Raspberry Pi Mini Computer Now Shipping With RAM Upgraded To 512MB (From 256MB); Same Tiny $35 Price-Tag

The Raspberry Pi mini computer just got a RAM upgrade – from 256MB to 512MB — but the $35 price-tag is staying the same. Eben Upton, chip design and founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, said the extra RAM follows frequent suggestions for a more expensive version of the Pi with more RAM for those who want to use the Pi for general computing purposes. But Upton notes the Foundation is “very attached to $35 as our highest price point” — in a recent interview with TC, Upton described price as “our differentiator”.

“There were a lot of boards like Raspberry Pi in the $200 range but not a lot in the $25 to $35 range,” he told me. “You’ve got to see [price] as our differentiator. The big impressive thing we’ve done, as far as I’m concerned, is to make this stuff cheap and available – we’re not making anything that didn’t exist before, but we’re making a thing that previously was very expensive [affordable].”

Upton also said the Foundation is starting to see interest in the Pi from developing countries for use as a general purpose computing device — noting: “[It’s] got an enormous amount of potential to really go and democratise access to information technology in places where maybe people have just bought their first television – emerging middle class in Africa — this is a little additional expense which will connect to your television and help you get more value out of that investment.”

Originally, the Foundation had set out with the idea to build a device for kids to learn to code — thinking they might be able to sell a thousand in the first year. In the event, they sold 100,000 on the first day of sale — and the market for the Pi has been much broader than they initially envisaged. Oracle has demoed Java SE embedded running on a Pi, for instance.

Writing in a blog on the Foundation’s website to announce the RAM upgrade, Upton said from today all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB of RAM as standard (Model A refers to a forthcoming $25 version of the Pi that does not include Ethernet).

One of the most common suggestions we’ve heard since launch is that we should produce a more expensive “Model C” version of Raspberry Pi with extra RAM. This would be useful for people who want to use the Pi as a general-purpose computer, with multiple large applications running concurrently, and would enable some interesting embedded use cases (particularly using Java) which are slightly too heavyweight to fit comfortably in 256MB.

The downside of this suggestion for us is that we’re very attached to $35 as our highest price point. With this in mind, we’re pleased to announce that from today all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB of RAM as standard. If you have an outstanding order with either distributor, you will receive the upgraded device in place of the 256MB version you ordered. Units should start arriving in customers’ hands today, and we will be making a firmware upgrade available in the next couple of days to enable access to the additional memory.

I’d like to thank our partners, RS Components and element14/Premier Farnell, and the suppliers, particularly Samsung, Sony and Broadcom, for all their help in delivering a smooth transition to the 512MB. I’m looking forward to seeing what you all get up to with your shiny new Pis.

First, we must congratulate the entire XBMC team on reaching the tenth anniversary of one of the project’s first betas hitting the internet, when Yet Another Media Play (YAMP) and Xbox Media Player joined forces to create something beautiful. It’s outlived the original console by far, powered other projects and spinoffs (Boxee, Plex, GeeXBox — just to name a few) and is still going strong. Just to show how much progress it’s making there’s a new monthly build that adds two features most will have to wait for XBMC 12 Frodo to try out. If you like to live on the edge, the September cycle includes mainline PVR support, which pulls in TV broadcasts thanks to PVR add-ons like MythTV or MediaPortal, as well as integrated support for the Raspberry Pi. Other tweaks include performance enhancements on Android, better picture zooming and rotation on mobiles and much, much more. Adafruit releases WebIDE alpha for Raspberry Pi, eases beginners into coding

If you’ve been intrigued by the Raspberry Pi but were hesitant to get one because you’re new to Linux, Adafruit has a solution for you. The team that brought us the Raspberry Pi Education Linux Distro has come up with a special WebIDE (Web Integrated Development Environment) designed to run on the affordable barebones computer. It’s entirely web-based so there’s no need to install any software — just launch a browser, hook up your Pi, and you’re ready to go. To make life easier for coders, the platform has a terminal built in, plus there’s an automatic updater included to keep folks running only the freshest version of WebIDE. It’s currently at the alpha stage, so only experienced users should install it for now, but Adafruit’s hoping to roll out a stable release suitable for programmers of all levels sometime soon.

