BlackBerry PlayBook 2.1 update goes live with SMS, portrait email

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 with Bold 9930

RIM’s attention around its QNX-based platforms might revolve around BlackBerry 10 as of late, but don’t think that it’s leaving BlackBerry PlayBook users behind. A PlayBook 2.1 update is rolling out today that fills in some of the gaps left by 2.0 earlier this year. Habitual messagers can now start SMS text messages directly from the tablet when tethered through BlackBerry Bridge; they also get overdue support for a portrait view in email, calendars and contacts. If communication isn’t the cornerstone of your life, you’ll still find a few niceties such as Android App Player support for the camera and in-app purchases, device encryption that extends to personal data and wireless printing beyond the local network. For now, you’ll have to be an owner of the original, WiFi-only PlayBook to leap on the 2.1 train today — those who sprang for the usually carrier-bound PlayBook 4G LTE should get their upgrade within a month.

ComScore: iPhone grew to 34 percent US share in a pre-iPhone 5 world, Android still on top at 52 percent

ComScore iPhone moved up to 34 percent US share in a preiPhone 5 world, Android remained on top at 52 percent

Apple is all too used to the rumor cycle affecting its sales: the company just saw a dip in sequential iPhone shipments this spring as customers waited for what would ultimately become the iPhone 5. If you believe ComScore’s US smartphone market share estimates, though, Apple wasn’t the worse for wear this August. While the iPhone was in the doldrums this spring, it jumped almost a whole point versus an already positive July to hit 34.3 percent; we’re wondering if last-minute discounts played a part in keeping iPhone 4S sales healthy. Google didn’t have much to fear and saw Android climb to 52.6 percent, even if its ascent wasn’t as rapid as that of its Bay Area neighbor. RIM took the brunt of the losses and dipped to just 8.3 percent of the market in what’s increasingly a two-horse race, although Microsoft’s Windows Phone held its ground at 3.6 percent.

The wider US cellphone market tells a familiar story, with Samsung on top. There’s signs that the narrative is very close to changing, however: LG and Apple are now close enough, at one point’s difference, that Apple could seize second place by the time we see ComScore’s figures for September. Before interpreting Apple’s performance as some sign of a wider reversal of fortune, just remember that most of its challenges are on the world stage. There’s no guarantee that the Android-focused markets beyond American borders have been as receptive to iPhone price drops and updates.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform gaining on RIM over in Europe

It is unfortunate but both Microsoft and RIM’s mobile platforms are not where they would like them to be right now. Sure, both companies would love to be among the top dogs, iOS and Android, and we guess we will have to see how the latest iterations of either company’s efforts will pay off. However it looks like as far as the European market is concerned, Microsoft might be gaining a fair bit of ground on RIM. In a report released recently by Kantar, it was revealed that Microsoft is gaining fast on RIM’s market share thanks to low-end Windows Phone devices like the Nokia 610, raising Microsoft’s market share by 1.2%, giving them a 5% market share in total.

RIM on the other hand has seen their market share decrease by 5.8%, putting them at 6.4% which means that Microsoft certainly has the ability to play catchup with RIM at the very least. We also have to agree with Kantar’s global consumer insight director, Dominic Sunnebo who estimates that Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices will have no problem pushing past RIM and assuming the third place in Europe’s smartphone market where, as expected, both iOS and Android reign supreme. This certainly casts some doubt on RIM’s CEO Thorsten Heins’ statement about beating Windows Phone and taking the third place. We guess we will have to wait until 2013 to see how RIM performs, which is also when RIM’s Blackberry 10 platform and accompanying devices are expected to hit the market.

BlackBerry Aristo could be flagship RIM device

Every smartphone company needs a flagship model, otherwise how the heck is it supposed to be able to stamp its mark on the market? Well, it seems that leaked hardware specifications of the BlackBerry Aristo have hit the Internet, where it will be part of the BlackBerry 10 dance that is happening real soon. Of course, this will have nothing to do with the BlackBerry L-Series, but rather, will be part of the BlackBerry A-Series that touts a 4.65” OCTA Glass OLED display with a resolution count of 720 x 1280 pixels. The OCTA segment of the display was developed by Samsung, and it is really slim, allowing the BlackBerry Aristo to lay claim to the mantle of being the thinnest BlackBerry to date at 8.85mm.

Underneath the hood, you will find a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Krait processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory which can be further augmented by a microSD memory card slot. Too bad the battery cannot be removed, although carrying a charge of 2,800mAh, it should last quite the distance even for a heavy user. Two cameras are present – an 8-megapixel shooter at the back, and a 2-megapixel one in front. Other features include WiFi, microUSB, NFC, DLNA and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. I wonder how much this potential flagship is going to cost if the leaked specifications prove to be correct.

