Lost Episode of Doctor Who Being Reanimated

Doctor Who has been around for half a century now. And many of the earliest episodes were lost or destroyed early in its history. The fourth episode of “The Tenth Planet,” a story featuring the first regeneration to the second Doctor, was lost in the 1970s. All that was left was a short clip of the regeneration. Now technology saves the day.

To the delight of fans everywhere, Planet 55 Studios is re-creating the lost episode in an animated format. They have been working on it for two years, and now they have released the first clip. In it you can see the regeneration scene and it looks pretty great.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see more.

Decorated Nerd T-Shirt: Wear Your Heart on Your, Uhm, Chest

A year ago we saw a set of awesome military-style pins for console gamers. But what if you’re not just a gaming nerd? Many of us also love other geeky things like science fiction shows, tabletop gaming and the like. If you’re a dork of all trades, you’ll love the Decorated Nerd T-shirt.

Designed by our pals at Nerd Approved, the shirt’s graphic is filled with references to various technological and recreational endeavors, many of which were bound to have your butt kicked in school just a couple of decades ago. Now practically everyone is a gamer. Come to think of it, if you’re under 20 years old you don’t deserve to wear this shirt. Just kidding.

Brave and anonymous young warriors can order the Decorated Nerd t-shirt from SplitReason for $19 (USD). No, it doesn’t come in any colors other than poop green. Stop complaining, Private! Why don’t you earn your stripes by fighting against oppressive DRM, lazy DLC and all the other acronyms that us old folks don’t care for or understand anymore! Use your 3D-printing, Kickstarting, motion-controlling powers and make your elders proud. Don’t use petitions though. That’s just lame. Your enemies react to numbers, not letters, if you know what I mean.

NES Console with Built-in Screen: 8-Bit Laptop

Even today, NES aka Famicom games are still popular with gamers. We’ve seen people come up with a variety of alternative ways of getting their NES fix. You can run an emulator, buy a third party portable or even hack one yourself. Nintendo Age forum member Silius chose the latter. But instead of portability or a modern design, he chose to preserve his console’s original beauty. Behold!

nintendo nes console with LCD screen by silius

As you can see, Silius’ custom console looks just like any other NES when “closed”. It even loads cartridges the old way. But then the console can be opened up to reveal an LCD screen inside. Silius console also has built-in speakers so it really needs is a power outlet. Silius did make it so its screen can be turned off, which would come in handy if he ever wants to connect the NES to a TV. Here’s a brief demo of the console:

It’s not as ambitious as Ben Heck’s ultimate console hack, but it’s a nice homage to one of the best gaming systems ever made.

Plush Arcade Cabinet: Arcadean Knight

ThinkGeek has released what may be the only arcade cabinet that the kids of tomorrow will be able to touch. He’s called Tomo, an Arcadean – an anthropomorphic arcade cabinet – that should please kids while making their elders weep for the old days. Why he doesn’t have a coin sidekick is beyond me.

tomo arcadean plush arcade cabinet by thinkgeekTomo not only has a joystick, a button and even a power cord, he also makes retro arcade sound effects when you shake him. Thankfully you can remove his sound box if the nostalgia becomes too much for you.

You can order Tomo from ThinkGeek for $13 (USD). The folks at the geek store are implying that they may make more Arcadeans if Tomo sells well. Never mind ThinkGeek, we know you’ll just replace Tomo with Consoleans before long. Don’t rub it in.

Dad Hacks Donkey Kong So Daughter Can Play as the Damsel and Save Mario

What would you do if you introduced your daughter to Donkey Kong and she was disappointed that she couldn’t be the female and save Mario? Would you just say, oh well, that’s the way it is? Well, Mike Mika wanted his daughter to have the game her way. So he hacked the game.

donkey kong pauline edition

His daughter wanted to play as a princess in Donkey Kong, like she did in Super Mario Bros. 2. So, like Kirk with the Kobayashi Maru, Mike changed the program and put together a patch that let his daughter play as Pauline, the damsel who is no longer in distress. In fact, she has a mallet, and she knows how to use it.

Check out the video. Mike is one great dad.

