Molson Canadian Beer Fridge Locks out Anyone Not from Canada

Beer is one of the most popular adult beverages in the world. We might not all like our beer the same temperature, but few things make us happier than free beer. One Canadian beer company has set off with an interesting campaign that might make Canadians the most popular people on the block.

Molson Canadian took some automated beer refrigerators to various locations around Europe including London and Brussels. The bright red been fridges had the Canadian maple leaf on the front and a sign that read, “Canadians scan your passport to open fridge.” A special passport scanner inside verifies that it’s actually from Canada before opening the fridge door.

Molson recorded footage from the people trying to get the fridge open in different areas. In at least one place, a Canadian showed up, scanned his passport, and opened the fridge. The red box was stuffed to the gills with free Molson Canadian beer that was shared out creating an instant party.

The company recently brought the fridge to the Sochi Winter Olympics, offering up free beer to Canadian athletes.

Turn Your Fridge into a Vintage Arcade Cabinet

Sadly, most of us don’t have room – or the spare cash – for a proper arcade cabinet in our homes. It is still fun to pretend though. And now through the magic of decals and Etsy you can turn your fridge into a retro arcade cabinet.

These awesome decals sell for $39.99 a set from Etsy seller Walking Dead Promotions and they will remind you of the good old days every time you open the fridge. Each decal is self-adhesive vinyl and they are easy to apply. They can also be easily removed and leave no residue, aside from the residue of nostalgia.

You don’t even have to insert a coin to snack. Now if you can just make the rest of your kitchen look like an arcade, you will be all set.

V-Tex Technology Chills Drinks in Seconds: Coldsnap

Microwave ovens let us heat food in seconds. Soon we’ll have a similar device to cool drinks. A British company called Enviro-Cool and its partners are working on a rapid cooling technology called V-Tex. A refrigerator using V-Tex can cool a canned drink in just 45 seconds. Screw hoverboards or jet packs, I want this fast fridge now.

V-Tex refrigerators create rotate cans or bottles while cooling them in water to avoid forming slush. Apparently the fridges rotate drinks in such a way that carbonated drinks won’t build up pressure and explode when opened.

Here’s a chart that shows how fast the prototype can cool drinks. It’s clear that metal cans are the way to go, since they conduct thermal energy much better than glass.

As much as I love novelty ice trays, I’d rather have a cold drink in a jiffy. Let’s hope this technology finds its way to consumer appliances soon.

Han Solo in Carbonite Fridge: An Ice Box for Tattooine

With this awesome Han Solo in carbonite fridge, Jabba can just reach inside and grab a cold brew or a chilled toad to enjoy while he watches his private dancers. It definitely beats just hanging some frozen dude on your wall.
Hanasonic Fridge

The problem of course is that, that little psycho Salacious Crumb will steal all of your popsicles and then cackle about it at your feet all day. Oh well. Obviously, this model of fridge comes from “Hanasonic”.

So when will we be able to buy our own Han Solo in carbonite fridge? Somebody needs to get to work on that now. I have a lot of nerd dollars just waiting to be spent.

WSJ: Google working on an Android-powered game system, smart watch and new Nexus Q

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google might make another foray into living room hardware as it’s currently developing an Android powered gaming console. Since that’s just not enough of a rumor bomb, the talkative “people familiar with the matter” also claim a wristwatch and followup to its “postponedNexus Q project are on the way. If you believe the rumors, its reason for jumping into all these categories is to beat products Apple is reportedly developing in the same categories, with at least one of them launching this fall. Finally, the leaks indicate Google’s next major Android update will be “tailored to low-cost devices in developing countries,” and are ready to go in a much wider variety of devices.

That could mean laptops or even appliances running the rumored Key Lime Pie flavor of Android, built by manufacturers like Samsung which is already working on a watch of its own. Also mentioned is HP, which the report goes on to claim is building laptops that run Android. Companies like Ouya, Mad Catz, Pebble and GEAK probably think Mountain View is already late to the party, but official OS-level support and heavily marketed hardware could take these segments to the next level.

Fiat 500s Turned into Refrigerators: Cool Cars, Literally.

European automobile maker Fiat has teamed up with appliance company Smeg to create some awesome retro refrigerators out of old cars. They’re basically finding classic Fiat 500s, cutting off the front ends, gutting the insides, and turning them into the coolest fridges ever.

It’s sad that all these cars are being chopped up, but the resulting refrigerators look pretty darn cute, so it is hard to be too mad at them. The instrument panel is still inside, though it’s not exactly where you’d expect to find it. You can use it to adjust the temperature.

The “Smeg 500s” are coming soon and will be available in white, red and green. We don’t have any word on pricing, but I’m sure they won’t be cheap. Who wants one?

Darth Vader Beer Fridge: Use the Frost, Luke!

Behold the power of the Dark Side. I always knew that Darth Vader had a cold heart and now he is putting it to good use keeping beer and booze chilled. He is basically a caped refrigerator and that’s a far better trick than being good with a lightsaber or Force-choking some guy.

This Darth Vader fridge is from artist Tom Sachs, who also made this. I always suspected that this was what the Emperor turned Anakin into, so that he could have a walking beer fridge and bring the party with him wherever he goes.

This also makes a duel with Vader a real treat. Just slice him with your lightsaber and put your mouth under the jettisoning stream of beer.

Police Box Kit Makes Your Fridge Cooler on the Outside

Doctor Who fans may remember this picture of a refrigerator that’s been modified to look like the TARDIS, or at least a traditional British police box. It turns out that the people who made that fridge are selling kits so you can have your own TARDIS fridge at home too.

The kit started out as a pet project of Joy Alyssa Day and B.E. Johnson. Joy was a bit disappointed when she found out that the image of her customized fridge went viral but she and B.E. were barely credited. But she also noticed that many people were asking where they could buy the fridge, so the couple made the next best thing. You can order the kit from Joy and B.E.’s website.

The kits sell for $185 (USD) and can be customized according to the dimensions of your fridge. Joy and B.E. can also include a tiny door for your fridge’s ice maker if it has one – it’s the one with the “Pull to Open” phrase on the fridge door. Best of all, they can also add a sound module that can be programmed to play sound effects when the fridge doors open. I guess we all know what sound effects you want to have on there.

Samsung targets LG in $45 million suit, claims corporate image ‘tarnished’ by fridge advertisements

Samsung targets LG in $45 million suit, claims corporate image 'tarnished' by fridge advertisements

Samsung’s corporate image has become slightly tainted as of late — some might argue that recent launch events are to blame, but the company has a different culprit in mind: LG. This latest accusation relates to the company’s position in the all-too-competitive home appliance space. Samsung has filed a lawsuit against LG in South Korea, targeting online advertisements that cited information that the company claims to be incorrect. You see, last year, LG told the public that its own refrigerator offered the highest capacity, but according to the suit, that badge of honor belongs to Samsung. This, of course, follows an LG suit against Samsung for its own promotional video on YouTube last year. 50 billion Korean won are at stake this time around, which works out to roughly $45 million — perhaps just enough for Samsung to recoup the costs of its massive Radio City Galaxy S 4 spectacle.
