Netflix Spotted For Blackberry 10

netflix bb10 Netflix Spotted For Blackberry 10One of the reasons people choose the mobile operating systems that they do involves many factors, such as hardware of the phone running the operating system, features, user-friendliness, number of apps and etc. Well if you were thinking about picking up Blackberry 10 in 2013, you might be interested to learn that it looks like Netflix could be making its way onto RIM’s upcoming mobile operating system. This is thanks to @BlackberryScoop who posted a couple of screenshots of what appears to be Netflix running on Blackberry 10. Word has it that RIM is trying to get Netflix onto Blackberry 10 and @BlackberryScoop is said to be helping to test the beta. At the moment he claims that the beta is still rather buggy and drains more battery than necessary, but hopefully RIM will be able to sort this out in time for Blackberry 10’s launch on the 30th of January 2013.

Synchronoss buys NewBay from RIM for $55.5 million

Synchronoss Technologies has acquired Research in Motion‘s NewBay cloud mobile content service. The deal was sealed for the sum total of $55.5 million in cash, and was closed just a few days ago. By nabbing NewBay, Synchronoss hopes to dominate the world of cloud mobile content services while increasing its international presence.

synchronos

Specifically, Synchronoss hopes to give itself a boost in the international market via NewBay. Although NewBay has offices in Seattle, it is based out of Ireland. By acquiring the service, Synchronoss has gained access to NewBay’s myriad of Europe-based customers, such as Swisscom and Vodafone. These are on top of its already existing US customer base, which includes Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, among others.

Synchronoss’s Chief Executive Officer Stephen G. Waldis offered this statement. “By adding NewBay’s technology assets and millions of subscribers, this transaction further establishes Synchronoss as the clear leader in providing cloud based mobile content services for mobile operators around the world. By combining our strengths, Synchronoss will deliver the most comprehensive, scalable and secure cloud platform, and we will significantly expand our early market share leadership position.”

The service works by allowing customers to store, access, and share content with mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones. The addition of NewBay will give Synchronoss access to NewBay’s various offerings, including its copyright, antivirus, and protection from illicit content capabilities. Synchronoss plans to provide expanded financial details of its NewBay acquisition during its 2012 Q4 financial conference call.

BlackBerry 10 slides leak video chat and screen sharing via BBM

With the final release of BlackBerry 10 coming up in a special event scheduled for the 30th of January, it’s no wonder we’re seeing a blast of interest in everything RIM – today’s leak being a set of slides showing BBM boosts and a new task manager. This set of slides shows that BlackBerry Messenger is set to be updated in a big way with both full-on video chat and screen sharing for all. Also on the docket is a fully upgraded task manager for those of you hoping to keep your tasks in order – notes and all.

This update shows the new task manager as an element entitled “BlackBerry Remember.” Here you’ll be able to sync with Outlook for email and work directly with Evernote right out of the box. This information has been shown in the slides here and now as well as in the original gold SDK provided by RIM quite recently.

With BBM you’ll soon be able to share much more intuitively, too. You’ll be able to capture a photo, tap one of your vast collection of apps to share outright – Picasa, Facebook, Flickr, and more veing shown right here in slide form, add comments, and share. You can share to one person or to your newly forge BBM Group if you wish. You’ll be able to “seamlessly” transfer between video chat and screen sharing as well – great for directions for businesses.

With BlackBerry Remember you’re going to be able to capture and keep clean all of your notes from all different directions. You can “turn ideas into action”, so say the leaked slides here, and sync with a variety of services. Microsoft Outlook is, of course, first on the list of connections, and Evernote has been tipped more than once as well.

‘Leaked’ BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

Top dog at RIM Thorsten Heins heavily implied that video chat would be added to BBM when BlackBerry 10 showed up, and now possible confirmation of the feature has come from what are thought to be leaked presentation slides. Originating on CrackBerry’s forums, the images have been taken down on various sites, leading us to believe they’re legit and that strongly worded requests have led to their removal. Not only do they suggest BBM video chat is coming to BB10, but also the ability to screen share during these video calls. Another slide details a new task manager for the OS called “BlackBerry Remember,” which can sync with Outlook and — based on its description and what was uncovered in the gold SDK — may include Evernote integration. We’ve contacted RIM for comment and will update you with any response, but until then, take a look at the slide above and the pair hidden after the break to assess for yourself whether they’re the real deal.

Update: Here’s RIM’s statement, which doesn’t really come as much of a surprise:

“We understand that there is a lot of excitement for BlackBerry 10. We will launch the platform on January 30th and until then we won’t comment on speculation.”

BlackBerry X10 QWERTY touch smartphone leaked in single white-case photo

There appears to be a whole new double-down in the BlackBerry 10 universe this week with a leaked image of what’s being called the BlackBerry X10. This device sits in a photo near the BlackBerry Z10 all-touch smartphone as well as the BlackBerry Dev Alpha C smartphone given to 1,500 developers earlier this year. This photo is fairly clear, but of course completely unofficial and unconfirmed by RIM.

