What Is Reddit?

Anyone who has ever scrolled a page on a website or clicked a link on the Internet or watched a video on YouTube or enjoys the practicality of living with electricity should know what Reddit is. But could you explain it to someone who’s never heard of it? Is it the front page of the Internet as it claims? A chaotic community of circle jerkers that it can devolve into? Everything a newspaper should be? A wonderful time waster? Or somewhere in between all four? CGPGrey explains what Reddit exactly is. [CGPGrey]

This Equation Can Tell You How Successful a Reddit Post Will Be

Scientists love developing equations that can accurately predict real-life events—so when researchers from Stanford looked at Reddit, they naturally wondered if they could predict how successful posts would be. This equation is the result of their work.

Check out This Redditor’s Meme-rrific Proposal

It was a match made in heaven. So when the time was just right, Redditor SirTechnocracy put together a heart-wrenching proposal that made fellow Redditors and non-Redditors alike swoon.

Last Monday morning, he posted a link of a gallery to AdviceAnimals. He shared that his girlfriend, who goes by the handle LadyTechnocracy (see what he did there?), browses Reddit everyday, so it’s highly likely that she would come across his post at some point.

Meme Proposal

The entire proposal unfolds quite nicely in a series of memes, as you can see in the gallery below.

Meme Proposal3 300x250
Meme Proposal4 300x250

Meme Proposal9 300x250
Meme Proposal9a 300x250
Meme Proposal9b 300x250
Meme Proposal9c 300x250

The bottom of the meme gallery points to a link, which hosts another gallery of commissioned art that all depict one message: a proposal.

SirTechnocracy explained on Reddit: “It would be far more romantic to her than just taking her to a restaurant. Especially with all the pictures I commissioned for this (getting all those together took months and a couple thousand dollars).”

A few hours later, LadyTechnocracy apparently found the gallery. Hearing her excitement from the other room, SirTechnocracy entered the room, got down on one knee, and proposed to her in person.

Naturally, she upvoted him, and said “Yes.”

Reddit Alien Knight Statue Stops Reposters and Trolls Dead in His Path

If you follow Reddit with any regularity, you know their mascot is that little alien dude with the antenna sticking out of his head. Inspired by all of the traffic and support that Reddit has driven their way, the guys over at ThisIsWhyImBroke have made a very special life-size version of the mascot.

reddit alien knight statue

The statue was created by TomSpinaDesigns, and stands over 5-feet-tall. This particular Reddit Alien was modeled after the Knights of the /new, a group of Redditors who help separate the wheat from the chaff over on the popular social bookmarking site. The knight sports a special shield with a Reddit coat of arms, an arrow-shaped downvote sword, and an adjustable antenna.

The statue was listed on ThisIsWhyImBroke for $7500(USD), but has since been sent to the Reddit offices as a gift. Wow. Nice present. Why doesn’t anyone ever send me something like this? I guess if I had over 37 billion pageviews last year, I’d have more fans.

New Nexus 7 surfaces in photos, packaging and all (update: more photos, video)

You know that new Nexus 7 that’s been leaked several times over the past few weeks? Well, it looks like someone got their hands on it early, according to these newly released images on Reddit. There’s not much else to glean from these snapshots aside from new packaging (we’ve included an image of that after the break), a SKU and what is obviously a new Nexus tablet — the rear matches the leaked renders we saw from @evleaks a couple of days ago. Aside from its 7-inch screen size, rumored specs include a 5-megapixel camera and that highly-anticipated Android 4.3. We’re not sure how this guy got it so early, but this does signify the imminent arrival of Google’s next tablet.

Update: A tipster has sent in more pictures of a device and packaging, showing off its rounded edges and Android 4.3 OS. Check out the gallery for a quick look or after the break for a video unboxing and hands-on posted by Android Police… all before Google’s new slate is even officially launched.

[Thanks, Rafael]

Google Street View’s Greatest, Weirdest Hits

Google Street View's Greatest, Weirdest Hits

Google Street View has something of a history for catching us in our more—uh, delicate states. And our more defecatory states. And our more dead states. While the latter is mostly just depressing, the rest are almost always delightful. And luckily for us, Captain-Obviouss has kindly prompted his fellow Redditors to compile "the most WTF things" that Google’s version of Earth has to offer. Here are our favorites so far.

Major Nelson takes Xbox One questions, says banned users will ‘absolutely not’ lose games

Major Nelson takes Xbox One questions, says banned users will 'absolutely not' lose games

E3 is over, but Microsoft still has a long way to go to answer questions from gamers about its new Xbox One console, particularly when it comes to the effects of DRM. Director of Programming of Xbox Live Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson takes on the most upvoted ones from posters in Reddit’s games section in this video interview with Chloe Dykstra. One question that seems to have a clear answer is whether banned users will lose access to any games they’ve activated, as he stated “Absolutely not, you will always have access to the games you purchased.” That goes against a previous response from the Xbox Support twitter account, although that may have been the result of confusion between the Xbox One and Xbox 360 policies. A question with no satisfying response yet however, is what gamers can expect years down the road if Xbox One’s authentication servers are shut down. Major Nelson followed up with a response in the comment thread that “I’ll get the real answer, I just don’t know it yet.”

Interestingly, the question he wished more people would have asked is about the “family package” and, we assume game sharing with a single account, after previously bringing up its cloud library as one upside to the new DRM setup. Tracking back to the original debut’s focus on the console’s HDMI input and TV overlays he mentioned using snap mode to watch TV while gaming, or getting Xbox Live notifications and jumping “instantly” to a game while watching TV. A similar crowdsourced interview was planned with the PlayStation team, but cancelled. Major Nelson says he will address more questions leading up to launch and is planning an ask me anything session later, so keep your (many) inquiries at the ready.

Skype co-founder reveals service’s origins as WiFi-sharing network

EDIT SkypeFon

Everyone and their mother knows Skype as a call and chat messenger, but it would’ve been a completely different beast if its founders’ original plans came to fruition.”The initial idea was to develop a WiFi-sharing network, and then provide various ‘telecom-like’ services on top of that, such as TV and telephony,” explained founding engineer Jaan Tallinn in a Reddit AMA.

Tallin compared the project to Fon, but he and his co-founders hit a wall: they couldn’t offer TV services because they were battling copyright lawsuits as developers of P2P file-sharing site Kazaa. The team also had trouble finding a decent VoIP product to attach to the service and wound up concocting their own technology instead. The new VoIP tech, which was supposed to be named Skyper until the team noticed Skyper.net was already taken, eventually became the focus of the service. It’s an interesting look at the birth of the chat messenger we know today. Now if only we could figure out if the government has direct access to Skype’s logs, we’d be set.
