SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: January 25, 2013

Welcome to Friday evening everyone. Today more BlackBerry Z10 images leaked out, while IDC is saying that Samsung is in the lead with strong demand for its smartphones. OUYA is making a few tweaks to its controller before the Android-based games console launches, and we’re sorry to say that tomorrow it becomes illegal to unlock your phone without permission from your carrier. If you were planning to unlock your phone, then you better do it tonight.

It seems that Microsoft is working on a new, cheaper lineup of Surface tablets to add to the current Surface family, while Verizon has sold $1.9 billion worth of its spectrum to competitor AT&T. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said today that since her company doesn’t make mobile hardware, software, or run social networks, that puts Yahoo in a position for “strong partnerships,” while Best Buy is offering MacBook Airs at a $200 discount in a promotion that only lasts through tomorrow.

It appears that Twitter’s new video service Vine is having some issues importing Facebook contacts, while Google has placed a rather strict non-disclosure agreement on those attending its Glass Foundry events at the end of the month. Samsung has announced the new rough and tumble Galaxy Xcover 2, and we heard that the new Super Smash Bros. titles for Wii U and 3DS will be on display at E3 2013 later this year. Anonymous hackers have been jailed for their involvement in the Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal attacks, and the recently-released YouTube Capture has been updated with support for 1080p.

The French government has replaced the famous Twitter hashtag with what it’s calling “sharp-words,” while the Alcatel One Touch Evo 7 has appeared in a new FCC filing. Rockstar reportedly threatened to sue over a show called L.A. Noir – a claim publisher Take-Two denies – while RIM announced that it will air a BlackBerry 10 ad during the Super Bowl. Google reassured users today, saying it won’t give the government access to your Gmail account without a court order, and Sony announced that its Red and Blue PS3s will be coming to the UK next month. THQ’s corporate offices shut down today, and the Halo Zero LED messenger bag is netting some attention on Kickstarter. Finally tonight, Vincent Nguyen delivers his review of the Drobo Mini. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the weekend folks!

BlackBerry 10 Tablets Confirmed By RIM

playbook blacbkerry 10 confirmed BlackBerry 10 Tablets Confirmed By RIM

We’ve been hearing a remarkable amount of BlackBerry 10 rumors ever since RIM announced its major press event taking place on January 30. We’ve seen a number of BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry X10 articles, but we haven’t heard much in regards any BlackBerry 10 tablets. RIM manufactured its PlayBook tablet, so we should expect a BlackBerry 10 tablet, right?

RIM to air first-ever Super Bowl ad for BlackBerry 10

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched programs on television, and if you really want to get your name out there, then you would buy a 30-second commercial spot during the big game. While the Super Bowl may be the only reason that sports fans clamber around the TV, the commercials also happen to be a big thing as well. It turns out that RIM will be airing a BlackBerry 10 ad during the Super Bowl to promote the new platform.

blackberry_10_dev_alpha_b_hands-on_32-580x42712

The ad will air just days after RIM officially launches BlackBerry 10 on January 30 — the Super Bowl takes place on February 3, so while the new platform will already be out and about, RIM will be attempting to garner the attentions of potential BlackBerry users around the country. The 30-second spot is estimated to cost around $3.8 million.

If the viewership for this year’s Super Bowl passes last year’s record, RIM may get over 111 million viewers to see its new advertisement, and while a majority of them may run off to the kitchen for refreshments and snacks, we guarantee a lot of people will still be in front of the TV to witness BlackBerry 10.

It’s rumored that RIM will launch several devices at its launch event in New York City on January 30, including the heavily-leaked Z10 smartphone. Prospective carriers that may carry the new BlackBerry devices include T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T in the US, with Virgin Mobile in Canada and Vodafone in the UK.

Research in Motion will be forking out for a Super Bowl spot (which averages $3.8 million this year), as part of an effort to get the word out about BlackBerry 10. Let’s just hope it’s not shown the exact moment 40 million people head to the fridge. A little presser can be found past the break.

January 25, 2013 – Today Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM)confirms that BlackBerry 10, its new mobile computing platform that will power the next generation of smartphones and tablets, will be featured in a commercial during Super Bowl XLVII.

