Huawei Ascend D2 official: 5-inch 1080p display, 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, Android Jelly Bean

Huawei Ascend D2 official 5inch 1080p display, 15GHz quadcore CPU, Android Jelly Bean

Huawei’s daring to dream big — at least, that’s what prior leaks regarding its latest Android lineup have seemed to indicate. And here at CES 2013, the company’s finally formally introduced the Ascend D2, referred to by company Chairman Richard Yu as the “dream phone.” Its top shelf specs — 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core 1.5GHz K3V3 CPU, Android Jelly Bean, 13-megapixel rear camera and 3,000mAh battery — certainly merit that distinction, but as pie in the sky smartphone ambitions go, its 6.1-inch stablemate, the Ascend Mate, takes the cake.

The Ascend 2 has a 443 ppi 5-inch display panel which is 1,080 x 1,920. As for the camera, the 13-megapixel shooter has an f/2.2 aperture, a 5P lens and a hybrid IR filter. Audio-wise, super hands free will allow you to talk to the device (and hear the conversation) up to 2 meters away. It has a whopping 3,000 mAH battery in it, and is both dustproof and waterproof.

NVIDIA Tegra 4 revealed with 72 GPU cores and 4G LTE

This week at CES 2013 the CEO of NVIDIA, Jen-Hsung Huang, revealed the next industry-leading processor by NVIDIA’s clock, that being the Tegra 4. This processor works with 72 GPU cores, 4 A15 CPU cores, and the ability to work with 4G LTE. The first test this processor was put to live on stage was between itself in an unnamed tablet and the Google Nexus 10 – loading webpages on the Tegra 4 (imagine that) finished much, much quicker than the Nexus 10.

P1050180

This processor loaded 25 unique, high traffic sites in 27 seconds while the Nexus 10 loaded the same in 50 seconds. That simple test means one thing, said Huang, is that if you’re loading a webpage with the NVIDIA Tegra 4, you’ll get it “in one second”, while when you’re working with the current most powerful tablet on the planet (the Nexus 10, so they say), you’ll get it “in two seconds.”

P1050181

In a comparison chart onstage, Huang showed the Tegra 4 as fastest, the iPad 4 as right behind it (though slightly slower, of course), the Nexus 10 coming in next, Droid DNA after that, and the Kindle Fire HD down at the bottom of the pack. Though we’ll be investigating these claims in the very near future, it’s fairly plain at the moment that NVIDIA’s architecture here is the most powerful solution for mobile devices on the planet.

Stay tuned as we continue to transmit all the details straight from CES 2013 through our massive CES portal all week long!

HTC M7 specifications leak with hint of new Sense

This week one of the biggest points of interest in the leaked or otherwise tipped or rumored smartphone department has been the HTC M7, and today we’ve got a batch of new details for you straight from the anonymous barn. This machine is set to be working with an “all black design”, it’s being said today by a source speaking with HTC Source, and will be coming with a new version of HTC Sense that’s both clean and simple – not generally what Sense is all about (so to speak). This device will still not likely be appearing until at least after next week as next week is CES 2013, but you never know!

htc-580x435

This machine is being tipped as having a lovely 4.7-inch 1080p display, a fabulous Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked in at 1.7GHz, and a 13 megapixel camera on the back. The big deal with this phone is not that it’s got the most gigantic display nor the most powerful processor though, but that it may be coming without capacitive buttons under the display. This would put it in with the rumors for a similar device coming from Samsung this year in the Galaxy S IV.

At the moment, HTC is still working with their HTC One family of devices, a lower-powered HTC One device appearing just today on Cricket Wireless. The M7 is set to work with 2GB of RAM and a set of specifications inside and out that would suggest that it’s set for the top of the heap, on the other hand, and very possibly headed to more than one carrier all at once.

Stick around SlashGear to see exactly what this new device is going to bring to the HTC family of devices for Android in our HTC tag, and don’t for get CES and MWC! Hit the CES 2013 tag portal first to follow SlashGear first, starting Sunday (or today if you like), then hit up the MWC 2013 tag right afterward to follow us to Barcelona!

NVIDIA TegraZone hits Windows RT: beastly tablet gaming at your fingertips!

