Cube U9GT5 Android Jelly Bean tablet touts iPad Retina display

Those Chinese manufacturers sure know how to quickly copy what’s available or popular and pump out cheap devices — especially tablets. What we have here is a popular Chinese tablet manufacturer, Cube, showing off their new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean powered tablet that also rocks a “retina” like 9.7-inch display.

Cube was the first tablet maker to release a tablet with the Rockchip RK3066 dual-core processor way back when dual-core tablets were a rarity, and today they’ve done the same with their new U9GT5 Retina Display Android tablet. This sleek little tablet rocks a similar 2048 x 1536 resolution display as the new iPad (iPad 3), which offers the same 264 pixels per inch as the all new iPad — although surely this won’t cost as much.

Under the hood however is where the large differences are. For one you’ll be enjoying the latest and greatest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by Google, but the internal specs aren’t all that great. It uses the same aging Rockhip RK3066 1.6 GHz dual-core processor, manages 1GB of RAM, and comes with 8GB of internal storage. While that all sounds relatively nice, it certainly won’t be up to par with most tablets from Apple, Samsung, or ASUS.

It’s safe to say this tablet won’t be getting purchased by us anytime soon, but most likely they’ll be plastered across eBay in the usual Chinese knock-off tablet fashion we’ve seen for years. Pricing on the 8 and 16GB models weren’t made available but most likely they’ll be cheap. Would you buy this, or just opt for the Nexus 7 or upcoming iPad Mini?

Microsoft brings Retina display support to Office for Mac

Microsoft brings Retina display support to Office for Mac

Microsoft brought Office for Mac 2011 up to speed with Mountain Lion this summer, and it’s now back with another update that finally adds support for the MacBook Pro’s Retina display. That comes courtesy of version 14.2.4 of the software suite, and that added sharpness naturally extends across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. You can find the update waiting for you in the Microsoft AutoUpdate tool if you haven’t been prompted to download it already.

7th-generation iPod nano hands-on!

7thgeneration iPod nano handson!

Not to be outdone by a refreshed iPod touch (and, let’s face it, a new iPhone), Apple also shot out a 5.4mm-thick iPod nano today — that’s 38 percent thinner than the one it replaces. We just got our hands on the newest, tiniest music player outside of Apple’s product launch today, replete with a 2.5-inch multitouch panel and a familiar Home button. As you’d expect, the enlarged display is hugely beneficial. While there’s no bona fide version of iOS on here, the stripped-down variant seems sufficient for handling media alone. As if the ability to watch widescreen video wasn’t enough, fitness gurus are also apt to take notice — inbuilt support for Nike+ gear, along with Bluetooth, make this one potent device.

The Lightning connector seems to make a lot of sense here, given the dearth of real estate along the bottom, but somehow the company squeezed a big enough battery in here to net some 30 reported hours of battery life. In playing with it, we found screen transitions to be adequately smooth, and video playback was surprisingly enjoyable to watch. The screen is most definitely less stunning than the one on the iPod touch, but at $149, you can bet quite a bit of these end up in stockings this holiday season.

5th-generation iPod touch hands-on!

5thgeneration iPod touch handson!

It’s obvious that the iPhone 5 is the star of today’s show, but Apple’s not letting its iPod line go untouched. The newest iPod touch takes a note from the newfangled display on its cellular sibling, bringing a vaster panel (the same 4-inch, 1,136 x 640 one found on the new iPhone). At 88 grams and just 6.1mm thick, it’s also shockingly thin and light — of course, the anodized aluminum backing makes it feel like a premium piece of kit. Premium, as in, right up there with the iPhone. In a world where Apple’s seeing its iPod sales sink quarter after quarter due to self-cannibalization from the iPad and iPhone, it’s interesting (but appreciated) to see so much effort placed on the new iPod touch.