This confirmation kicks-off a week of worldwide launch activity for RIM’s BlackBerry 10 platform, along with the first two devices to run on the new platform. These activities are part of a broad integrated marketing campaign to support the global rollout of BlackBerry 10. In addition to the 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl that will air in both the U.S. and Canada, BlackBerry will be integrated into a number of pre- and post-game on-site, digital and social activities, including real time engagement with BlackBerry social fans on Facebook and Twitter, as well as extending and amplifying exposure and fan engagement through Promoted Posts and Sponsored Story ads.

“A Super Bowl commercial, is a great opportunity to show the re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented BlackBerry to tens of millions of consumers on the largest advertising stage of the year,” said Frank Boulben, Chief Marketing Officer, Research In Motion. “BlackBerry has 30 million social media fans, and we’re looking forward to continuing to encourage them and all NFL football fans to see the power of BlackBerry 10 for themselves.”

BlackBerry Z10 press images leak out

We’ve already seen plenty of leaked shots of RIM‘s upcoming BlackBerry Z10 handset, but this is the first time that we’re seeing what look to be official press images of the device. There’s not a lot of new information here, but we finally get to see RIM’s new device in proper lighting, even if the images are only renders.

BBZfLJJCQAAp8Fv

The leak comes from the EVLeaks Twitter account, who posted the leaked press shots yesterday. While we’ll still keep a skeptical mind (as with any rumor and leak), these press photos look like the real deal, and EVLeaks has been quite reputable in the past with leaked shots, so we’re pretty certain these will be the ones hitting the front pages of carrier websites.

What’s even more revealing about these “official” press photos is that this is most likely what the final product will look like when RIM officially unveils the new phone come January 30. In the past, we’ve certainly seen our fair share of leaked photos, and while those may have just been prototypes, these press shots reveal the final product.

Overall, we definitely like the design. It’s nothing too special by any means, but it’s sleek and stealthy, and it definitely has that BlackBerry feel to it. Since BlackBerry 10 seems to be a competent platform, we can’t see a reason why the Z10 wouldn’t be a success for RIM, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see later this month.

Lenovo And RIM To Strike A Deal?

lenovo rim Lenovo And RIM To Strike A Deal?RIM (Research in Motion) did seem to be dragging its feet through the doldrums in recent years, especially when their market share was steadily chipped away by the modern day interpretation of the smartphone – full touchscreen and all, but things do seem to be looking up with the impending release of the BlackBerry 10 operating system that is set to happen at the end of this month, along with its fair share of hardware to go along with the software, of course. Well, CEO Thorsten Heins might have given away more than he wanted by dropping hints that RIM could consider selling off its hardware division, or perhaps to license its BlackBerry OS to third parties.

According to Bloomberg, Lenovo’s Chief Financial Officer Wong Wai mentioned in an interview, “We are looking at all opportunities — RIM and many others…We’ll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders.”

Do you think that RIM’s synergy with Lenovo would be able to produce some revolutionary devices down the road? The possibilities are always endless, as it really depends on the creative team behind it.

Global mobile phone shipments breached 1.6 billion units in 2012, Samsung, Apple and Nokia still on top

Global mobile phone shipments breached 16 billion units in 2012, Samsung, Apple and Nokia still on top

A charger on every nightstand and a phone in every pocket — it could be a presidential slogan, but it’s really just reality. According to research from Strategy Analytics, a staggering 1.6 billion mobile phones were shipped (not sold) globally in 2012, and 700 million of them were smartphones. Samsung, Nokia and Apple, in that order, were the biggest movers of handsets, though the latter two change places when it comes to smartphones — Espoo only shipped 35 million to Cupertino’s 135, while Samsung topped the trio at 213 million devices shipped.

Surprising? Hardly — smartphone sales climbed throughout 2012, and the aforementioned manufacturers have been kings of the category since last February. The numbers are telling though — according to ABI Research, Apple saw less growth in 2012 than the previous year, and may hit a plateau in market share in 2013. Samsung, on the other hand, may have some room to grow — capturing 34 percent of total smartphone shipments in Q4 with over 60 million smartphones moved. Apple nabbed 24.5% of the market with 47.8 million shipped iPhones, while Nokia and RIM took up the tail of the quarter with 86.3 and 6.9 million shipped devices, respectively. Statistic lover? You’ll find full numbers (plus a little analyst speculation) in a trio of press releases after the break.

