Forget That Lame Teaser: RIM’s L-Series BlackBerry 10 Phone Gets Captured On Video (Again)

l-series1

RIM posted a mostly toothless smartphone teaser to its BlackBerry 10 landing page earlier this week, but really, what BlackBerry fan could be appeased by that? Thankfully, the folks at Tinhte.vn (the Vietnamese gadget site that came to prominence when it posted early video and benchmarks of the 3rd gen iPad) got their hands on the all-touch L-Series BB10 smartphone and gave it the full photo and video treatment.

Assuming its design is final (if not, it’s very recent — the device sports the recently-renamed BlackBerry World app), the L-Series carries over many of the same aesthetic choices seen in the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha B device. The front speaker and microphone placement appears to be the same as on the tester device, as do the locations of the BlackBerry logo and the front-facing camera. Meanwhile, a quick meander through the gallery reveals that the L-Series comes equipped with a removable 1,800 mAh battery, and well as the usual collection of microUSB, micro-HDMI, and microSD slots.

Overall, the device doesn’t look too bad — it seems to have remained very understated in its design language (which is probably to be expected considering RIM’s enterprise leanings), and the rounded corners make the L-Series awfully reminiscent of that early BlackBerry London image that begun making the rounds over a year ago. Personally, the looks by themselves aren’t enough to make me want to buy one of things, but BlackBerry 10 certainly has potential and that could make all the difference.

Anyway, that’s enough out of me. I’ve included some of the juicier images below, and you can check out the rest of the photos here and here.

RIM offers first glimpse of BlackBerry 10 hardware

We know that RIM will be launching BlackBerry 10 in January 30, 2013. At least that’s the plan for now, but that could easily change. In any case, RIM has quietly teased us with a vague glimpse at an upcoming BlackBerry 10 smartphone on their website. It barely peeks out from the shadows, but we’re offered a look of that gives us a bit more information on what to look forward to.

From the teaser image, we can see that the phone will have some sort of textured backing with the camera placed in the upper-left corner. Volume buttons seem to also be visible in the image, which are placed the right side of the handset, and what looks to be a power button at the top will be placed in the middle, just like the HTC DROID DNA.

Overall, we’d say that if you’re expecting something similar to the alpha hardware we saw in the past, that’s probably a good guess, but a few changes will definitely be taking place. We expect a lot of changes in both the hardware and software to occur once January 30 rolls around, but BlackBerry seems to have most of the major elements in place.

BlackBerry 10 certainly has potential, and with all of the marketing and campaigning that they’ve done to promote the new platform, we’re guessing launch day will be a big day for RIM, but hopefully BlackBerry 10 will have what it takes to take on Windows Phone 8 for the third-place spot in market share.

BBM Voice brings WiFi calling to BlackBerry

RIM has released BlackBerry Messenger 7 (BBM 7) complete with BBM Voice support, adding WiFi calling to the popular messaging service. The new app, headed to the BlackBerry App World today, currently works with BlackBerry OS 6 devices and above, and as well as allowing for simple switching between text messages and voice calls, adds several other new features.

There are sixteen new emoticons, shown below, as well as BBM upgrade notifications within the app itself, allowing users to easily switch to each new version. Finally, there’s BBID sync, pulling in the BBM profile, Groups, and Contacts, and linking them to each user’s BlackBerry ID.

It’s BBM Voice which will get the most attention, however, RIM’s attempt to keep the messaging system competitive with rivals such as Apple’s iMessage and Google’s Gchat. A single voice button in the top right hand corner of each text conversation begins a call, directly from the chat itself, rather than forcing the user to go through the contacts app.

RIM says BlackBerry 5 devices will get BBM Voice functionality in the new year, and the calls are free over WiFi. It may take 24hrs or so for the new app to arrive in your local version of the App World, so keep checking.

RIM Launches BlackBerry 10 Ready Program

With the BlackBerry 10 launch just around the corner, RIM is pitching in a new program for its enterprise customers. Called BlackBerry 10 Ready, the program aims to woo business customers into trying BlackBerry 10 by offering a free BlackBerry 10 smartphone on top of a free online training. RIM is even offering an option to trade up existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server licenses in exchange for its new BlackBerry 10 OS. This means that companies with BES licenses can make the switch to BlackBerry 10 on a one for one basis for free.

“Starting in January 2013 through to December 31, 2013, Research In Motion (RIM) will be offering customers who purchase new BlackBerry 0 smartphones, the ability to trade up their existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server licenses on a one for one basis for free. The new license trade up will allow customers to secure and manage their BlackBerry 10 smartphones. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server License Trade Up online tool will be available in January 2013, and will be subject to customers accepting the terms of the Trade Up,” RIM said.

