RadioShack tells CEO James F Gooch to go home, cos he cant stay thereRadioShack’s board of directors have asked current CEO James F. Gooch to step down from his position, effective immediately. While the management team doesn’t have a replacement in mind, current CFO Dorvin Lively will assume control of the retailer while a recruitment agency begins headhunting. Neither party offered any reasons for the announcement, but the wording of the release (below) did bring to mind the phrase “bloodless coup” for some reason.

Barnes & Noble must want no corner of Britain untouched by Nooks. Following its planned bookstore invasion, the American company is bringing both the Nook Simple Touch and its GlowLight cousin to Sainsbury’s and Waitrose supermarkets, as well as Dixons Retail-owned chains Currys and PC World. When the e-readers arrive at the outlets’ respective online and retail stores from early October onwards, they’ll bring the Nook’s reach to nearly 2,000 UK sales points — not quite ubiquitous coverage, but more than double what we saw in our most recent check. About all that’s left is to offer the Android tablets that have been conspicuously missing from Barnes & Noble’s initial expansion strategy.

If the MakerBot store in Manhattan is the East coast’s vanguard for 3D printer stores, Deezmaker’s just-opened store in Pasadena, California is the equivalent pioneer for the West coast crew. As of now, you can walk through the doors at 290 North Hill Avenue and at least see the store’s own Bukobot printer in action, even if high demand through Kickstarter pre-orders precludes walk-in sales for the next few weeks. When you can make that impulse purchase, however, you’ll find the Bukobot at a relatively cheap $600 and may see some alternatives during your visit. Store owner and Bukobot creator Diego Porqueras stresses to Ars Technica that he wants Deezmaker lasting for the long haul, and he may have chosen just the right area to make that happen — the shop is a stone’s throw from the experimenters (and simply curious) at Caltech, NASA’s JPL and Pasadena City College. No matter how it all shakes out, we’re hoping that the two near-simultaneous store openings are the start of a larger trend that takes 3D printing into the mainstream.

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tabletsIt’s a lonely world when you’ve no storefronts to call your own. Shortly after Target decided it best to halt the sales of Amazon’s Kindle products, it’s being reported that Walmart is following suit. A quote obtained by Reuters suggests that Wally World’s bigwigs won’t be carrying Amazon tablets and e-readers “beyond the existing inventory and purchase commitments.” And yes, that includes “all Kindle models current and recently announced.” No actual reasoning was given beyond the conventional company line, but one has to wonder if Walmart isn’t somehow considering getting into some of the businesses that it was previously helping Amazon push.

It’s also taken a plunge with Vudu, as it’s offering an in-store disc-to-digital UltraViolet conversion as well. You might say that Walmart would never, ever start hawking its own e-readers, but crazier things have happened — Best Buy has an entire brand devoted to in-house goods, and Amazon itself has expanded from an online storefront for laundry detergent and bestselling novels to a bona fide hardware mainstay.

Apple, carrier stores open at 8AM on September 21st for iPhone 5 sales, early preorder tallies are 'incredible'

Apple regularly likes to kickstart major launches with early retail openings, and it’s just confirmed that the natural order of things is intact: both its own stores as well as those for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will open at 8AM local time on September 21st to take iPhone 5 sales from anyone who missed out on the pre-order rush. As for how well those pre-orders have gone so far? Apple’s statement on the subject doesn’t give us concrete numbers at this stage, but it certainly hints at an upbeat outlook:

“Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible,” said Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris. “We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”

Best Buy takes 2012 Amazon Kindle pre-orders for those that hate online shopping, appreciate irony

There’s a certain amount of self-contradiction going on if you’re visiting a brick-and-mortar store to pre-order a device that’s all about e-commerce. If you relish the irony, Best Buy will gladly let you reserve Amazon’s $69 Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, upgraded Kindle Fire and both sizes of the Kindle Fire HD (including the LTE model) at both regular locations and Best Buy Mobile. The retailer isn’t as specific with its in-stock dates as Amazon: beyond the $69 Kindle’s September 14th date, we’re only promised a generic October release for the Paperwhite and 7-inch Kindle Fires, while the 8.9-inch tablets will be available “before Christmas.” Not the quickest path to getting a new Kindle in your hands, then, but it may be the best way to get a hands-on before clinching the deal.

Tesco Buys E-bookseller Mobcast For $7.2 million As It Squares Up To Amazon And B&N In The UK

Another development in the UK market for e-readers, tablets and e-books as Amazon and Barnes & Noble move closer to launching more of their services and devices in the UK and Europe: the retail giant Tesco has purchased Mobcast, a digital bookseller co-founded by pulp fiction writer Andy McNab. Tesco tells TechCrunch that the price of the acquisition is $7.2 million.

Tesco notes that Mobcast has a catalog of some 130,000 books, but the main idea behind this acquisition for Tesco, already one of the biggest booksellers in the UK, will be to give Tesco its own digital book distribution platform, including cloud-based storage for the books. “They provide excellent end-to-end service, from injecting the material from publishers all the way to retail to customers,” the spokesperson told TechCrunch.

One of the big benefits of Mobcast, which first entered the market in 2007, is that it is available across all major mobile platforms. Tesco also already sells the Kindle from Amazon among its wide range of other consumer electronics.

The deal comes on the heels of Tesco buying movie and TV streaming service blinkbox in 2011 and Internet radio service WE7 in June 2012.

“We want our customers to have the widest choice in digital entertainment. We are already one of the UK’s largest booksellers and Mobcast will help us offer even more choice for the large and growing number of customers who want to buy and enjoy books on their digital devices whenever and wherever they want,” said Michael Comish, CEO Tesco Digital Entertainment, in a statement announcing the deal.

Mobcast co-founder and CEO Tony Lynch (understandably, given how huge Tesco is) points to how this will give Mobcast much wider exposure in the UK market: “We are delighted the products that Mobcast has developed will now be used to introduce the joys of eBook reading to more book lovers in the UK,” he said.

Given that the site was co-founded by bestselling author McNab, it seems like a perfect fit for Tesco, a purveyor of mainstream titles. McNab highlights the cloud-portability element of the deal: “As an author I always thought the ability to carry your library around and read on all your personal devices would be a huge benefit to all. We have developed a product that makes this possible, and being acquired by Tesco ensures that this original vision will be available to as many people as possible.”

What’s not clear is how this deal will affect existing business for Mobcast, which works with operators like Singtel, Everything Everywhere (T-Mobile and Orange in the UK) and Nokia to power e-bookstores.

Nor is it clear yet when Tesco will integrate all of its current catalog on to the Mobcast site, and whether the platform will be used for more than just books. Or whether the acquisition will mean that Tesco will pre-load the app on to devices that it sells, rather than simply using it as a part of its already-extensive e-commerce operation, which includes online ordering and delivery of groceries, electronics, and much more, which it uses to complement a massive, Walmart-style physical operation.

We are asking Tesco and Mobcast about these details and will update as we learn more.


Square scores retail deal with AT&T, swipes smile off competitors’ faces

Been paying for your frappuccino via Square, and fancied getting some of that diminutive payment-taking action for your own business? Well, previously, if you didn’t live near an Apple store, Radioshack, Walgreens, Fed Ex office, Best Buy, Target, UPS or Wal-Mart then you were fresh outta retail-luck. Or living in a cave. Now, however AT&T has started stocking the card readers at all its bricks and mortar outlets too, further plumping-up that number of locations that stock it. Frankly, we’re not surprised to see this reaching more shops, if the sales guys spend all their time drinking that brand-endorsed coffee.