Strategy Analytics: Global Mobile Phone Shipments Reach 1.6 Billion Units in 2012

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments grew a modest 2 percent annually to reach 1.6 billion units in 2012. Samsung was the star performer, accounting for 1 in 4 of all mobile phones shipped worldwide last year.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “Ongoing macroeconomic challenges in mature markets like North America and Western Europe, tighter operator upgrade policies, and shifting consumer tastes were among the key reasons why global mobile phone shipments grew just 2 percent annually to reach 1.6 billion units in 2012. Fuelled by robust demand for its popular Galaxy models, Samsung was the star performer, shipping a record 396.5 million mobile phones worldwide and capturing 25 percent marketshare to solidify its first-place lead. However, Samsung’s total volumes for the year fell just short of the 400-million threshold.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Nokia’s global mobile phone shipments fell 20 percent from 417.1 million units in 2011 to 335.6 million in 2012. Nokia faced tough competition from Samsung in developing markets like China, while Apple and others ramped up the pressure in developed regions such as Western Europe. Nokia’s dual-SIM feature phones, Asha touchphones and Lumia handsets have been performing well, but this was not enough to offset a slump in demand for the company’s aging Symbian smartphone platform last year.”

Linda Sui, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, “Apple shipped a record 135.8 million mobile phones worldwide in 2012. Apple delivered 46 percent annual growth last year, which was bolstered by solid demand in North America and Asia. Apple’s launch of the iPhone 5 in Q4 2012 was a success as volumes ramped up in dozens of countries worldwide, but negative media coverage of the model’s new integrated maps service and supply chain challenges cast a slight shadow over the launch.”

Other findings from the research include:
o. ZTE captured 5 percent share of the global mobile phone market in 2012, as its shipments fell minus 8 percent from 2011, partly because of heightened competition in core markets like China and Western Europe from rivals such as Coolpad and Samsung.

Strategy Analytics: Global Smartphone Shipments Reach a Record 700 Million Units in 2012

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 43 percent annually to reach a record 700 million units in 2012. Samsung was the star performer, capturing 30 percent marketshare worldwide and extending its lead over Apple and Nokia.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually from 157.0 million units in Q4 2011 to 217.0 million in Q4 2012. Global smartphone shipments for the full year reached a record 700.1 million units in 2012, increasing robustly from 490.5 million units in 2011. Global shipment growth slowed from 64 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2012 as penetration of smartphones began to mature in developed regions such as North America and Western Europe.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Samsung shipped a record 213.0 million smartphones worldwide and captured 30 percent marketshare in 2012. This was the largest number of units ever shipped by a smartphone vendor in a single year, beating Nokia’s previous all-time record when it shipped 100.1 million units during 2010. Despite tough competition in stores and courtrooms, Samsung continued to deliver numerous hit models, from the high-end Galaxy Note2 phablet to the mass-market Galaxy Y. Apple grew a healthy 46 percent annually and shipped 135.8 million smartphones worldwide for 19 percent marketshare in 2012, broadly flat from the 19 percent level recorded in 2011. Apple had a strong year in developed regions like North America, but this was offset partly by its limited presence in high-growth emerging markets such as Africa.”

Linda Sui, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, “Samsung and Apple together accounted for half of all smartphones shipped worldwide in 2012. Large marketing budgets, extensive distribution channels and attractive product portfolios have enabled Samsung and Apple to tighten their grip on the smartphone industry. The growth of Samsung and Apple has continued to impact Nokia. Nokia retained its position as the world’s third largest smartphone vendor for full-year 2012, but its global marketshare has dropped sharply from 16 percent to five percent during the past year. Nokia’s Windows Phone portfolio has improved significantly in recent months, with new models like the Lumia 920, but we believe the vendor still lacks a true hero model in its range that can be considered an Apple iPhone or Samsung S3 killer.”

