MiG-23 Arcade Cabinet Perfect for Playing Flying Games

I just recently had a custom arcade cabinet built for my basement. And while it’s totally awesome, mine has a classic arcade style to it. Had I known that having one built to look like an old Soviet MiG fighter jet was an option, though, I might have at least considered it.

This MiG-23 inspired arcade cabinet was recently made by Radek Michalowski. He was inspired to build it having lived just a few feet away from the gate of the 28th PLM (fighter air regiment) in Redzikowo, Poland. The cabinet is numbered 846 in tribute to the MiG-23 his friend’s father once flew.

The build is really something special, with a metal and rivet skin reminiscent of old airplanes (or some of the cooler furniture from Restoration Hardware). Radek doesn’t provide any details on the system inside the cabinet, only that it runs MAME – and it’s clear fromt the pictures that it’s got dual arcade sticks and real arcade buttons. Though it might have been even better with a pair of flight sticks.

If you’re interested in the MiG-23 arcade cabinet, head on over to Etsy, where it’s for sale for €2500 (~$3288 USD).

Oscilloscope Turned into an Awesome Clock

Vintage oscilloscopes are amazing devices. It turns out that they make great clocks too. It was around 1960, when Aaron’s grandfather purchased an Heathkit OR-1 oscilloscope, which he passed down in his family in excellent condition. Aaron later used his electronic hacking skills to turn the oscilloscope into a clock.

Turning an oscilloscope into a clock is no easy task. It takes some interesting control circuitry to get its display to show anything other than waveforms. So Aaron created a custom control board that can draw any shape on the CRT screen using just circles. It also squashes circles to draw a line, and cuts the beam entirely to slice a circle in half.

The end result looks spectacular and I bet you want one now. So do I. The good news is that Aaron sells custom-built oscilloscope clocks, as well as circuit boards for you to convert your own scope with. For more information, check out his website, Oscilloclock.com.

Rampage Neck Ties: Crush, Crumble and Choke

Remember Rampage? Good times. If you have never played the game, go find yourself an old arcade machine and start pumping quarters into it right now. (Or install MAME.) If you don’t do this, you deserve to miss out and have never played it.

Mayapixelskaya designed and made this trio of neck ties which celebrate the classic game. They are pretty awesome, showing scenes from the game – though you need to have three necks in order to show off the entire scene at once.

Atari World Combines 8-Bit and Real Life

When I was growing up, the Atari 2600 was a staple in family rooms everywhere. But despite the countless hours of entertainment these gaming systems provided, there’s no question they had primitive graphics. Imagine though if the Atari 2600 could have had real-world backgrounds for its games. It might look something like this…

atari world 1

For his Atari World series, digital artist Carlos Pérez combined idyllic real-world scenes with the rudimentary pixel graphics from an Atari 2600. The end result is both surreal and beautiful.

It would be cool if somebody went back and remade classic Atari 2600 games with these backgrounds. While their gameplay still might lack depth, they’d certainly be a feast for they eyes.

I Wish I Could Have Ate a Bit of This 8-Bit Mario Cake

I always wondered how clean it was down in those pipes where Mario would duck into. I certainly wouldn’t want to jump into some green pipe sticking out of the sidewalk. While a real sewer pipe might not be so pleasant, this one is filled with nothing but tasty goodness.

8 bit mario cake

This delightful 8-bit Mario cake by I Am Ginger Pops features the pixelated likeness of the plumber peeping his head out of a green drain pipe, surrounded by some of the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. In all honesty, I don’t think gum paste and fondant taste all that good, but Toad looks so delicious, I want to pop him into my mouth and chomp him down this second. And forget about the cake on the inside of the pipe – it’s a dense vanilla fudge cake. Damn, that sounds so much better than lousy old 1up mushrooms.

Great job on the cake, Ginger Pops. Now how can I get one to put in my belly?

Ben Heck Bakes a Raspberry Pi Portable

We’ve seen a small arcade machine that can be powered by a Raspberry Pi. Master modder Ben Heck decided to make an even tinier version of the tiny computer and put it in a custom case with buttons, turning it into a portable gaming device.

Aside from a Raspberry Pi, Ben Heck also used a 3.5″ LCD screen, a Teensy board, a couple of Li-ion batteries and some buttons from a Logitech gamepad.

Then he 3D printed a case, wired everything together and installed MAME on the Pi. You can skip to around 15:10 in the video below to see it working:

Can we just sit back for a minute and process what we saw? He made a freakin’ gaming device. On his own. This guy. This Ben Heck guy. He is quite the guy. If you have the same godly capabilities, head to Thingiverse to get the files you need to 3D print the case.

Nintendo R.O.B. Robot: The Lamp

I always thought that Pixar’s original Luxo, Jr. had a whole lot of personality for a desk lamp. But imagine if your lamp had eyes and arms? That’s what you get when you buy the Nintendo Robotic Operating Buddy lamp.

nes rob lamp 1

It started out as one of those Nintendo robots from the 1980s, but has since been decommissioned and turned into a table lamp. Despite the fact that R.O.B. no longer functions as a NES peripheral, you can still rotate him 360 degrees, open and close his arms, raise and lower his arms and shoulders, and even grip things in his pincers.

The NES R.O.B. lamp is available over on Woody6Switch’s Etsy shop for $125(USD).

Poppy Turns the iPhone Into a 3D Camera: View-Master 2.0

So far 3D video hasn’t taken off like high definition did, but that hasn’t stopped entrepreneurs from exploring its potential. But while most 3D-capable gadgets tout their cutting edginess, the inventors of Poppy did the opposite. The gadget, which allows you to shoot and view 3D videos and images using an iPhone or iPod Touch, is a throwback through and through.

poppy iphone 3d camera

If nothing else, I love how it looks. It’s not shiny, streamlined or made of machined aluminum – it’s a freaking plastic box. Even the way it works is low-tech. The Poppy has no moving or electronic parts. It just uses lenses and mirrors to achieve the 3D effect. The only high tech component of course is your iOS device. The Poppy only works with the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 and the 5th generation iPod Touch.

In the end though, the Poppy is up against the same problem that other 3D gadgets have. It promises a see-it-to-believe-it experience that just can’t be demonstrated or previewed. Still, that hasn’t stopped it from blowing through its Kickstarter goal with almost a month left on its fundraiser. Pledge at least $49 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Poppy as a reward.

A Modern Digital Alarm Clock With Retro Flip Stylings

Mad Men may have rekindled our love affair with the technology of yesteryear, but we’re still not quite ready to give up the modern conveniences we’ve come to rely on. And that’s why this retro-styled digital alarm clock is so wonderful.

UK Town Turned into a Level from Zelda

The UK town of Ipswich has an odd name, but that’s not what concerns us here. The town hosts an annual music and arts festival known as Switch Fringe, and this year there is a special addition to the program book. An 8-bit map of the town – from Zelda!

switch fringe zelda 1

Sound crazy? It is. The Decibel Kid designed it. He turned the entire town of Ipswich into a Zelda level. Pretty novel idea for this years event. But there is more than just this image. If you want, you can view a digital version of the map and zoom around to see all the fun details. If you look closely, you’ll even find Link wandering around the festival.

Too bad the level isn’t playable.

Cities are awesome when they look like games. Ipswich is my new favorite UK town.
