BlackBerry Z10 spotted at retailers prior to BB10 event

BlackBerry Z10 spotted at retailers prior to BB10 event

Looks like retailers might be jumping the gun a bit on the about-to-be-announced BlackBerry Z10 smartphone. Twitter user @bandozer spotted one at a UK Phones4U retailer and managed to snap a pic (after the break), saying that “it looks and feels good,” while our own tipster forwarded us the above image that came from another store. Looks like the only thing that’ll stop the numerous leaks is when RIM finally announces the darned thing — sometime in the next hour or two.

BlackBerry Z10 To Debut In Black

blackberry z10 BlackBerry Z10 To Debut In BlackWe are having the hunch that the BlackBerry Z10 will come in black and white color flavors. Our speculations are based on previous leaked images of the phone appearing in black and white. But if a recent report from Engadget is true, then it looks like we’ll only be seeing the black version of the phone today. According to the publication, their “well-placed friend” is telling them that RIM’s BlackBerry Z10 will only debut in black. Folks who are eager to see the Z10 in white will have to wait until February 15th. Anyway, we will soon find out if the report is true. We’re currently waiting for the event to start, so keep it here in Ubergizmo for the latest BlackBerry Z10 news.

What RIM Needs to Prove with BlackBerry 10

RIM’s day of reckoning is here. Today, at 10am EST, the once-mighty Canadian company will officially unveil its new BlackBerry 10 operating system, along with new hardware. It’s a chance at rebirth, reinvention, and getting out from under its walking corpse reputation. But for that to happen, RIM needs to prove it’s back on the right track. More »

BlackBerry Z10 tipped to come only in black at launch, white edition to arrive February 15th

We’ve had a note in from a well-placed friend who says that RIM’s BlackBerry Z10 will only debut in Henry Ford’s favorite color: black. Those looking for a white-tinted fruity smartphone will apparently have to wait until February 15th before being able to splash their hard-earned. Either way, as we’re but a few short minutes away from Thorsten Heins’ big moment, we won’t have long to wait for confirmation.

Does RIM even realize what went wrong?

BlackBerry 10 makes its long-anticipated debut today, but the official hype machine is off to a stumbling start with execs from RIM struggling to deal with criticisms around delays and how the iPhone changed the smartphone market. In a pair of interviews on different BBC programs this morning, RIM Europe managing director Stephen Bates faced understandable questions about where previous BlackBerry devices stumbled, as well as being asked where RIM has learned from Apple’s device. All didn’t go to plan, however.

In a radio interview with BBC Radio 5′s Nicky Campbell, Bates refused to address questions around the impact of the iPhone, preferring to list BlackBerry 10′s work/life balance functionality and position the OS as the platform RIM needs for the next decade. In a separate interview with BBC Breakfast [region-locked to the UK], Bates faced a similar repeated question – this time, “what went wrong” in RIM’s past to bring it from, as the executive himself argued, creating the smartphone segment to having a minority share – but again pushed the party line rather than addressing the criticisms head-on.

Neither interview paints either RIM or the BBC interviewers in a particularly positive light. For Bates, the reluctance to address what are legitimate talking points – the role of the iPhone and the missteps RIM has made in the past – suggests the BlackBerry maker may not in fact know, or understand, how the marketplace changed. As for the interviewers, the aggressive and challenging tone failed to achieve anything significant in terms of real insight into BlackBerry 10.

“There’s little to show RIM understands it’s the underdog option”

Nonetheless, while there will be more opportunities for the smartphone buying public to get information about the new platform, RIM’s opportunities to show it understands the ways the ecosystem it is in has changed are dwindling. Android and iOS monopolize the lion’s share – 92-percent – of the global smartphone market, and for all rivals like Microsoft and RIM insist that carriers, retailers, and consumers want a “third contender” there’s little to show RIM has figured out how it will sell itself as that underdog option.

That’s not to say the BlackBerry 10 OS is either without merit or without its differentiators. As the company itself explained to us back in October 2012, one of the key elements of the new platform is its ability to satisfy both work and personal use, while keeping a firewall of sorts between the two. There, arguably, is RIM’s biggest education from the rise of the iPhone and from watching the smartphone market as a whole: that people now carry their phones at all times, and want them to do all things, and while BlackBerry devices of yesterday may have been fit for one half of that, they fell short in the other.

Clarity of mission is all the more important when you consider that BlackBerry 10′s success probably isn’t going to be based on its strengths as a technical platform, but instead the halo of context RIM builds around it. We’ve already seen OSes with great potential rise and fall – MeeGo is a solid example, offering a far better user-experience than Nokia had with Symbian or even Windows Phone, but still eventually sidelined – because, in part, the companies behind them lacked the clarity of message that would convince consumers and businesses that they were worthy of consideration.

For RIM, with Microsoft directly aiming for its corporate audience with Windows Phone, and the mass market already addicted to the wide array of Android devices and the consistency and “halo brand” of the iPhone, it’s time to work hard on rebuilding perceived relevance. Trying to ignore the landscape of the mobile industry today – no matter how aggressive the interviewer – doesn’t distract potential customers to the reality of the market, it only leaves you looking like you don’t know where you went wrong.

SlashGear will be at RIM’s BlackBerry 10 launch today, bringing you the highlights from the new platform.

Ahead of its big day on January 30, RIM has updated BlackBerry World with all sorts of music, movie, and TV show content for users to purchase. As far as digital content storefronts go, BlackBerry World is about what you’d expect – market-priced content sorted by category available to those in certain locations. You can check out the content here.

BlackBerry World is the App Store/Play Store equivalent for RIM customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Previously, the storefront was called BlackBerry App World, with the name change taking place late last year. Those running older software may still see the old name on their device rather than BB World.

Media content includes a variety of music, movies, and TV shows with a range of prices that are typical of what you’ll find on other services. A quick look through World shows music that ranges from $0.99 to about $1.50, as well as albums that float between the $7.99 and $9.99 price points. Most TV shows are priced at $1.99 an episode, while movies can be nabbed for an average of $4.99.

In addition to the video and music offerings, there’s also themes, games, and app downloads. Games include many of the familiar offerings, including Angry Birds, with prices ranging from free to $1.99. Apps are likewise available in prices ranging from free to as high as $4.99, which many of the familiar favorites there, including Facebook and LinkedIn.

BlackBerry World storefront goes live with music, TV shows and movies

Heads up, content lovers: you can now get your fix over at BlackBerry World, which has been updated with music, movies and TV shows for your perusal. As expected, prices are in line with industry norms, ranging from $8 to $12 for albums, and between $0.99 and $1.49 for individual tracks. Meanwhile, television episodes can be had for $1.99 a pop — perfect if you happened to miss the awkward season premiere of Archer — and there’s variable pricing for movies, depending on whether you rent or buy. You’ll find previews of all music tracks, but movies are limited to the trailers and TV shows lack free samples. Nonetheless, if you’re feeling bold and live within one of the supported regions, take a moment to check out the overhauled BlackBerry World. It’s certainly a nice appetizer of what’s to come.
