Arcade Mash-up Prints Confuse and Amuse

Say the words Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Centipede, Galaga or Joust, and you’ve just named some of my all-time favorite arcade games. So when I stumbled onto these unusual variants of these 1980s classics, I was at once befuddled and at the same time intrigued.

donkey dug

These mash-up prints were created by 9times1minus1 (also known as “eight”) over on Etsy, and they envision the characters from iconic arcade games invading other games. So for instance, there’s Donkey Dug, which puts Pooka, Fygar and Dig Dug on Donkey Kong’s girders.

joust bros

Then, there’s Joust Bros., which is the perfect synthesis of Joust and Mario Bros. I always thought those levels looked similar, and flinging turtles into the lava pit below makes just about as much sense as ostriches anyhow.

donkey burger

Other mashups include Donkey Burger (DK x BurgerTime), and the oddly named, but somehow appealing Ms. Paciaga (Ms. Pac-Man x Galaga).

ms paciaga

While I’m not sure that I would have wanted to play all of these games, I have to say that some of them look like they would have worked just fine as 9times1minus1 envisions them. When you really think about it, did the plots and characters in any 1980s video game really make that much sense? Why couldn’t Jumpman have been a chef on a quest to make the perfect hamburger? I would have ponied up a quarter to try my hand at that.

If you’d like to line your walls with these unusual video games, they’re available for $25(USD) each as 16×20 digital prints over on Etsy.

Final Fantasy III Monopoly: Go and Collect 200 Gil

I was happy enough to see Final Fantasy III getting some love with the dialog box magnets, but it seems I haven’t been looking hard enough. Here’s an even more impressive homage, a cross stitched Final Fantasy III Monopoly board, complete with game tokens.

final fantasy iii monopoly

The board was made by Sprite Stitch forum member jadely for the forum’s Big Swap, where members exchange handmade gifts with each other. I wonder if they accept stick figures drawn on tissue paper. That’s my specialty. The board also comes with community cards and deeds, although they’re printed on paper and not cross stitched. Also of note is that the characters are also the properties. I’m not sure any of them would like the idea of being sold and owned. I’d buy Interceptor in a heartbeat though.

Head to the Sprite Stitch forums to see the original images, and while you’re there check out the other Monopoly board that jadely’s been working on, a Nintendo-themed one.

Rare Star Wars Poster Looks Stupid, Worth Thousands

There are a lot of rare Star Wars collectibles that are worth money, but usually they are toys and costumes and the like. Some obscure items like this 1978 promotional poster you see here are also worth a lot for some reason. The poster shows C-3PO and R2-D2 carrying musical instruments. It basically looks ridiculous, but despite that, it’s expected to sell for between $5,000 and $8,000 at auction.

star wars concertThe poster was created to promote The Star Wars Symphonic Suite by composer John Williams. So why is it worth so much? Well, it’s rare to begin with and it is also signed by George Lucas. Plus it was designed by John Alvin, who made some of the best movie posters ever made like Blade Runner, E.T., and Gremlins for example.

If you have the money and like the poster, now is your chance to own it. Head on over to Paul Fraser Collectibles for more information on the auction.

Secret Passage Floor Decal Will Take You to a World of Pain if You Try to Enter

From the store that brought us the Zelda fireplace art comes another fake retro graphic. Add 18 square inches of mystery to your floor with the  Secret Passage decal. It’s also perfect for hiding actual secret passages. No one would think of looking under it right? Except for me. *cue thunderstorm and diabolical laughter*

Although a handful of old video games did portray stairs this way – it was either this or a miniature set of stairs – I’m not sure if these particular graphics are also from Zelda.

You can order the Secret Passage floor decal from James Bit Originals for $35 (USD). I actually saw a rug version of this idea, though I don’t know if that one’s for sale or if it’s even real.

This Could Be the World’s First Computer Generated Animation [Video]

It’s almost impossible to pin down when and where the first computer animation was created, given several companies and research facilities were dabbling in the new medium at the same time. But AT&T—formerly Bell Labs—and others believe this simple clip dating back to 1963 could indeed be the world’s first CG animation. More »

Final Fantasy III Dialog Box Magnets: Refrigerator Relics

Relive the glory days of the Final Fantasy series with these Final Fantasy III (aka Final Fantasy VI) dialog box magnets. Those were the days when characters were interesting and not annoying, when you knew who your actual enemy was and were not treated to surprise boss switcheroos, when you could understand what the hell anyone was talking about. Dammit Square what happened?

final fantasy iii vi dialog box magnet

The magnets are made of acrylic, and although it looks like it at first glance, the text is not printed on paper. It’s actually etched into the blue surface coat, and there’s even a drop shadow on each character, just like in the game. You can choose to buy magnets that contain actual dialogue from the game or send your own quotes. If you choose the former you’ll see that the line breaks are exactly how they appear in the game.

New Earthworm Jim title may happen eventually

If you’re like me, then you probably loved Earthworm Jim back in the ’90s. The first two games in the series were great, but sadly, Earthworm Jim 3D and Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy weren’t anything to write home about, and aside from a few recent re-releases, we haven’t heard much from the gun-wielding worm since. But according to designer David Perry, we may have another Earthworm Jim game to look forward to in the future, so long as the original team can be pulled together again to have another go at the series.

The problem, Perry tells Eurogamer, is that most of the original team is off doing all sorts of things these days, and they’re all very successful at whatever it is they’re doing. The desire to make a new game in the Earthworm Jim series is there though, Perry says, suggesting that a new Earthworm Jim game is not a matter of if but rather when. “We have our own little discussion group on Facebook,” he said. “We’ve been having this discussion: when will this happen? When could we do it? What would make sense?

“It’s one of those things that, no one’s got the time right now. I’m sure it’s going to happen, I just can’t tell you exactly when.”

So there you have it folks: a new Earthworm Jim game could very well become a reality, but first all of these guys need to get together in the same room and actually get to work. Obviously, this may take a while, considering that all of these people have jobs they need to be doing, but at least a lot of the people who worked on the original Earthworm Jim titles want to see this get off the ground eventually.

Oh, and Perry also reassures that this new Earthworm Jim game will indeed be 2D, so no worries there.

No Technology Can Improve on an ASCII Photobooth [Past Perfect]

If you thought the novelty photobooth idea was just a recent trend, think again. Back in 1976—the year before Atari released its ground-breaking 2600 console—the company was hawking these fantastic Compugraph Foto booths that created retroriffic ASCII portraits of people. More »

Pac-Man Arcade Candy Turns Dot Gobblers into Gobbl-ees

Retro arcade fans with a sweet tooth will want to pop on over to the NeatoShop and grab a box of these Pac-Man arcade candies, created in the shape of everyone’s favorite yellow dot-gobbling puck-man.

pac man candy

Each portion of Pac-Man candy sells for $3.95(USD) and comes packaged in a tiny cardboard arcade machine, loaded with about 30 tasty Pac-candies. Despite the fact that they are yellow, they’re actually strawberry flavored, and not lemon or banana as you might think.

And if you prefer the flavor or power pellets and ghosts, don’t forget about the original Pac-Man candies from a few years back.
