Droid RAZR M and HD dev editions bring unlockable bootloaders to the Android party

Motorola just released three new consumer phones today, but the company didn’t want to leave developers out in the cold, so it also quietly rolled out a pair of developer handsets. A mere $550 gets you on the list right now for a RAZR M Developer Edition set to be shipped next week direct from Moto, and you can sign up for updates on the availability of a forthcoming RAZR HD dev-friendly handset, too. Each phone will bring an unlockable bootloader and the promise of immediate software gratification, though Motorola hasn’t set an availability date or price for the HD version just yet. You can get on the list for either device at the source links below.

Motorola Droid RAZR M hands-on (video)

Droid RAZR M handson

Motorola just took the wraps of the Droid RAZR M and, we’ve gotta say, the slender handset is quite the looker. The 8mm-thick body is plastic and Kevlar, just like its titular predecessor, but it adds some nice visual flourishes of its own, including rivets around the rim of the device. Despite its diminutive size, it has a nice heft in the hand, though we wouldn’t say it’s built like a tank. Overall, the device is frighteningly similar to the Droid RAZR, right down to the lock / power key with its concentric circle pattern. Also carried over from the OG Droid RAZR is the 4.3-inch screen. That means we are looking at a qHD Super AMOLED Advanced display, rather than some fancy HD panel and still saddled with a PenTile pixel layout. It also, as we harped on in the live blog, means that Android 4.0.4 has been slathered in Motorola’s own skin. Though, we’ll give credit to the new Google subsidiary for scaling back on the glitz and glam and letting Ice Cream Sandwich shine through a bit.

Motorola RAZR M official: 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.5GHz dual-core, hitting Verizon for $99 (update: currently $149)

Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE official 43inch qHD display, 15GHz dualcore, hitting Verizon for $99

Gosh, it feels like we’re written this post already, huh? That’s because we have. That handset you see up there is the Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE, which we’ve already seen in leaked photos. Well, Motorola just officially announced the phone and — surprise, surprise — there are no surprises. As we reported last week, the device has a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced display coated in Gorilla Glass. (The rear side is fashioned out of the same Kevlar you’ll find on the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx.) As you can see, the phone has nearly edge-to-edge glass with narrow bezels, which brings us to one of the phone’s key selling points: it offers a good deal of screen real estate for a phone with such petite dimensions.

Under the hood it packs a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. The handset also boasts an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of recording 1080p video, a 0.3-megapixel front-facing shooter, GSM / UMTS / HSPA+ global roaming and 8GB of internal storage, along with a microSD slot. Additionally, the phone has an NFC radio and will ship with Android 4.0. And while the other two Moto phones announced today are coming this holiday season, this guy is landing on Verizon Wireless next week for $99, though it’s up for pre-order today.

Update: Despite Verizon’s own insistence, the Droid RAZR M is currently listed on the carrier’s online store for $149 with a two-year contract, where it states that pre-orders will ship on September 12th. Perhaps Big Red got a touch greedy at the eleventh hour? [Thanks, Uto]

Motorola RAZR M and RAZR HD renders spotted ahead of Motorola event

In just a couple of hours’ time, we will see just what Motorola has in store for the masses, and whether they are able to steal away Nokia’s thunder from this morning. What you see above was spotted on EvLeaks (the same folks who brought us leaked images of the wireless charging pad for the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 smartphones), where it shows off press renders of the Motorola RAZR M and RAZR HD – where both of them feature Verizon’s DROID boot animation as well.

What you see on the left is most probably the mid-range Motorola RAZR M (which we have already seen a video of from Engadget), while the slightly darker phone on the right hand side ought to take up the mantle of the Motorola RAZR HD, 720p display and all. Additional details of either handsets will most probably be revealed in due time later this morning (or afternoon, depending on the time zone you’re in), so don’t go anywhere just yet. We will continue to bring you gadget news in between as fillers.

Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE spotted in white trim

Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE spotted in white

We’ve had the chance to take a good, hard look at the Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE (aka XT907) bathed in the standard black color option, but what about the rumored white hue? Wait no longer: we just got handed the above images showing the Kevlar-clad device complete with a bleached trim, a design choice that appears to follow closely after the original white Droid RAZR. It’s unfortunate, however, that Motorola and Verizon have chosen to continue this trend of merely changing the color of the phone’s edges and calling it a day. Does the new look change your overall opinion of the midrange smartphone? Feel free to sound off below.
