Snapdragon S4 greatness touted for Windows RT tablets from Samsung and Dell

It would appear that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor line is making the rounds this year at IFA 2012, today appearing in both Samsung and Dell’s Windows RT tablets. The first of these is the Samsung ATIV Tab 10-inch tablet (check out our hands-on experience) with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and an 8.9mm thin body. Then there’s the Dell XPS 10 which we got eyes-on time with this week as well – complete with 10-inch multi-touch display and keyboard dock for converting the device into a notebook.

With the Samsung ATIV Tab you’re getting a 570 gram tablet with USB 2.0, microHDMI out, a microSD card slot that can hold up to 64GB cards, and both front and rear cameras. The rear-facing camera is 5 megapixels strong while the front-facing camera comes in at 1.9 megapixels. You’ve also got Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11n WiFi Direct, NFC, and GPS under the hood. Qualcomm notes specifically that the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor in this device will allow you to play 1080p videos “while lasting all-day on a single battery charge.” Sounds like a win!

The Dell XPS 10 is the manufacturer’s first Windows RT tablet, complete with the premium computing promise that comes with the whole XPS line. This device has a 10-inch display that, just like the ATIV Tab, is fully touch sensitive, and has lovely “enhanced” viewing angles. This device presents a high-quality experience on its own, but has double the battery time and one whole heck of a lot more typing potential with its QWERTY keyboard dock attached.

Qualcomm notes specifically for the Dell XPS 10 that especially when you’ve got the device’s keyboard dock attached with extra battery power, the Snapdragon S4 processor inside will provide you with all-day action without a charge due to fabulous power management. The Snapdragon S4 processor is working with Windows RT here to provide a full day’s battery time in many devices with days of standby without a charge – just what you’ve always wanted in a Windows tablet machine!

Qualcomm brings S4 power to Samsung ATIV Tab and S

Just in case you didn’t catch it in the whirlwind of announcements that were laid down today at IFA 2012 by Samsung, Qualcomm has announced that their ultra-powerful Snapdragon S4 processor lineup will be bringing the heat to the ATIV S smartphone and ATIV Tab tablet. The ATIV Tab tablet running Windows RT while the ATIV S is set to be one of the very first Windows Phone 8 devices to hit the market this Fall. The Qualcomm team’s Snapdragon lineup also remains the only set of processor to power Windows Phone, 100% of them, the whole world over.

With the Qualcomm Snapdragon line of processor, it’s assured by the manufacturer that the user is getting “seamless integration and collaboration between hardware, software, and services.” This is of course because Qualcomm manufactures other gear inside the devices they have their processors in as well, and offer software solutions for sharing and media wizardry of all kinds. LG’s Smart TV alliance grows, promises first cross-platform HDTV apps in September

LG's Smart TV alliance grows, promises first crossplatform HDTV apps in September

The Smart TV Alliance consisting of LG and TP Vision (Philips) is still hammering away at its dream of platform-independent Smart TV apps, and as IFA 2012 gets under way it has a few new announcements. After promising Japanese manufacturers would join back in June it has welcomed Toshiba to the fold, as well as other supporters like Qaulcomm, Mstar, Onigo and YuMe. At IFA 2012, LG is showing off the first apps built to the original SDK 1.0 spec built by Accuweather, Eurosport, online music channel Vilanoise and others. It’s not stopping there however, as the SDK 2.0 we’d heard about is still due before 2012 is out, and has been built to take advantage of the new more powerful SoCs that companies like Qualcomm (the S4 family) and Mstar can provide to HDTV manufacturers.

LG Optimus G official with in-cell touch

The device you’re about to have a peek at goes by the name LG Optimus G and it’s about to bring on next-level hardware the likes of which you’ve never seen before. The LG Optimus G has been made official by LG this week, here showing its full specifications for one whole heck of a lot of smartphone glory. You’ll be working with the ultra-powerful 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064, 4G LTE connectivity, and LG’s futuristic application of their fully integrated touch technology that goes by the name of in-cell touch.

This technology called in-cell touch has also been tipped as being prepared for use in the iPhone 5 (or New iPhone, whatever you like), as it’s revealed some time next month (if the rumors are true, of course.) The CEO of LG let the world know last week that they were ready and willing to make their ability to create said technology in real hardware form public knowledge, and here with the LG Optimus G, it appears that the first implementation of the innovation has been revealed as well.

This device features a True HD (1280 x 768 pixel resolution) IPS+ LCD, a display which LG says is able to head right up to the edge of the 3mm bezel – fun stuff! On the back of the device you’ll find a massive 13 megapixel camera, on the front you’ve got a 1.3 megapixel camera, and inside you’ve got 2GB of RAM – that’s power! Paired with the quad-core Snapdragon processor inside, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S III will have some benchmark competition.

