Fujitsu To Expand Raku Raku’s Availability n Europe

Fujitsu To Expand Raku Rakus Availability n EuropeBack in 2012, Fujitsu revealed a device in Japan called the Raku Raku, which was essentially a smartphone targeted towards the elderly. Given that most phones these days seem to focus more on crisp displays and sharp images, we guess in the process we forget that there are older folks who use smartphones too whose eyesight might not be what it used to be. Fujitsu attempted to expand outside of Japan with the Raku Raku smartphone and launched in France and apparently the device was quite a hit amongst the senior crowd of French carrier, Orange, to the point where Fujitsu has recently announced their plans to expand the availability of the Raku Raku smartphone to more parts of Europe.

According to Fujitsu’s chief executive, Masami Yamamoto, there were additional carriers in Europe who had approached the company after learning about the phone’s success on Orange. “We started off by offering it on a limited basis to French customers (in June), but orders have been so strong we have started to expand nationwide. The next step would be across Europe and of course we want to sell it worldwide.”

While Fujitsu making a loss as far as their mobile phones are concerned, the company has its feet planted and are looking more at the long-term, where Yamamoto thinks that there is a chance that companies such as Apple and Samsung could become irrelevant, and where Fujitsu would then be able to take over.

NTT DoCoMo outs Raku-Raku F-09E smartphone for ‘beginners’

NTT DoCoMo outs Raku-Raku F-09E smartphone for 'beginners'

It’s been more than a year since NTT DoCoMo unveiled its F-12D Raku-Raku handset, so it’s only natural the company would follow up with a successor in 2013. The Japanese firm just introduced the F-09E, an easy-to-use, Android-based device tailored for folks looking to get their feet wet on the smartphone craze. Hardware-wise, this Fujitsu-made, 4.3-inch (qHD) F12-D will be running Android 4.2.2, while a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600, 2GB RAM, 16GB of built-in storage and a 2,100mAh battery round out the spec list. Don’t get too attached to what’s under the hood, though: NTT DoCoMo notes the new member of the Raku-Raku family is still in development and things could change by the time it launches, sometime in “between late September and early October.”

NTT DoCoMo trials Tap-de-Concier service with a Google Now flair

NTT DoCoMo trials TapdeConcier app with a distinct Google Now vibe

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo isn’t content waiting for Google Now to become commonplace before it gives customers a taste of predictive search. The carrier is near launching a trial for Tap-de-Concier, an Android-based service that will pop up maps, media, games and more depending on both the user’s own habits, as well as usage and trends from DoCoMo’s other portals. The result is a service that theoretically knows what you want, when you want it: Tap-de-Concier can tell that you’re looking for train schedules before work on a Monday morning, and restaurants on Friday night. We imagine that some will like the alternative just because it won’t be confined to Jelly Bean — any DoCoMo-offered phone or tablet with at least Android 2.3 can run the service, including Raku-Raku phones. Locals will have between March 26th and September 30th to decide whether or not Tap-de-Concier is more helpful than its Google parallel.

Fujitsu’s Raku Raku Senior Friendly Smartphone To Go On Sale In US And Europe

raku raku Fujitsus Raku Raku Senior Friendly Smartphone To Go On Sale In US And EuropeEarlier this year we reported that Fujitsu had a smartphone designed for the elderly called the Raku Raku. The device was initially limited to the Japanese market, but the good news is that if you were hoping for a similar device to give to your parents or grandparents, you might be interested to learn that Fujitsu has plans to launch the Raku Raku phone in the US and Europe come 2013. Fujitsu is hoping that by expanding overseas, they will be able to ship more phones and are estimating about 10 million devices shipped in 2014. Given that Panasonic had such lofty goals themselves which did not work out, we certainly hope that Fujitsu will fare better.

For those curious, the Raku Raku is an Android-based smartphone that runs a modified version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What makes this more senior citizen-friendly is that it has been modified to feature larger icons and text, while displaying less apps on the home screen in order to lessen any confusion. It will feature basic apps such as the dialer, phone book, email and weather forecast. It is also expected to come with added features like noise cancellation and can even slow down the voice of the caller so that they can be understood better. No word on whether all these features will be available for the international version, or how much it will cost or when it will be available, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled nonetheless.
