Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with LTE gets gussied up in Garnet Red

Samsung’s just pulled back the curtains on yet another device clad in a shade of Garnet Red: the Galaxy Note 10.1 with LTE. According to the electronics giant, it’s positioning the dark cardinal-colored tablet as perfect material for Valentine’s Day, and thinks the device will particularly strike the fancy of the fairer sex. Come February 14th, the freshly minted tablets will be available for three carriers in South Korea, while a rolling release is penciled in for other markets across the globe.

PS3 Slim Blue and Red Editions Heading to Japan This Month

The first Sony PS3 was a fat, glossy black fingerprint magnet and it was glorious. When my original PS3 finally died, I ended up buying when the new slimmer PS3′s with a matte black case. If you’ve been itching for a more colorful PS3 that is even thinner – and happen to live in Japan, you will get your wish this month.

A pair of impressively thin and sleek new PS3 consoles are headed to retail outlets in Japan this month in blue or red colors. Each of the consoles has an internal 250 GB hard drive and rather than calling them plain color names, the official colors are “azurite blue” and “garnet red.” Other than the fancy colors and thin profiles, these are still your basic PS3 consoles that have been around for a long time.

Either color PS3 super slim console will cost ¥24,980 – which working out to about $279(USD). The consoles will also ship with their own color matched DualShock controller. There’s no word on a launch for these colors outside of Japan as of yet.

This may be the last hurrah for the PS3, with rumors of a new PS4 console expected to launch later this year.

REDRAY Hands-On: A Giant Black Death Star Full of Beauty

The only problem with 4K TV, other than being too expensive for anyone who isn’t a Prince William, is that there’s no good way to get 4K stuff to watch. Right? RED is selling a super-HD streaming box that says otherwise. More »

Samsung Galaxy Note II purportedly reaching South Korea in brown and red

Samsung Galaxy Note II purportedly reaching South Korea in brown and red

Yes, the black Galaxy Note II may have been more wishful thinking than reality, but that doesn’t mean Samsung is sticking to a narrow palette for its extra-large flagship. A supposed magazine page in South Korea shows both a brown Note II (already available in Japan) and a previously unseen red model headed to the country at an unspecified point in the future. The claim sounds promising for those who’ve wanted more options than gray and white. All the same, we’ll remain skeptical unless the new colors are made official — Samsung hasn’t commented on the authenticity of the page, and the original Korean forum post has disappeared without a trace. We can’t help but hope it’s real, though, if just for the chance of another smartphone designed for vampires.

REDRAY 4K Cinema Player Puts Theater Quality Images in Your Media Room

While there are already a handful of displays on the market with 4K pixel resolution, they’re extremely expensive, and there’s very little content available for them. Now, RED Digital Cinema has announced a new video player capable of outputting 4K video without breaking the bank too badly.

redray 4k player 1

The REDRAY player can play native 4K (4096×2160) resolution video files. It can output these to either a single 4K display through an HDMI 1.4 connector, or to a grid of four monitors using four HDMI 1.3 connectors. It’s also capable of playback of 3D content, as well as high frame rate content at 48 or 60fps (like the new Hobbit movie.)

While the player is clearly designed primarily for commercial installations, you can certainly use it in your home theater if you’ve got a way to get 4K source material – like if you shoot some with a RED camera, and prep the files using REDCINE-X PRO.

You can also use the player to upscale standard H.264 HD content to 4K resolution as well. Inside, it’s got a 1TB SATA hard drive for storing up to 100 hours of 4k content, and can receive content via Internet download, SD card or USB flash media. Its audio capabilties aren’t too shabby either, and it supports up to 7.1 channel LPCM sources in 24-bit, 48Khz quality. It also offers wireless remote control via IR or 802.11n.

You can pre-order the REDRAY over at the RED store now for $1450(USD). RED expect to start shipping them in Q1 2013.

This Redray 4k Cinema Player Looks Like Something Out of Terminator

The much lusted after Redray, which looks like the blu ray player Terminator and Darth Vader would use, can now be pre-ordered for $1450 and will start shipping in December. That’s damn expensive but 4K! 4K! 4K! More »

Redray 4K Cinema Player is ready to pre-order: $1,450 for high-res, high framerate home viewing

Redray 4K Cinema Player is ready to preorder, $1,450 for highres, framerate at home

We got a peek at Red’s Redray 4K Cinema Player and Projector back in April at NAB, but now you can bring the player portion of it to your own home very soon. You’ll need to bring your own 4K Ultra HD display but for $1,450 you can pre-order a unit capable of native 4,096 × 2,160 or 3,840 x 2,160 video playback (in .RED file format) and upscaling. It connects to 4K displays via one HDMI 1.4 port or 4 HDMI 1.3 ports, with an additional HDMI jack needed to push 7.1 audio. It’s even ready for the new high framerate 3D video that we’ll see debut at theaters with The Hobbit. There’s no mention of the Red Laser Projector yet, so you’ll have to BYO 4K display, which right now would probably mean something by LG or Sony.

To get content home Red is also launching its nationwide fiber-based Odemax.com over-the-top distribution network. Red co-owner Jarred Land calls it the “only comprehensive distribution solution for 4K,” with built-in DRM, sales and analytics tools. He goes on to say that the Redray player will begin shipping at the end of December, with volume shipping promised in Q1 2013. A new RRencoder plugin for the Redcine-X viewer will launch in mid-December for converting external footage to the .RED format, and finally Odemax is scheduled to come online in January in time for the Sundance film festival. Check for more details after the break, plus a few more pics and a press release with all the specs.

Nintendo Wii Mini Official, Priced under $100, Release Date 12/7, Canada Only

Just moments ago, we published a post about the Nintendo Wii Mini being leaked by Best Buy Canada. I guess they only jumped the gun a little bit, since the console has now officially been posted up on Nintendo’s Canadian Website.

wii mini

The Wii Mini will sell for just $99.99 (CAD) (~$100 USD), and has a bold new look that I really like. The console comes in a small red and black box, and includes a matching red Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controller, as well as a plain white power brick, sensor bar and a composite video cable. Those who want an HD connection via HDMI or Component video will still have to buy that cable separately.

wii mini 3

It’s fully compatible with the over 1300 current Wii titles and existing accessories as well. Other than its (as yet unspecified) smaller size and cooler industrial design, it does away with one other aspect of the original – the Wii Mini has no internet connectivity, nor will it offer backwards compatibility with the Gamecube. That will certainly keep cost down, but will also reduce the potential revenues from online game purchases and DLC. I’m not sure how I feel about this move on Nintendo’s part.

But with the console going on sale on December 7th exclusively in Canada, it’s perfect timing for Nintendo to flood the market with a low-cost gaming system and get people excited about the Wii again – especially with the Wii U being priced at $300 to $350 – and already in short supply.

With its Canada-only release, I wouldn’t be surprised if you start seeing tons of these show up on eBay so those outside of the Great White North can enjoy a cheap Wii.
