Apple MacBook Air Equipped with Retina Display [Rumor]

Apple MacBook Air Equipped with Retina Display [Rumor]

Yesterday we heard a rumor that Apple is considering putting  Retina display in the next generation of iPad Mini’s. Apple is now rumored to equip the MacBook Air with Retina display giving it a 2880 x 1800 pixel resolution. The new MacBook Air will be launching later in 2013, around the third quarter.  According to the rumor, both flavors of the MacBook Air, 11inch and 13 inch should sport the Retina display along with a slightly better looking body.

Apple began equipping the MacBook Pro laptop with a Retina display in 2012. Retina display is also available on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. However adding a Retina display to the MacBook air could also add to its price, as the Retina display technology adds a bit of money to the overall cost of production. Apple has been keeping the entry level laptop priced at $999 for the 11 inch version, but this might change as well. The other major consideration isthe amount of power consumed by the Retina display and for that Apple will have to add a better battery to the laptop. For now we still wait on official word from Apple.

Analyst believes the iPad will see a complete redesign by the end of April

According to Piper Jaffray, an investment research firm, Apple will most likely be hosting an event between March and April. An analyst at the firm, Gene Munster, analyzed the time frame of launch events held by Apple, and he believes that Apple’s full-sized iPad is due for a major redesign. He also believes the iPad Mini may receive an update of its own as well, but considering that it had just launched last October, it would be unlikely.

By analyzing the previous launch events held by Apple, Gene Munster believes that the Apple always holds a launch event in the Spring time. Combing through the 11 major product launch events held by Apple since the launch of the iPhone 3GS, Munster believes that the Spring event always centers around iPad updates, and that with it being the first Apple event of the year, it is going to feature something major. The ‘something major’ is speculated to be a complete redesign of the full-sized iPad that resembles the design of the iPad Mini. He also believes that the next iPad mini could be introduced at the event, and this time it will carry a Retina display.

Munster goes deeper into the details, and found that the average time between Apple’s launch events is 123 days, or about 4 months. He also analyzes that the longest time between events was about 216 days, or 7 months, and that was the gap between the iPad 2 launch in March 2011 and the iPhone 4S launch in October 2011. By taking those times into consideration, and also considering that every other company will be holding major launch events around that time, he believes that the event will be held in between March and April.

Apple TV is also due for an update sometime within the next 6 months, and Munster believes it will be updated to ‘prime the pump for the ultimate television’. Considering that Apple has just launched the iPad Mini and 4th gen iPad in October, there could be a change in the schedules of its launch events. We all remember how upset iPad 3 owners were when the 4th gen iPad was release just 7 months after they bought their devices.

MacBook Pro With Retina Display Prices Updated

MacBook Pro With Retina Display Prices UpdatedApple products are generally known to cost more than their Windows-powered counterparts, but over the years, you can say that the gap has been reduced significantly. Well, even better news for folks who are operating on a tight budget and yet want to pick up a new MacBook Pro with Retina display – Apple has decided to update its pricing by throwing in better processors at a more pocket-friendly sticker price. For starters, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display will now start at $1,499 for 128GB of flash, and $1,699 for a new 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash memory.

As for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, it will now run on a faster 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, with the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook boasting a new 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory. Not only that, the 13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of flash memory will also see its price slashed to a new low of $1,399. The new pricing has taken effect immediately via Apple’s online store as well as at retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. I wonder how folks who purchased a new MacBook Pro with Retina display last week felt with the new prices. [Press Release]

Apple CEO Tim Cook Calls OLED Displays ‘Awful’

Apple CEO Tim Cook Calls OLED Displays Awful

Someone needs to clue Apple CEO Tim Cook in on their new hires as just last week, they hired an OLED expert from LG, and today, Cook has spoken out against OLED displays.

During an investor conference hosted by Goldman Sachs, Cook called the color saturation on OLED displays “awful.” He continued his OLED rant by saying, “If you ever buy anything online and really want to know what the color is, as many people do, you should really think twice before you depend on the color from an OLED display.”

Of course, on the other side of the spectrum, Cook praised Apple’s Retina Display as he says it offers “superior quality” as the screen is twice as bright when compared to OLED screens.

OLED displays wasn’t the only topic within Cook’s crosshairs today as he also addressed rumors of Apple possibly creating an iPhone with a larger display, similar to the recent trend of phablet devices. Cook said he wouldn’t comment on the company’s plans, but criticized its competition as companies who focus on size and specifications can’t “create an amazing experience.”

Apple Mysteriously Hires AMOLED Expert From LG

Apple Mysteriously Hires AMOLED Expert From LG

Apple’s Retina Display offers some amazing visuals, but it could be receiving a boost now that Apple has hired a former senior researcher for LG.

According to a report from OLED Association, Dr. Lee Jeung-jil has been recruited by Apple for his previous experience researching OLED printing technology at LG as well as heading the research and development for LCD technology development at Samsung. Jeung-jil is said to be “more knowledgeable about OLEDs [than] any of Apple’s current staff, which is known to be quite strong.”

