Microsoft Confirms R2 Studios Acquisition

microsoft Microsoft Confirms R2 Studios AcquisitionIt is now official. Microsoft has just acquired R2 Studios. It was just last week when we wrote to you about the rumor surrounding Microsoft’s acquisition of R2 Studios. Insider sources told the Wall Street Journal that Microsoft bought the home-entertainment technology startup to beef up its Xbox unit, but the report was never officially confirmed. Via press release, Microsoft also announced that it has appointed R2 Studios founder Blake Krikorian as the Corporate Vice President for the company’s Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB).

Microsoft acquires home automation startup R2 Studios to bolster Xbox division

Details are expectedly light on this one, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft has acquired R2 Studios, a startup focused on home entertainment and home automation founded by Blake Krikorian (best known as the co-founder and former CEO of Sling). According to the WSJ, Krikorian and a “small team” will be joining Microsoft, with the company’s Xbox division apparently the main focus of the deal. The news also follows reported acquisition talks R2 has had with both Apple and Google, although Microsoft’s winning bid hasn’t been revealed — it does unsurprisingly include some patents, though. For its part, Microsoft is staying mum on the deal, although R2’s current focus (including a home control app for Android) would seem to be a natural fit for Microsoft’s SmartGlass efforts.

Microsoft Wins Out Over Apple And Google, Acquires Home Entertainment And Automation Company R2 Studios

Late last year, it was reported that Microsoft, Apple and Google were all speaking to id8 Group R2 Studios Inc. about a potential acquisition of the startup, and now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft has indeed sealed the deal. R2 is a home automation and entertainment media startup, founded by Blake Krikorian, former founder of Sling Media. Microsoft hopes to use the startup’s resources, tech and personnel to enhance its Xbox division.

R2 released a product called R2 Control for Crestron that allows it to control home automation systems, managing audio visual and home theatre equipment, lighting, thermostats, security and other connected home devices on Android phones and tablets both at home and remotely. The group holds patents for controlling electronic devices as well as providing the control app for Android, which will be acquired by Microsoft. Krikorian and “a small team” will join Microsoft as employees as part of the deal.

Microsoft could just be buying the company to extend its existing plans to make the Xbox the hub of the family entertainment center, but as I suggested in a previous post, the opportunity is there for Redmond to now build connected home control directly into their software platforms. Software that can control home automation and remote triggering of in-home events, built into Windows on mobile, desktop and into Xbox, could go a long way toward extending the paradigm of the constantly connected mobile consumer. I suspect the Internet of things will be a strong theme at next week’s CES, and I think this is a good sign that the big players are starting to mobilize to make sure this is a space they can claim ownership of, too.

Microsoft Acquires R2 Studios (Rumor)

r2 studios Microsoft Acquires R2 Studios (Rumor)There are whispers going around that Microsoft is looking to lighten their pockets somewhat with another purchase which will play a role in their future plans for the Xbox brand. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources, that Microsoft has already picked up Id8 Group R2 Studios. R2 Studios was originally founded by Blake Krikorian in May a couple of years ago, and he also founded Sling Media, the company behind the Slingbox TV streaming device. Apparently, Krikorian as the rest of his tight startup team will join up with Microsoft’s Xbox unit, where this deal will also tie up a bunch of patents that are under the possession of R2 Studios, in addition to specific financial terms which remained a secret.

It must be noted that Microsoft is not the only bigwig chasing after R2 Studios’ skirt, as Google and Apple were also said to have shown interest in picking up this outfit, and cash for all three companies involved is not an issue, so it really boils down to who R2 Studios is comfortable with, as well as the future direction which they will take. Just how do you think Microsoft will leverage all of R2 Studios should this bit of news become official?
