Researchers store memory bit on a lone molecule, could pave the way for petabyte SSDs

Researchers store memory bit on a molecule, get 50,000 times denser storage than hard disk The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) just deflated the size of a bit down to a solitary nanometer — the length of an organic molecule. The international research team managed it by first embedding a magnetized iron atom into a molecule made up of 51 atoms, then taking advantage of so-called memristive and spintronic properties. By applying a current, they flipped the atom’s magnetic charge, altering the resistance of the molecule as well — which they subsequently measured, storing a bit. Compared to a typical magnetic drive which needs 3 million atoms per bit, a device made this way could theoretically store 50 thousand times as much data in the same size — and would be an all-electric device, to boot. If the research ever pans out, a terabyte magnetic drive could turn into a 50 petabyte solid state unit — hopefully ready in time for all those 4K home movies you’ll need to store one day soon.

Sony has no definitive plans for Resistance series, says report

If you love playing Resistance, the popular first-person shooter/ third-person shooter video game series developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony, you’ll probably be disappointed (hopefully not) to hear that Sony has no definitive plans for Resistance. In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine in U.K., Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Online producer Daniel Brooke reportedly said “The Resistance franchise has been exciting to work on. But as for the future, we have no definitive plans.”

So far, there have been five Resistance games – three on PlayStation 3, one on PlayStation Portable, and one on PlayStation Vita. The latest is Resistance: Burning Skies, a spin-off of the series that was launched in May this year and is developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita. With the game’s developers, Insomniac Games, out of the picture following its decision to stop working on it, and Sony saying that it has no definitive plans, the future of the game is bleak. We can’t really say that the series is over. We can only speculate based on Daniel Brooke’s words. The word definitive means final. So, the series could go on, but apparently Sony does not have a final plan yet.