Primarily based off of XBMC 11, the latest software bump for this long-running Linux distro introduces a few nifty features, such as: PVR support for DVB-T (watch and record live TV), full HD video for PandaBoard systems, full HD support for CuBox and improved HDD installation. A year in the making, GeeXbox 3.0 weighs in at a hefty 140MB, nearly double the size of the platform’s last official release. Giving a Raspberry Pi extra voltage is a quick way to squeeze out additional processing power and void its warranty, but the folks behind the tinker-friendly board have devised a turbo mode that boosts performance by roughly 50 percent while keeping warranties intact. After studying the effects of temperature and voltage on the hardware’s lifespan, the team found that dynamic overclocking and overvolting doesn’t affect the Pi’s health appreciably. As a result, speeds can be pushed from 700MHz to 1GHz only when additional horsepower is needed, and things are reined back in when the CPU grazes 185 degrees Fahrenheit (85 degrees Celsius). Benchmarks show the extra computing oomph makes the Pi 52 percent faster on integer, 64 percent speedier on floating point and 55 percent snappier on memory tasks. The new mode is available in the latest firmware update, which also includes temperature and frequency widgets, better analog audio, improved USB performance and support for WiFi dongles out of the box. Raspberry Pi squeezes 50% performance boost with turbo mode

Raspberry Pi has added a “turbo mode”, squeezing 50-percent more performance out of its fruity mini computer  without dinging your warranty in the process. Reminiscent of the old “Turbo” button on 90s PC cases, the green-light tweak can in fact be set to one of five different overclock presets, boosting the ARM processor to as high as 1GHz.

According to Raspberry Pi, overclocking was supported by the hardware at least from the outset, and was a simple matter of editing the config.txt file. However, the team was unsure whether it could have a negative impact on chipset life, and so decided to make it a warranty-buster.

After some more testing, however, and some clever automatic scaling which only allows turbo mode to function when the system is busy and, essentially, when temperature levels are sub-85-degrees centigrade, the official overclock has been produced. Raspberry Pi suggests testing with Quake 3 – something we know the $25 board is very capable of doing – to test out system stability.

Other system tweaks include WiFi support out of the box – though you’ll need to provide a USB WiFi adapter yourself – along with improved analog audio and better USB performance. New boards will come with the turbo mode option enabled; existing owners can upgrade with instructions here.

If you’re a computational engineer, there’s no question about what you do with the Raspberry Pi: you make a supercomputer cluster. Researchers at the University of Southampton have followed their instincts and built Iridis-Pi, a tiny 64-node cluster based on the Raspberry Pi’s usual Debian Wheezy distribution and linked through Ethernet. While no one would mistake any one Raspberry Pi for a powerhouse, the sheer number of networked devices gives the design both some computing grunt and 1TB worth of storage in SD cards. Going so small also leads to some truly uncommon rackmounting — team lead Simon Cox and his son James grouped the entire array in two towers of Lego, which likely makes it the most adorable compute cluster you’ll ever see. Crafting the exact system you see here costs under £2,500 ($4,026), or less than a grown-up supercomputer’s energy bill.

Intel has finalized the specs of its Next Unit of Computing (NUC) board, and announced it’ll go on sale in October for less than $400 with a case and power supply. Carrying a 4 x 4-inch form factor between a Raspberry Pi and mini-ITX board, it’ll be equipped with a Core i3 Ivy Bridge processor, HD 4000 graphics, two SoDIMM sockets, an mSATA slot for an SSD drive, three USB ports, one HDMI port and a mini-PCI slot for wireless connectivity. Two different models will be offered by the chip giant, identical except that one will be Thunderbolt equipped and the other will sport an Ethernet port for connectivity. Originally intended for the kiosk and signage markets, enthusiast interest compelled Intel to put the board on general sale, along with a case (pictured above) and power supply option. That’ll pit it against offerings from VIA and others, while offering considerably more oomph in a similar form factor — though a mini-server slaying Core i5 option originally proposed by Intel was dropped.