The introduction of the dual-core A5 chip (that’s dual-core on the CPU and the graphics side) is a huge boon for the touch. Apple’s claiming a 7x improvement in graphics, and given that this thing is claiming such a huge swath of the mobile gaming market, it’s pretty much a necessity. Indeed, our interactions with the device were notably faster than on the prior touch. We didn’t exactly have 40 hours here to test the audio playback claims (in fact, we didn’t even have eight to test the claims on video), but you can bet that’ll be a huge selling point.

iPhone 5 hands-on!

iPhone 5 handson!

At long last, the iPhone 5. We just got our hands on Apple’s latest smartphone following its unveiling in San Francisco, and suffice it to say, it’s a beautiful thing. Some might say we’ve been waiting for this moment since October 4th of last year, but another crowd may say that the real next-gen iPhone has been on the burner for much longer. Indeed, this is the first iPhone since June of 2010 to showcase an entirely new design, but it’s obvious that Apple’s not going to deviate far when it comes to aesthetics.

Apple followers will aptly recall Steve Jobs’ quote in July of 2010 — you know, that one about “no one” wanting a big phone, with current CEO Tim Cook seated just feet from Steve as the phrase was uttered. Now, however, Apple’s inching ever closer to that very realm, with an elongated 4-inch display that enables new apps to take advantage of more pixels (1,136 x 640), while legacy apps can still operate within a familiar space. The phone itself doesn’t feel too much different than the iPhone 4 and 4S; yes, it’s a bit taller, but by keeping the width the same, you’ll utilize a very familiar grasp to hold it.

In typical Apple fashion, even the finest details have been worked over tirelessly. The metal feels downright elegant to the touch, and the same line we’ve said time and time again applies here: there’s no doubting the premium fit and finish when you clutch one of these things. Yeah, the headphone port’s now on the bottom, but avid Galaxy Nexus iPod touch users shouldn’t have too much trouble adjusting.

New iPod Touch confirmed with 4-inch Retina Display, dual-core A5 processor

Apple had a few hardware surprises up their sleeves today and one of those is the all new iPod Touch. Yup, Apple just announced another iPod which you can call the 5th generation iPod, or the new iPod Touch. The new and improved model is receiving plenty of love the iPhone 5 did with the same 4-inch Retina Display and brushed aluminum design. More details after the break.

Gone is the chrome finish that will get scratched up within days, and instead the all new iPod has a brushed aluminum finish just like the iPhone 5. Then they’ve added the same impressive 4-inch HD Retina display for stunning visuals while you enjoy all of the latest games. Here’s the rundown:

The brand new iPod Touch is looking rather impressive dressed in white. They’re rocking out to some Foo Fighters and we’re loving the new camera. This is the thinnest iPod Touch yet being just 6.1mm thick. It’s also the lightest weighing 88 grams while still managing to get improved in all areas. We have the larger 4-inch Retina 326 ppi display, dual-core A5 processor, and of course the camera. The new iPod Touch’s 5 megapixel camera (with flash) has tons of improvements, is 25% thinner, and will have most of the features like panoramic mode and dynamic low light modes just like the iPhone 5. Oh and the new Touch’s camera can now shoot full 1080p HD video. Then the 720p Facetime front shooter is clearly present.

Apple managed to fit all of this into a super sleek iPod Touch while still boosting battery life. You can expect over 40 hours of music and 8 hours of continuous video. Those might not be amazing results but with all the boosts this device received, we’ll welcome those usage results. Whoa! The new iPod Touch has Siri but more on that is coming shortly. iPhone 5 4-inch Retina display detailed with massive resolution

The iPhone 5′s display has been revealed today at Apple’s press event, bringing with it a lovely 1136 x 640 screen resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio across 4-inches of space. This device will be rolling out with a Retina quality display, mind you, at 326 PPI, amongst the most high-definition on the market today. This display offers a 5th row of icons for the iOS 6 experience and still fits in our hand with the same width as the iPhone 4S and before.

