We’ve seen a number of improvements to Google Hangouts over the past couple of months that have certainly helped its users get the most out of it, two of the most recent updates adding automatic muting while you type and a screen capture feature. Today, Google is once again adding another feature to its Hangout chat client, and this one will certainly delight parents around the world who have no idea what’s wrong with their printer at 2 a.m. as you can now remotely control each other’s computer.
That’s right – remote desktop control is now available on Google Hangouts, which can only be done if the other user gives you permission to do so, during a video call. The process of initiating a remote desktop session is easy as you’ll first need to start a Hangout, then click on View More Apps > Add Apps > Hangouts Remote Desktop. Once you’ve activated this feature, you’ll be able to help out any and all comers with their computer issues. Just remember you’re probably going to be video chatting with whoever it is you’re helping remotely, so we recommend you keep the eye rolling to a minimum.

Chrome Remote Desktop comes out of beta, adds real-time audio feed for Windows users
Posted in: Today's ChiliAfter a year of living in beta, Chrome Remote Desktop is finally ready for primetime. Similar to other screen sharing services like LogMeIn and Splashtop, Chrome Remote Desktop lets you access other computers remotely. Of course, it is special to the Chrome browser, and by extension, the Chrome OS. The latest version of the app adds a couple of new features like a real-time audio feed for Windows users and the ability to copy-and-paste between remote and local computers. You can use this with any Chrome browser of course, but it could prove especially useful for those with Chromebooks, as you can easily communicate with a presumably storage-laden home PC while still toting around a lightweight notebook.

The video out feature in Windows Phone 7 is reserved for select Microsoft employees, and now one enterprising member of the XDA Developers forum. With certain files ripped from an LG Panther 7003 ROM, the help of someone on the inside and many months of work, forum member marsrogers succeeded in pushing video from his Samsung Focus to a companion PC app. Don’t get too excited though — this particular trick will not be released to the masses so the MS confidant involved is not exposed. However, it’s not all bad news, as marsrogers’ source reports that Windows Phone 8 will have remote desktop capability straight out of the box. Sadly, for those of you carrying around current-gen WP devices, there’s still no hope.

Splashtop Remote Desktop now available on Windows 8, gives you all the access you need
Posted in: Today's ChiliWith Splashtop currently holding spots in a slew of Android slabs, Cupertino’s notorious iDevices and even HP’s cadaverous TouchPad, the next obvious step was to set up its Remote Desktop shop inside Redmond’s upcoming Windows 8. And smartly enough, that’s exactly what Splashtop’s done. In preparation for the eventual release of Microsoft’s tile-friendly OS in a couple of months, the service has let it be know that its new (and very handy) tablet application’s now ready to take advantage of the system’s native gestures while doing what it does best — which is giving remote access to both Mac and Windows PCs. Given its “consumer preview” status, the Splashtop app isn’t fully cooked just yet, but it should give anyone a good idea of what to expect once the real deal becomes available.

Splashtop for iPad gets major update: Retina support, easier remote desktopping (update: but at a price)
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you wake up to find the Splashtop Streamer widget on your PC or Mac begging to be updated, then it’s probably worth it — especially if you have a new iPad lying around. Splashtop 2 has been optimized to work with the Retina display, which makes it a cinch to squeeze your entire Windows or OS X desktop onto the 10-inch screen without it looking terrible. The system has also been redesigned to avoid the need to enter IP addresses, passwords, port numbers or Google account details. Instead, you’ll create a new Splashtop 2 login that should work once across all your devices. The UI seems a lot friendlier, there’s a new in-app purchase to “supercharge” network performance (edit: also required for connections outside of the same WiFi network if you’re a new customer, see below), plus there’s improved support for fluid video streaming at up to 30fps. (Alas, there’s still no fullscreen support for Windows Media Center users though.) The new streamer and iPad app are available now, while the Android update should arrive soon. Want to see it in action? Head past the break for the promo video.
Update: We didn’t fully appreciate this at first, but cross-network remote desktopping is no longer free to new customers. If you’re coming to Splashtop for the first time, you have to make the in-app purchase ($1 per month or $10 per year) to enable “Anywhere Access.” That said, the Splashtop 2 app for iPad is currently selling for $2 — an 80 percent discount which largely compensates for the first year of charges.
