The fakes just keep on coming. And frankly it’s hard to keep up with all the internet-fueled deception. Today we’re taking a look at a few more dubious images that you may have seen floating around the web recently. Punking Putin? Airplane selfies? Rocket to Uranus? Fake, fake, and definitely fake.
Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Oculus, has been known to show up on Reddit to respond to fans since the virtual reality’s Kickstarter first showed up two years ago. Yesterday, he took to Reddit again to reply to many angry fans about their concerns.
Sometimes things sound real but are completely fake. Those fake facts are just so convenient sounding and come perfectly wrapped in a bow tie that they spread like a disease. And then there are other facts that sound like complete made up bullshit but are actually real. Those are the scary ones. The shared souls over at Reddit gathered up some of the most ridiculous truthful facts together and they’re amazing.
Reddit’s great for many things: funny pictures, interesting factoids, revealing crowd-sourced interviews. Also, assault rifles. Mother Jones just published an unnerving investigation into the little known gun market tucked into the GunsForSale subreddit, and the numbers are disturbing.
90 million unique visitors a month has to be good for something. But so far Reddit hasn’t been able to stay consistently profitable even with all those people (yeah, you) banging down the door.
Reddit’s come a long way since it first appeared online in 2006—but how has it changed over time? This visualization shows how the relative sizes of its subreddits have changed.
What do you do when you’re rich beyond belief and with more money than you and your family could spend in several lifetimes? Start a charity? Fund research that improves the lives of those in poor living conditions? Play secret Santa with the folks at Reddit? Well if you said yes to all of the above, you’d pretty much be living out the life of Bill Gates, whom to one Reddit user’s delight, turned out to be her secret Santa! Going by Rachel and identifying herself in the Reddit community as NY1227, safe to say Rachel was shocked when she participated in this year’s Reddit online gift exchange and found out that her secret Santa was none other than Bill Gates himself.
In fact the photo above was posted by Gates as proof that it was indeed he who sent the gifts to Rachel, which included a stuffed cow and a National Geographic book. We guess he thought that she might think it was a prank and pre-empted it by providing the evidence. According to her account of the situation and how she felt when she realized who it was, “My god. Never in my entire life did I imagine, ever, ever, ever that Bill would get me. I am SO SO thankful for the time, thought and energy he put into my gift, and especially thankful for him over nighting it ”

I’m a pretty big fan of Reddit, and a lot of that is because of the awesome community behind it. Well, okay, it also has something to do with the hilarious images that are posted, but still, the community rocks. There’s been times I haven’t been able to check it for days (*gasp*), and when I jump back in I feel like I missed a bunch of good stories.
Thanks to Reddit Snapshot that is no longer a problem. Since mid-September 2010 it has been taking hourly snapshots of the Reddit homepage. To be honest I’ve been flipping through this archive, and I’ve been coming across a lot of stories/images I don’t remember seeing (particularly those back in September). It can provide hours of enjoyment for any Reddit fan.
I’m curious to see how long they end up keeping the archives around because at some point that top bar is going to get pretty cramped. Years from now it could be pretty fun to come back to this to see what was popular on Reddit at this time.