Hyperkin RetroN 4 to Play Original NES, SNES, Genesis, and GBA Carts via HDMI

Fans of classic gaming systems will be happy to hear that HyperKin is working on their latest retro console, and this one has a couple of new tricks up its nonexistent sleeves.

hyperkin retron 4a

The latest system, dubbed the RetroN 4, leverages today’s technologies to bring improvements to retro gaming. Like the RetroN 3 before it, the new console can play NES, SNES and Genesis cartridges, but can also play Game Boy Advance carts too. It can also handle both NTSC and PAL formats. But the big upgrades come in the form of Bluetooth wireless controllers, and an HDMI output for use on today’s HDTVs.

In addition, the new console will sport an interface called “Perdana,” which is expected to provide capabilities like button reassignment and “other features” to be announced. Personally, I’m hoping for some sort of ability to save game states or run cheat modes, but those aren’t confirmed.

The RetroN 4 is expected to be revealed at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00am Central.

Atari 2600 Portable is Woodier than its Ancestor

We’ve featured our fair share of portable Atari 2600 mods, but I don’t think any of those can hold a candle to this one. Speaking of candles, the future owner of this one of a kind handheld should keep it away from even the tiniest of flames, because its case is made entirely out of wood.

The mod was made by eBay seller retro_mood. Inside the varnished wooden case is a 3.5″ TFT screen, a 700mAh battery that should last up to 3 hours per charge, two player controls – one of which was made out of a PlayStation analog stick – and the guts of an NTSC Atari 2600 console. Retro_mood also added digital volume and brightness controls as well as composite video and mono audio outputs. Perhaps most importantly for a handheld, this Atari 2600 has a pause button! Its weight – 600g (approx. 1.3lbs) – borders on iPad territory though, so minus points for portability there.

Ultimately though, retro_mood intends this handheld to reside not in the deep pockets of a collector. He’s selling it for a cool $1,240 (USD) on eBay. Money doesn’t grow on trees, but neither do wooden cases.

The Executive Keyboard Belongs in The Hudsucker Proxy

I’ve always thought that the computer keyboards you can buy at most stores are pretty dull. I’m really surprised that there aren’t more really custom keyboards available given the fact that each person really has their own style. Me, I’ve always been a fan of the Art Deco styles of the 1920s through 1940s, so this keyboard is perfect for me.

The Executive Keyboard was custom made by Richard “Datamancer” Nagy, and it is quite a lovely build. It’s got a sleek black and silver theme, along with round keys reminiscent of mechanical typewriters from days gone by. Though these keys are made with modern day mechanical switches, rated for millions of presses each.

No detail was spared in the construction of this keyboard, from the black leatherette background behind the keys to the perfectly retro-styled typeface on the keys themselves.

Of course, all of these good looks and elegant craftsmanship come at a price – the Executive Keyboard sells for $750(USD) – making it truly for executive geeks only.

Wii & Wii U Pro Controller: Everything But the Kitchen Sink

While the Wii and Wii U are all about funky modern controllers, sometimes you just can’t beat a good old school gamepad or joystick to get your Virtual Console on. This third-party controller for Nintendo’s current-gen consoles looks like it fills the bill perfectly.

wii pro controller u 1

The Pro Controller U works with the Nintendo Wii, Wii U, and even Android devices as a bonus. It offers a built-in classic gamepad, complete with a proper D-Pad, surrounded by a pair of analog sticks, shoulder buttons and triggers for games that require them.

In addition, the Pro Controller U works as a Wii motion controller, and has built in speakers and vibration feedback as well. The wireless controller offers a rechargeable battery pack as well.

You can grab this all-in-one controller for your Wii and Wii U over at ThinkGeek for $39.99(USD). While it does sound pretty awesome, you might want to check out the decidedly mixed reviews of what looks to be the same unit over at GameStop, before you plunk down your hard-earned cash.

Game Boy Color External Hard Drive: 8 Trillion Bit Handheld

The Game Boy Color can only store a few megabytes of data in its memory, but these carcasses of the handheld contain nothing but a 1TB hard drive. They can probably store all of the games that have ever been released for all of Nintendo’s handhelds and still have some room left for your homework.

Jason Roach sells these colorful external hard drives on his Etsy shop 8-Bit Memory. He usually fits them with a 1TB USB 3.0 Western Digital hard drive, but he says you can also ask for a 500GB drive. He can also look for other colors if you don’t want the ones he’s offering. If you want to go older school, then get the Game Boy hard drive. It also has a 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive. All of the hard drives are powered via USB so you won’t need an adapter for them.