Facebook for BlackBerry v3.3 now integrates BBM

Facebook for BlackBerry v33 now integrates BBM

It’s a red letter day for BlackBerry-owning Facebookers, as version 3.3 of the platform’s native app has arrived. BBM has been woven deep into the update, enabling you to initiate chats and find friends using your pin contacts. Of course, if you do that, you might find yourself friending too many people who share the minutiae of their lives — so the Zuck has also added easy un-friending to the mix as well. You can snag the update from the BlackBerry App World, which we’ve thoughtfully added for you down at the source link.

Facebook for BlackBerry updated with new look, features

RIM has updated the Facebook for BlackBerry app to version 3.3, which includes a new look and a variety of new features. The changes are designed to improve the use of Facebook on BlackBerry devices while allowing users to more seamlessly blend the social network with BBM. The app is available now from BlackBerry World.

First up is BlackBerry Messenger integration, which allows users to find their Messenger friends and initiate a chat via Facebook. If you’re keen to find out which Facebook friends are also using BlackBerry Messenger, you can share your PIN via your Facebook wall. Users can then invite BBM-using friends on their Facebook to join them on BlackBerry Messenger.

Unfriending Facebook friends is easier now, as well, with the new app version allowing users to unfriend via Facebook for BlackBerry. Overall, this combination of new features and BlackBerry Messenger integration allows BB users to combine the best of both worlds, maximizing their BlackBerry Messenger and Facebook accounts while merging the best features from both together.

As for the new look, you’ll find revamped icons and other goodies. Version 3.3 of Facebook for BlackBerry allows users to view images faster and at a higher resolution than previously supported. BB users can toggle between full-size and thumbnail views of photos, and can now download them to the BlackBerry handset for later use.

These are the 106 passwords you can’t use with Blackberry 10

Blackberry used to be (and probably still is for some) the choice of companies and governments due to its secure nature, and come Blackberry 10 RIM is hoping that security will remain a feature that the company is known for. In any case it seems that according to a document spotted within the Blackberry 10 platform, RIM has listed about 106 passwords in which users are not allowed to use to protect the content of their devices, with passwords like “123456”, “12345678”, and “123abc” taking the top 3 spots respectively. It also seems that this list can be updated at any time, which means that it will allow RIM to stay ahead of easily guessed passwords to help keep their platform and devices as secure as possible. In any case if you’re curious as to what the rest of the passwords are on the list, you can view the list in its entirety after the break. (more…)

RIM to launch BBM Money in Indonesia, allows the sending of money through BBM

It looks like RIM is hoping to expand the capabilities of its BBM platform beyond mere text messaging, and over in Indonesia the Canadian company has announced that they will be launching BBM Money. In case the name itself wasn’t obvious or didn’t give away any clues, BBM Money is RIM’s expansion of its BBM platform which will now allow BBM users to send other BBM users money, making it a pretty useful and convenient tool to conduct transactions on the go. The money sent to users can then be withdrawn via bank cash machines which sounds like a pretty straightforward solution. (more…)

BlackBerry Messenger Money app set to launch in Indonesia

RIM has given the official word that it will be adding a financial feature to its BlackBerry Messenger App called “Money.” The upcoming feature will allow BBM users to transfer funds from their phone. It’s slated for release in Indonesia first, with the only timeline given being that it’ll happen “shortly,” with other locations to follow.

Word that RIM has such a feature planned has been circulating for awhile, but this is the first time any official confirmation has been given. When visiting Jakarta several weeks ago, the company’s CEO Thorsten Heins hinted at this feature, saying that BlackBerry Messenger is as strong of a platform for financial transactions as it is for communication. RIM’s Managing Director of South Asia Operations Hastings Singh then offered BBC this statement in an interview.

“Indonesia is very important for RIM. It is a huge market for us … So we are offering a new innovation – BBM Money which will be launched in Indonesia – first in the world – shortly. It is a peer-to-peer transfer service that anyone with a Blackberry phone can use to transfer funds to someone else with a Blackberry phone.”

BlackBerry has been losing ground in the market, with government agencies dropping it in favor of more popular mobile operating systems, including the NTSB, while consumers largely select either Android or the iPhone. Despite its trouble battling against Android and iOS, BlackBerry is still massively popular in Indonesia, where it has over 50-percent of the marketshare. There’s no info on when Money will be available in Indonesia and beyond, but perhaps we’ll know more once BB10 launches next year.

If Tech Companies Made Holiday Party Invitations, They Would Look Like This

Our friends at Wired had a fun and clever idea: what would the holiday party invitations of tech companies look like? They dreamt up some scenarios and poked fun of all the tendencies of the companies. It’s hilarious. The Facebook party will have your mom coming! The Twitter hashtagged holiday party won’t show Instagram friends coming. And of course the Samsung party invite looks exactly like Apple’s. But my favorite? RIM’s. Check out all the funnyman invitations here. [Wired] More »