The purpose of the hire at this time is completely unknown, but considering Jeung-jil’s background, we could assume it’s going to be display related as having him work in the Apple cafeteria would be extremely silly and a waste of his skills. A number of us believe his influence could benefit Apple’s mobile devices by making its Retina Display even more detailed, or maybe his hiring has something to do with the long-rumored Apple TV.

Apple refreshes fourth generation iPad to include 128GB memory

Regardless of whether you love or hate the iPad, I am quite sure that you have crossed paths with it at least once in your lifetime. For those who fall under the latter category of feelings, well, perhaps this bit of news might irk you more, but for Apple fans, this is definitely pleasant news that will send you scurrying back to your piggy bank, wondering whether there is enough inside to help you make the jump to an upgrade. I am referring to the fourth generation iPad with Retina display which has just been announced to receive a bump to the total amount of storage space – it has basically doubled from 64GB to hit the 128GB mark, making it an Ultrabook alternative when you think about it. All you need now is a wireless keyboard accessory to hook up to the 128GB iPad and you’re good to go.

The 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad with Retina display will be made available for the iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models, and with double the storage capacity of its predecessor, this would mean you are able to stash away even more valuable content ranging from photos to documents, projects, presentations, books, movies, TV shows, music and apps among others.

Sure, this is not exactly a quantum leap when it comes to hardware, but still, 128GB of storage space would make the iPad all the more desirable if you have yet to pick one up from Apple.

Just to recap, the fourth generation iPad will come with a 9.7-inch Retina display, where it runs on the Apple-designed A6X processor, accompanied by a FaceTime HD camera with iOS 6.1 as the operating system of choice. Expect the new 128GB models of the fourth generation iPad to be made available before Valentine’s Day, starting on February 5, where it will come in black or white colors. The asking price? $799 and $929 respectively, for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

13-inch Retina MacBooks now available in Apple’s refurbished store

If you’ve been waiting for the new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pros to hit Apple’s refurbished store, you’re finally in luck. Apple has several refurbished models of the 13-inch Retina variant in stock and ready to ship to those who want to save a little bit of cash when buying their next laptop.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 3.00.25 PM

The 2.5 GHz Core i5 model with 128GB SSD is selling for $1,439 refurbished, compared to $1,699 for the brand-new model — a 15% discount. The 2.5 GHz Core i5 version with 256GB of storage is priced at $1,699, compared to the same model that’s $1,999 brand new, and the 2.9 GHz Core i7 with 512GB of storage is $2,289, compared to $2,689 brand new.

All three models come with 8GB of RAM and Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics, and all three are listed with a ship date of 1-3 business days. As with all of Apple’s refurbished products, these 13-inch Retina MacBook Pros have been thoroughly tested and carry a one-year warranty that equals that of brand-new MacBooks.

If you’re interested in the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro models, a few different versions are available in Apple’s refurbished store as well, and they were first released in the store just a couple weeks before the 13-inch models landed today. However, the 13-units took a bit more time to reach the refurbished store, hinting that not too many users are returning their smaller Retina MacBooks to Apple.

Firefox 18 offers Retina support for Macs, speeds things up with IonMonkey

Earlier today, Mozilla released Firefox 18, which brings with it a host of new features and improvements, including Retina display for Mac support. Thanks to the IonMonkey JavaScript compiler, Web games and apps are up to 25-percent faster, while Android Firefox users now get search suggestions while typing. You can download the latest release from the Firefox website.

firefox

IonMonkey follows the previously-used TraceMonkey and JagerMonkey Javascript compilers, and optimizes scripts before generating the executable code. Preliminary support has been added for WebRTC (Web Real Time Communication). The biggest change is support for Retina displays for Macs running OS X 10.7 or higher.

As far as improvements go, a new HTML scaling algorithm is in place that improves overall image quality, while tab switching has also been given a performance boost. MozTouch has been swapped out with support for W3C touch events, HTTPS pages will no longer load insecure content, and the issue with poor response when using proxies has been corrected.

In addition, a new version of Firefox for Android has been rolled out featuring some new changes that will make mobile users happy. Specifically, it has made somes changes to help keep users secure by implementing the malware detection desktop users have already enjoyed. When visting a URL that has been blacklisted, users will get a “Reported Attack Page!” warning. You can nab the app over at Google Play.

Apple now selling refurbished 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display beginning at $1,869

Apple now selling refurbished 15inch MacBook Pro with Retina display beginning at $1,869

We can’t say we’re exactly surprised to see Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro show up on the company’s “Certified Refurbished” online store — still, it’s good news for folks looking to save a little cash while getting a taste of Retina MBP straight from the source. Currently, Apple is only offering the 15-inch model (with a 2.3GHz, quad-core i7 CPU, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD) for $1,869, making it about $330 less than its non-refurbished counterpart — of course, that premium price tag also includes the accustomed one-year manufacturer’s warranty, which is a good security blanket to have when shelling out this much capital. As is usually the case with Cupertino’s rejuvenated goods, though, supplies may be somewhat limited, so now could be a great time to jump on the MacBook Pro with Retina display bandwagon.