This device has also been shown to be bringing an improved camera on the back – though it is still called 8 megapixels, it’s a big boost, as well as audio and video enhancements as well. The iPhone 5 will come with three microphones for better noise cancellation than ever before as well as an improved A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 is set to bring on a new era of mobile products for Apple with its new 16-pin port plug for USB and will be coming soon to an Apple store near you.

iPhone 5 revealed as ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’

The iPhone 5 has officially arrived folks, and Apple is making some pretty big promises about it. The first is that it’s the “world’s thinnest smartphone.” In his announcement, Phil Schiller revealed that the iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thick, which is an 18% decrease in thickness over the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 is pretty light too, weighing in at only 112 grams – that’s 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is the same width as the iPhone 4S is, but it’s a good amount taller. That change was made to accommodate the new screen, which measures in at 4-inches. That’s a pretty significant upgrade, considering that iPhone screens of the past have come in at 3.5-inches.

Of course, the iPhone 5 also features Retina Display, which will undoubtedly be a big selling point for the brand new device. All in all, Apple promises a new iPhone that feels great in your hand, and with those specifications, we don’t doubt that it will. Be sure to hit up our liveblog of Apple’s event for second-by-second updates, and check out our Apple portal for more in-depth coverage of the event!

Tim Cook boasts Mountain Lion numbers at iPhone 5 event

Everyone may be waiting for Apple to reveal the iPhone 5 during today’s highly anticipated event, but before the reveals happen, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to boast the latest numbers for the company’s products. Needless to say, if Tim Cook is bragging about them in front of a packed house, you can bet they’re pretty good.

Cook started with OS X Mountain Lion, saying that since its release, 7 million people have downloaded a copy. That makes Mountain Lion the fastest selling Apple release of all time, definitely something worth bragging about. The new MacBook Pro with Retina Display – which Apple says is the best Mac it has ever made – and the MacBook Air have been doing quite well too.

So well, in fact, that Apple says its notebooks are now in first place as far as US market share is concerned. To get specific, that’s a 27% market share for its notebooks, and Cook says that for the past 6 years straight, Mac has grown “significantly faster” than PC has. That definitely isn’t bad, and you can bet that Apple will look to keep that growth up with future Mac releases. Be sure to tune into our liveblog for up-to-the minute updates straight from Apple’s press event, and have a look at our Apple portal for more in-depth coverage!

Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch and iMacs being shipped by suppliers now

This week may be all about the iPhone 5, but Apple is apparently gearing up for other launches a little more silently. According to DigiTimes, which has spoken to sources from Apple’s “upstream supply chain,” the company’s suppliers have started shipping a new line of iMac all-in-ones and and the new MacBook Pro 13.3-inch with Retina Display. Apparently, these new computers will be launching sometime this month or in October.

If they’re shipping now, it seems a little hard to believe that they won’t launch until October, but according DigiTimes’ sources, Apple wants to launch both of these new computers in time to take advantage of both the back-to-school and holiday shopping rushes. Perhaps these new Macs will get a reveal at Apple’s big event on Wednesday?

Apple supposedly had three different iMacs planned for this new line, but due to production issues with the panels for “the high-end model,” Apple has pushed that one back, and will only launch the mid-range and entry-level models for the time being. Keep in mind that these new iMacs aren’t expected to boast Retina Display, but this new rumor does claim that at least the high-end model is getting an upgraded CPU along with those new displays that have caused this delay. Unfortunately, these supply sources weren’t able to give a launch window for the delayed all-in-one model.

We’ve heard rumors of a new display for the iMac in the past, so that part about the new displays causing issues seems at least somewhat plausible. As for the rest, we’ll just have to wait and see where this rumor goes. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait much longer to find out, as Apple’s event is now just two days away. With all of the rumors floating around, the event certainly seems like it will hold much more than just the introduction of the iPhone 5, so stay tuned and be sure to follow our liveblog of the event starting at 10 AM PST on Wednesday morning!