As it has been for many moons with the Tegra-enhanced Android universe, so too does Windows RT get the NVIDIA TegraZone treatment: a listing of games made great for your Tegra processor-toting tablet! This listing of games opens in an extremely simplified display with touch-friendly pushing and pulling in mind. What you’re getting here is a guide to games that will work fabulously on your device that’s working with both Windows RT (that Windows 8 operating system made for your tablet specifically) and an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor under the hood – like the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT, for example – hot stuff!

windowsrt

The NVIDIA TegraZone being available for Windows RT means that NVIDIA will be pushing developers to their limits with a cross-promotional bit of excellence on all Tegra 3-toting devices. If you’ve got a Windows RT tablet with Tegra 3 (regardless of manufacturer), you’ll have a precise collection of games ready and waiting for you to peruse that you’ll know were made with your device in mind. In many cases, this means that the game has features above and beyond what it’d have working with any other processor-toting device.

tegrazone_screen_embed

Here at the launch of the NVIDIA TegraZone for Windows RT, you’ve got a selection of the following awesome collection of games: Judge Dredd vs Zombies, Pinball FX 2, Reckless Racing Ultimate, Riptide GP, Soulcraft, Space Ark, Sprinkle and Vendetta Online. Each of these games is offered for sale in the Windows Store but through the TegraZone is detailed with Tegra-only enhanced features. These features include enhanced physics in water, smoke, and cloth, dynamic lighting and particle effects – and more!

As it was with the original NVIDIA TegraZone, this version of the interface is made for the current most fabulous Tegra processor, but will keep up-to-date with the best of the best in the future. That means here that while the Tegra 3 quad-core processor is king (and has been throughout 2012), we’ll likely see a new beast from the NVIDIA crew for mobile devices in 2013 – currently code-named Wayne, as it were. Keep an eye out! Once that processor is out, developers working with NVIDIA will still be busting out the best of the best, so the TegraZone is up on the greatest no matter when you see it!

The most important part of this whole equation is the relationship that the folks at NVIDIA have with the developers behind these hard-hitting games, and the amazing apps they create as a result of said relationships for you, the user. You can download the TegraZone app from the Windows Store right this minute – have at it!

Also have a peek at the TegraZone path that’s been forged on SlashGear in a small sampling from Slashgear in the timeline below for Android – and hit our own NVIDIA [Tegra Portal] to take in the full NVIDIA Tegra environment, top to bottom!

Nubia Z5 unveiled in China with quad-core chip, 5-inch 1080p display and 7.6mm thickness

Nubia Z5 unveiled as the world's thinnest 5inch 1080p phone, available in January

Much like many Chinese smartphone brands these days, ZTE sub-brand Nubia had prematurely given away the main selling points of its Z5 ahead of its Beijing launch today, but there were still some surprises. As you probably already know, here’s yet another five-inch 1080p Android phone featuring Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064, 2GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with a 13-megapixel F2.2 main camera (with five-element optics by Konica Minolta, plus separate touch focus and touch exposure in the app) and a two-megapixel front-facing camera. For multimedia consumption, the Z5 supports WiFi Display and MHL output should you wish to beam content to a larger screen; whereas on the audio side you are spoiled with either Yamaha or Dolby Digital Plus. But wait, there’s more!

Oppo Find 5 to hit more international markets in Q1 2013, adds a $569 32GB model

Oppo's Find 5 to hit several international markets in Q1 2013, adds a $569 32GB model

Ho ho ho! Even on this special day, the folks at Oppo decided to drop a bomb on its “Ofans.” According to a fresh teaser on its Facebook page, not only will Oppo be offering the $499 16GB version of the quad-core, five-inch 1080p Find 5 in the US (as we already knew), but there’ll also be a 32GB flavor for $569. What’s more, the image also lists many additional countries: Canada, UK, Spain, Australia, Germany, France, Belgium, Malaysia, Sweden, Singapore, Finland, Greece, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Japan and Hong Kong. Just to be sure, we reached out to Oppo and were told that it’s aiming to hit all these markets within Q1 next year; and better yet, it’ll try to do that as close to the early-January China launch as possible. Sounds like the company’s pushing for a global online retail channel (the blurred out URL probably indicates that it’ll be a centralized website), and it’ll be interesting to compare its performance to Xiaomi’s more humble attempt closer to home.

