QuakeCon 2014 Kicks Off This July 17

QuakeCon 2014 Kicks Off This July 17Ah, Quake. I clearly remember how that game actually introduced me to the entire world of binding keys to various weapons from the drop down console itself. It has opened up my eyes to the effectiveness of a rocket jump, not to mention making me a math monkey as I had to make the armor runs between the red and the green in DM6 – The Dark Zone so that the opponent would not be able to stand much of a chance. My other favorite map was The Bad Place (DM4), and I loathed the slow weapon change speed in Quake 2 and Quake 3, relatively speaking, of course. Then there was QuakeCon as well, which has certainly evolved over the years. In this day and age, QuakeCon happens to be Bethesda and id Software’s public event which has been dated – where it will happen at the end of July, from Thursday, July 17 all the way to Sunday, July 20.

John Carmack says Armadillo Aerospace is in ‘hibernation’ following setbacks

John Carmack says Armadillo Aerospace is in 'hibernation'

Armadillo Aerospace was once at the forefront of efforts to foster private spaceflight, but it has been quiet ever since its STIG-B rocket crashed in January. We’re now learning why: founder John Carmack has revealed that the company is now in “hibernation.” The transition from contract work to vehicle building just didn’t pan out, he says. Having more full-time staff backfired, as workers were bogged down in planning and reviews; the team also repeated many of NASA’s mistakes in material choices, limiting its production capacity. As Carmack isn’t prepared to invest more of his personal funds to keep Armadillo going, the firm will likely remain on ice until there’s a new investor who’s ready to pay to keep up with Branson and Musk in the space race.

    AT&T to sponsor QuakeCon 2012

QuakeCon 2011QuakeCon is less than a month away, and some additional details about the event have been announced. According to a press release this morning – it looks like AT&T will be back this year to sponsor its network for the event’s attendees. While I wasn’t there last year, QuakeCon 2011 was said to have “faster-than-ever streaming and networked gameplay thanks to AT&T” so I guess they can’t go wrong by working with them again.

For those of you not in the know, QuakeCon is an annual Bring-Your-Own-Computer (BYOC) LAN Party and gaming festival held in Dallas, Texas. Attendees to QuakeCon can bring their own computers to participate in tournaments or just attend to check out new hardware, software, and clothing from companies involved with id Software. While tickets for BYOC have sold out, you can still attend the event with a general attendance ticket (which happens to be free). Head over to the QuakeCon website for more details. Any of our readers attending the event this year?