The LG Optimus G will be appearing on NTT Docomo in Japan as the L-01E in October or November, while a more standard Korea release will be happening next week. This device will measure in at 8.45mm thin – considering that this is thin already, even without considering the 2,100 mAh battery inside – the LG crew may have a pretty awesome device on their hands. This smartphone will also be released with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box.

LG Optimus G revealed: 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, ICS, LTE, 4.7-inch screen with in-cell touch

LG Optimus G revealed 15GHz quadcore CPU, ICS, LTE, 47inch screen with incell touch

LG has been teasing its upcoming Optimus G smartphone for weeks after promising LTE phones that would be “second to none” and now we finally have the full specs. When it arrives in Korea next month it will be the first with LTE mounted to a quad-core CPU, thanks to the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 at its center. The display is also groundbreaking, featuring LG’s fully integrated touch technology — sounds like its new in-cell touch to us –for a thinner screen and bezel. It’s a True HD (1280 x 768) IPS LCD, and LG claims when it’s turned off the 3mm bezel and body of the phone match the screen when it’s turned off. Just the leaks indicated, it also has 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera and 2,100mAh battery, all while measuring only 8mm thick.

The only bad news so far? It will arrive in Korea next month (and on NTT Docomo in October or November as the L-01E in black and red, seen after the break) with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, not Jelly Bean. The software will be as we’ve seen on other high-powered LG units like the Optimus Vu, with the addition of a “live zoom” feature on video and Dual Screen Dual Play mirroring for external displays. The real triumph for LG however, is its ability to vertically integrate technology from its various units to create the device. LG Chem provided a battery that is the first to offer a lifespan of 800 cycles, while LG Display created the screen and partnered with LG Innotek on the G2 Touch Hybrid Display unibody tech that eliminates the gap between the glass and the LCD panel. A worldwide launch is promised later in the year, although we’d expect to hear more soon at IFA 2012.

Update: The English PR is now available and embedded after the break. Check it out for the full specs, including the Optimus G’s Adreno 320 GPU, Bluetooth 4.0, MHL and NFC capabilities and more software enhancements including Time Catch Shot picture selection and Cheese Shutter voice command to take a picture.

Engadget Giveaway: win a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dev tablet!

Engadget Giveaway win a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Development Tablet!

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Mobile Development Platform (MDP) tablet is not your typical Android-based slate — it’s a developer’s best friend. This particular MDP houses a quad-core Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 chip, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB LPDDR2 RAM, and its primary purpose for even existing is to help devs test their games and apps on a true-blue device before OEM products begin hitting the market later this year. It’s the most impressive quad-core tablet (in terms of performance) we’ve ever played with, but at $1,299 a pop, it isn’t cheap. But that’s where you, dear reader, come in: the slate you see above is going to be handed out to a lucky winner, and all you have to do is leave a comment in the usual place. Don’t forget to read the rules below, and best of luck!

LG teases Qualcomm S4 quad-core smartphone in video chat

For the second time this week we’re now seeing LG and Qualcomm come together to bring on a teaser for their upcoming collaboration in smartphone form. This time around it’s LG that’s up front with a relatively brief video presented on the possibilities for this upcoming unnamed device that will indeed by toting Qualcomm’s next-generation processor. This chipset will be an iteration of the Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor we got the opportunity to take a peek at last month in benchmark form.

Qualcomm’s current best on the market chipset is the Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor. This bit of architecture is rather impressive in both processing power and in its ability to preserve battery life with power saving functions galore. This processor also has a dedicated bit of architecture made specifically for image processing so no matter which device it’s on, great photos can potentially be taken.

We’ve seen the S4 dual-core do wonderful things on the HTC One X and One S as well as the whole Samsung Galaxy S III lineup in the USA. Have a peek at the video above to see how LG will be working with Qualcomm to bring on the generation of the future with not two, but FOUR powerful CPU cores in one fabulous smartphone. This device will also feature Qualcomm’s Adreno 320 in the graphics department, and will have the ability to work with LTE as well.

Have a peek in our S4 Pro timeline below to see other recent encounters we’ve had with the system on chip over the past few weeks. LG will be the first exclusive manufacturer using this processor – after that we may very well see other groups join in on the party!

LG teases its new quadcore superphone Snapdragon S4 Pro is awesome, device still vague

While Qualcomm let the Snapdragon out of the bag a little early, LG’s now caught up and launched a (Korean-only) teaser site for its next LTE smartphone. Promising a second-generation quad-core experience, the new flagship device will offer better power management and graphics performance thanks to the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset beating away at its core. There’s space on the site for another five videos, which should hopefully give us a little more detail than what we’ve been able to glean from FCC filings. Thumb your Korean dictionary ready and check out LG’s first taster after the break.