Update: We’ve been told that this is only a partial list, so fret not if your country isn’t there.

Huawei’s 6.1-inch 1080p Ascend Mate flaunted by exec, leaves little surprise for CES

Huawei's 61inch 1080p Ascend Mate flaunted by exec, leaves little surprise for CES

How big is too big? Well, that’s clearly not Huawei’s concern, as it’s about to introduce a 6.1-inch 1080p Android phone at CES. But even two weeks (before the company’s CES press day) is too much for the impatient Richard Yu, who went ahead and whipped out his beastly device in front of fans at a Huawei store in Guangzhou yesterday — there’s a video of the intimate moment after the break. According to earlier rumors, the Ascend Mate will feature a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core chip, along with a massive 4,000mAh battery, 9.9mm thickness and a price tag of just under ¥3,000 (about $480). Yu wrote on Sina Weibo saying the final specs may differ slightly, but the 43-year-old executive did add that the 361ppi display is of LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) nature. As with the Ascend W1 and the Ascend D2, all will be unveiled at CES.

Oppo Find 5 spec sheet pops up, heading to US for $499 unsubsidized

Oppo Find 5 spec sheet listed for $499 unsubsidized

Quad-core APQ8064 chip: check. 5-inch 1080p display: check. That’s right, it’s the Oppo Find 5 again, but this time we’re seeing the phone’s full spec sheet courtesy of the manufacturer’s overly simple US website — we’ve already verified this with our contacts. Apart from the fact that Oppo will be selling the much anticipated Find 5 in the US, the product page also lists an unsubsidized price of just $499, which isn’t bad when you look at the $600 HTC Droid DNA off contract. The specs also mention Android 4.1.2, a 2,500mAh battery, NFC, 16GB of built-in storage and 2GB of RAM, as well as compatibility with T-Mobile and AT&T’s 3G networks. Now all we need are some pictures, but we’ll even get to touch it at the Beijing launch event next Wednesday.

Qualcomm adds two new China-bound SoCs to its Snapdragon S4 lineup

Qualcomm adds two new Chinabound SoCs to its Snapdragon S4 lineup

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chips are flying off the shelves so fast these days that the company’s had to enlist other manufacturing companies just to keep up with the demand. That’s not keeping the San Diego-based firm from further expanding its entry-level quad-core lineup, however, as Qualcomm just unveiled the MSM8226 and MSM8626 CPUs.

Each features an Adreno 305 GPU capable of 1080p video recording and playback and support for up to 13-megapixel shooters. The 28nm silicon also packs dual SIM support, multi-modal radios tuned to Chinese TD-SCDMA, CDMA and HSPA+ networks and has GPS, GLONASS and Beidou on board as well. Aside from the broad frequency coverage, the new radio promises 40 percent power savings and is 60 percent smaller than Qualcomm’s older comparable wireless transceivers. Want to know more? PR awaits after the break.

Toshiba Excite 10 SE brings 10-inches of Tegra 3 for $350

The folks at Toshiba have come on strong with a new contender in the 10-inch tablet space this week with the Toshiba Excite 10 SE, complete with an AutoBrite HD screen at 1280 x 800 pixels and stereo speaker action. This machine closely resembles Toshiba’s past tablet-sized offerings and comes with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 16GB of internal storage – as well as a microSD card slot.

This machine works with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a Toshiba user interface over the top as well as two cameras, one on the front for video chat, the other on the back for snapping some lovely photos and HD video. Of course they won’t be the best photos in the world at 3 megapixels strong, but you never know – auto-focus included!

This machine is just 0.4 inches thick and weighs in at 22.6 ounces, coming with a standard microUSB connection for data transfer as well as charging with Toshiba’s own wall adapter. This machine will be popping up with Wi-fi connectivity as well as Bluetooth 3.0, and will be bringing on SRS Premium Voice Pro technology for your dual speakers. These speakers sit on the bottom of the tablet, mind you: great for flat table-users, but not ideal for those of you working with your lap exclusively.

The Toshiba Excite 10 SE will be available starting at $349.99 MSRP beginning on the 6th of December. This machine will be available at select retailers and through Toshiba’s own ToshibaDirect web store right off the bat, and should be a generous competitor for those looking for that perfect slightly less-than-expensive 10-inch Android tablet this holiday season.
