone has that much time on their hands, so Media Molecule and development partners United Front Games will be bringing Karting to the PS3 as the next LBP entry. LittleBigPlanet is also making its way to the PlayStation Vita platform as well, so the series is still going strong.

A post on the PlayStation Blog described the new game, saying, “Our goal with LBP Karting has been fairly simple – provide a fast-paced experience that captures the best of classic karting gameplay, married with the unbridled creativity of LBP. This new adventure will be accessible to players of all ages and have all of the variety necessary to satisfy both the hardcore and more casual players.” Further details, including release date information, will be released at a later time.

Epic Games: Infinity Blade on iOS more profitable by the pound than any other game we’ve made

Infinity Blade 1 on iPad

Traditional console makers have often sworn up and down that mobile doesn’t make money for game development. That might still be true for some developers, but you’ll get a very different answer if you ask Epic Games. Co-founders Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein have collectively described the currently iOS-only, Chair-developed Infinity Blade as the “most profitable game we’ve ever made” when considering the amount of money and time invested relative to the money coming back. Yes, that includes even the Gears of War series, which most consider Epic’s primary cash cow. Sweeney, like his long-time competitor Johh Carmack at id Software, is also taken aback by the power stuffed inside the latest generation of mobile devices — a 2012 iPad is nearer the performance of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, he tells Gamasutra, and the pace is only picking up. Even more insights await in the interview with Sweeney; click below if you want a hint of what one of gaming’s pioneers has to say about where your tablets, phones and (yes) PCs are going.

LittleBigPlanet Karting Beta on its way

Racing games are definitely not new, and I remember playing Death Track on the 8086 all those years ago, swapping floppies feverishly along the way. Well, you can say that Nintendo more or less popularized the idea of kart racing in a comical and cute manner with the Mario Kart series that is still going strong today across different platforms, and the Sony PS3 is not exempt from the karting mania as well with word that LittleBigPlanet Karting Beta is on its way to a release. The whole idea of LittleBigPlanet Karting Beta is to receive feedback on the overall experience of the game, and hopefully, with the kind of feedback that the development team received, they will be able to weed out any potential road bumps and release a smashing game in time.

Bioware Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is released

For those who still haven’t found their closure with Mass Effect 3, even after Bioware took the unprecedented move of creating a new ending, there’s a new hope. The company has rolled out Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a lengthier edition of the previous download with more content and additional plot resolutions. Gamers have mixed reactions about the whole ordeal, but many at least appreciate Bioware doing something about it.

The Extended Cut file is available as a free download, of course, and it provides only minor additions to the new ending that fans of the game had already experiences. In addition, those who really cared about Mass Effect already got their hands on the extra content that’s available in the new download. Nevertheless, Bioware hopes it is making good on its promise to rectify what was a PR nightmare that began shortly after the title first went on sale.

The general reaction seems to be that this is the ending Bioware should have included from the beginning. While you’ll never have something that everyone loves, creating something that everyone hates is far more polarizing. The Extended Cut will transition into a paid download after April 2014, so there’s still plenty of time to catch up even if you still haven’t played the first Mass Effect.

The Walking Dead video game continues Friday

Telltale’s video game adaptation of the cult hit-turned smashing success of a TV show The Walking Dead, will be getting its second episode on Friday, June 29. The Walking Dead: Episode 2 will go live on console digital download stores at that time, and your experience will vary depending on how you played the first episode. Telltale says it tracks every decision you make throughout the game’s multiple episodes.

The full game is set to be split up into five episodes, each of which will be sold on the digital download platforms for $4.99. Or, if you have a strong feeling that you’ll want to buy all five, you can buy the entire series upfront for $19.99, saving you an eventual $5 or so compared to buying each episode individually. Even though it’s a zombie game, though, don’t expect a hack-and-slash adventure.

Instead, this game is heavily driven by story and dialogue, and making decisions within the game. “Your decisions or actions might have an effect in the episode you’re playing or might affect the entire season. You could answer a question in a certain way and have a character become suspicious of your motives, or you could be forced to choose who to save when two people are in mortal peril but only one can be yanked back from the zombie horde. Your decisions will stay with you throughout the series, and their repercussions could mean that you and a friend have a very different game experience,” Telltale wrote in an earlier PlayStation Blog post.

PS3 game Journey to get retail treatment with Collector’s Edition

The small development studio known as thatgamecompany has pioneered a vision of redefining what a “video game” is. Its creations like Flow and Flower certainly have structure, gameplay mechanics, and goals to accomplish. But ask anyone what the story of either of these games is, or what happens if you die, and you’ll be waiting a long time for a solid response.

The latest creation is a downloadable game called Journey. The company’s creations are truly unique, and even though they may not be like anything you’ve ever played before, a lot of gamers – casual to hardcore – are becoming enamored with thatgamecompany’s style. So for the first time, it is branching out of the niche reach of the PlayStation Store and bringing its creations to a retail PS3 game that will launch later this summer for $29.99.

Although the title is ”
Journey: Collector’s Edition,” and it will be marketed as a retail version of the developer’s latest game, it includes complete editions of both Flow and Flower, as well as bonus content across all three games. In addition, customers who buy the retail disc will receive a free month of PlayStation Plus. No doubt Sony is banking on both newcomers to the franchise and the die-hard fans to make this venture profitable.

Sony PS3 firmware 4.20 heading out tomorrow

If you try to sign into the PlayStation Network tomorrow from your PS3, chances are you’ll be asked to download a firmware update before you’re allowed to access any other online content. Sony has announced that it will be pushing out a new system update for the console, bringing the firmware to version 4.20. The update will optimize performance as always, in addition to adding new functionality and features.

The headline part of the update is improved performance for the newly launched Wireless Stereo Headset. The version 4.20 update gives the peripheral “virtual surround sound” quality for playback of Blu-ray and DVD movies. It also improves sidetone audio performance with the ability to choose from five different microphone audio settings. Sidetone refers to when you hear your own voice during online gameplay.

The new PS3 update also adds new settings for automatically turning the system off when it Video/TV/Music/Photo mode, as well as Game/Other Features mode. Managing save files has also been enhanced with the ability to select multiple items and delete or copy en masse. Sony has been known to sneak other content – like anti-piracy measures – into firmware updates without announcing them, but the above is what the company has publicly disclosed.