Smartphone Pressure Mounts for Samsung and Apple Exiting a Strong Q4 2012, According to ABI Research

SINGAPORE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nearly 196 million smartphones and 451 million handsets were shipped during Q4 2012, according to the latest estimates from marketing intelligence firm ABI Research. This brings 2012 annual totals to 653 million smartphone and 1.6 billion handset shipments, representing a 36% and 2% YoY growth rate respectively. Smartphones accounted for 43% of all handset shipments in Q4, which pushed smartphones to 41% of all shipments in 2012.

Samsung retained its lead position overall by shipping 106 million handsets of which 60 million were smartphones in Q4 and capturing 31% of total smartphone shipments. In 2012 Samsung grew its handset shipments by 21.6% and its smartphone shipments by 123.8%. Despite missing most analyst estimates in Q4, Apple grew its smartphone shipment share to 24.5%, up from 16.4% in Q3. Apple shipped 47.8 million iPhones in Q4 bringing its 2012 annual total to 135.8 million. Apple’s 2012 annual shipment growth declined from 96% in 2011 to 46% in 2012.

“It is clear that the iPhone’s hyper-growth has ended, and ABI Research believes that Apple’s market share will peak in 2013 at 22%,” says mobile devices senior analyst Michael Morgan. “Unless Apple is willing to trade iPhone margins for low cost iPhone shipments, Apple’s handset market share will become dependent on customer loyalty.”

Looking at the rest of the pack, Nokia shipped 86.3 million handsets and 6.6 million smartphones in Q4 while RIM’s shipments of smartphones declined to 6.9 million. ZTE had an excellent Q4 with 20.7 million handset shipments and 11.2 million smartphone shipments.

“Samsung and Apple are both under pressure to maintain their market lead as less costly smartphones gain momentum entering 2013,” notes senior practice director Jeff Orr. “Technology optimization choices and a diverse handset portfolio are critical decisions over the next 6 to 9 months to come out ahead.”

These findings are part of ABI Research’s Mobile Handset Markets Database, which includes files detailing smartphone and mobile handset shipments, forecasts, and market share.

Lenovo CFO says ‘RIM and many others’ are on the table as possible deals

Lenovo CFO says 'RIM and many others' are on the table as possible deals

This one is expectedly drawing a big no comment from RIM, but Bloomberg is reporting today that Lenovo has at least considered the possibility of acquiring the company or forming some other type of strategic alliance. That word comes straight from Lenovo’s Chief Financial Officer, Wong Wai Ming, who said at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos that “we are looking at all opportunities — RIM and many others,” adding that, “we’ll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders.” That interest has apparently extended as far as speaking to RIM and its bankers about various possible arrangements, but it’s not clear when that happened or how far along the talks went. He also unsurprisingly didn’t offer any indication as to when Lenovo might make a decision on the matter. As Bloomberg notes, such a deal would also require clearing a number of regulatory hurdles, including a review by the Canadian government.

Lenovo looking into RIM acquisition to bolster mobile offerings

Lenovo has been slowly creeping its way into the mobile market, and we saw a few of the things that the company is working on at CES a couple of weeks ago, including the IdeaPhone K900, which looks to take on flagship handsets from other companies. However, it looks like Lenovo is wanting to step in the mobile market for good, because the company is thinking about possible acquisition strategies to bolster their mobile offerings.

lenovo_ideaphone_k900_hands-on_sg_0-580x407

One of the companies that Lenovo is eyeing is RIM, which reviewed its strategic options last year after they started losing more and more market share to Apple and Android. Ever since, the company has been the target for acquisition rumors. Currently, though, Lenovo is considering all options, and have looked into RIM, as well as others, according to Lenovo’s Chief Financial Officer Wong Wai Ming.

Ming says that Lenovo has dedicated team working on possible acquisitions, and that they have spoken to RIM about possible partnerships or other strategic ventures. However, Ming left it at that, and declined to say much more, and RIM also declined to comment on the possible acquisition by Lenovo.

RIM is just about to launch its all new platform, BlackBerry 10, and while some critics have already thrown in the towel for RIM, hopefuls are waiting patiently to see if the new operating system and new smartphones from the Canadian-based company will move mountains. Come January 30, we’ll officially see what RIM is up to.