QWERTY-e1356359692723

What we’re seeing here is a device that’s extremely similar in styling to the HTC device revealed in 2011 that went by the name ChaCha – have a peek at our HTC ChaCha review from June of 2011 to have a peek. We’ve also got a photo of the ChaCha below – look similar to you? Both devices are said to be working with full QWERTY physical keyboard action as well as a full touchscreen interface – this being great for the new workings of BlackBerry 10.

It’s not everyday that we see a leak so substantial as the one we’re seeing today in a single photo – and what with previous leaks of the other two devices we’re seeing here, substantiation is a near-fix. This should very well be the image that allows you to see the imminent future of the BlackBerry 10 platform, at least at the start. Both QWERTY and full-touch are onboard and it’s about to get wild!

You’ll be able to see the full experience starting on the 30th of January when we head to the official BlackBerry 10 event. This event will have us getting hands-on time with the final market build of the software as well as our first official glimpses as the first wave of BlackBerry 10 hardware from RIM. Stick with SlashGear for all your up-to-the-second hands-on in-person coverage from here until then – and beyond!

RIM announces Android Port-A-Thon for January 2013

655 blackberry 10 RIM announces Android Port A Thon for January 2013We know that RIM’s CMO promised that Blackberry 10 would launch with at least 70,000 apps, although with RIM recently announcing their Android Port-A-Thon, we’re guessing that some of those 70,000 apps will be apps ported over from Google’s Android platform. That’s not a bad thing though because Android numbers more than half a million apps the last time we checked, and if more popular Android apps get ported onto Blackberry 10, the more people might be willing to check out RIM’s latest mobile operating system.

RIM has announced that the Android Port-A-Thon will be taking place on the 11th of January 2013, and it seems that they are eager to reward developers with make successful ports. According to their website (source link below), a successfully ported and approved app will net the developer $100 with a maximum of 20 apps per vendor. Developers who submit apps will also be eligible to participate in drawing in which they will be able to win a Dev Alpha device. For interested developers, hit up the source link below for the details, and for the layman what this means is that (hopefully) by the time Blackberry 10 launches, there will be a ton of cool apps you will be able to check out.

RIM rumored to lower Blackberry 7 device prices with the launch of Blackberry 10

devices 602x274 RIM rumored to lower Blackberry 7 device prices with the launch of Blackberry 10With the launch of Blackberry 10 on the 30th of January in 2013 and the subsequent Blackberry 10 devices that will launch after it, will customers still turn towards RIM’s Blackberry 7 handsets? The good news is that if you are worried that Blackberry 10 phones are going to be expensive, but you love the Blackberry platform anyway, word on the street (via Digitimes) has it RIM will be lowering the prices of Blackberry 7 handsets to help expand their market share. Given that Blackberry has a pretty strong base in emerging markets like Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, we guess RIM is hoping that by lowering the prices, they will be able to capture even more market share from said regions. Perhaps they might even start to capture some market share in the US and Europe where they aren’t doing as well compared to the competition like iOS and Android.

Is This BlackBerry’s QWERTY Savior?

The hole RIM has found itself in is deep, dark, and doused in despair. And as much as the company’s gambling on its new BB10 platform to pull itself up, an operating system’s only as good as the phones running it. So take a good, hard look at this supposed BlackBerry N-Series device. It could be RIM’s best shot at survival. More »

BlackBerry 10 keyboard gets a video walkthrough

We’re quickly approaching BlackBerry 10‘s scheduled launch, and as we go along, we’re slowly learning new details about the operating system and the devices it’ll be featured on. Today we’re getting a closer look at BlackBerry 10′s keyboard thanks to a video demo by RIM’s Vivek Bhardwaj. In the brief demo, Bhardwaj shows off a number of new features, starting right off with the look of BlackBerry 10′s keyboard.

blackberry10logo

Bhardwaj says that it was important for RIM to match the look of traditional BlackBerry keyboards, and looking at the video, it would appear the company has. Bhardwaj points out the white font against the black keys, and says that each key is “kind of maximized edge-to-edge.” He also points to the fact that next word suggestions will be in your own vocabulary, saying “the actual predictions themselves are in-key, and you simply swipe to actually type.”

It seems that RIM is attempting to do a lot with inference with the BlackBerry 10 keyboard, as evidenced by the fact that the system will actually predict where spaces should be inserted. Therefore, should you miss the space key, the system will be able to correct the error for you. BlackBerry 10 will also try to infer when you need to switch languages to type a different word, switching back when you’re ready to begin typing in your native language again.

All in all, the BlackBerry 10 keyboard sounds like a nice piece of software. The OS as a whole has some pretty impressive features, so RIM should be launching a solid system next year. The question is whether or not consumers, most of which have been abandoning BlackBerry lately, will bite. Are you interested in giving BlackBerry 10 a spin when it launches?