Rogers LTE hits 18 new regions, delivers speedy data in Saskatoon

Rogers promised that October 1st would be a grand day for its LTE expansion plans, and we’re now learning that it might have been underpromising to overdeliver later. The carrier just flicked the 4G switch for 18 cities and regions, or eight more territories than it had promised just two weeks ago. Most of the coverage still focuses on the southern tip of Ontario, including London, the Oshawa area and RIM’s hometown of Waterloo, but there’s a much more trans-Canada bent to the official deployment. Western cities like Saskatoon and Victoria now fit into Rogers’ LTE map beyond a previously announced Edmonton, while the Quebec rollout is going past Quebec City to include Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières. All told, the one day of growth is enough to supply Rogers LTE to almost 60 percent of Canada’s population — a convenient figure when one of the year’s more important LTE smartphones just became available less than two weeks prior.

[Thanks, Jon]

BlackBerry 10 Aristo specs leak out

It wasn’t too long ago that we were introduced to the the BlackBerry 10 L-series thanks to a leak, and today, another leak is giving us our first look at the A-series. One of the phones in the BlackBerry 10 A-Series has been named “Aristo” and judging from the specs list below, which was uncovered by Rapid Berry, it looks be packing a lot of power under the hood. If the spec list for the Aristo is anything to go on, then it appears that the A-series will be RIM’s high-end line of BlackBerry 10 handsets.

The Aristo uses a Qualcomm APQ8064 Krait quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, which should prove to be a pretty powerful processor. On the front, we have an OCTA Glass OLED 4.65-inch touch screen running at 1280×720 resolution, which naturally means 720p high definition. The OCTA screen, which was developed by Samsung, is what allows the Aristo to be the thinnest BlackBerry device yet, coming in at just 8.85mm thick. Not too bad.

We’ve got a welcome 2GB of RAM running under hood, and when coupled with the processor, the Aristo should be capable of moving pretty fast. There’s also 16GB of internal flash storage to take advantage of, which is expanded through the use of a 16GB microSD card. As far as connectivity is concerned, you’ve got microUSB, mini HDMI, WiFi direct, NFC, DLNA, and Bluetooth 4.0 at your disposal, so connecting and sharing shouldn’t ever be an issue.

There’s a beefy 2,800mAh sealed battery to power the whole thing, so no, it sadly can’t be removed. We’ve also got an 8MP camera on the back, along with a 2MP camera on the front – standard fare these days, but it’s clear that RIM wanted to bring spectacular specifications to other areas of the phone. The specs listed here are certainly getting us excited for next year’s launch of BlackBerry 10, and it looks like RIM is serious about getting back into the thick of it, at least as far as offering a range of smartphone choices is concerned. Stay tuned.

BlackBerry London specifications leaked

Are you looking forward to just what RIM (Research In Motion) has in store for the masses with their BlackBerry 10 platform, especially the L-Series of devices which comprise of the London, Lisbon and Laguna? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, here is a little bit of good news for you – leaked specifications for the BlackBerry London have arrived, where it is tipped to come with a TI OMAP4 processor underneath its hood, but then again, you might want to take this bit of news with a relatively large grain of salt since it is not an official piece of information by RIM at this point in time.

The BlackBerry London does seem to be equipped with a 4.2” display at 1280 x 768 resolution, sport an 8-megapixel shooter with Full HD video recording capability, carry 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot to boot. There is also Wi-Fi support, DLNA, microUSB and Bluetooth 2.1. Not only that, “Face Detect” for phone calls was also listed, piquing our interest in the BlackBerry London even further. What about you?

BlackBerry Laguna for Verizon specs leaked

There is nothing quite like a hardware specifications leak to drum up additional interest on a particular device, and it would be on par with that of an image leak, of course. We do know that RIM just afforded themselves a little bit of breathing room with the kind of optimism that surrounds the BlackBerry 10 operating system which is due to be released soon, and one of the more recent leaks would be the BlackBerry Laguna that is headed for Verizon Wireless, where it does seem to be the CDMA version of the BlackBerry London.

The leaked specifications sheet point out that the BlackBerry Laguna will come with a 4.2” display with a rather non-standard 1280 x 768 resolution, which will be accompanied by a rather impressive pixel density of 355ppi. Underneath the hood, you will find a dual-core Krait processor, 1GB RAM, LTE support, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n with mobile hot-spot and Wi-Fi direct, NFC and a microHDMI port. An 8-megapixel camera that does Full HD video is also thrown into the mix, in addition to 16GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot to boot. Drooling already?

BlackBerry 10 Lseries tutorial videos surface online, give a literal peek at the future video

Those of us who’ve used a BlackBerry PlayBook will be familiar with the inevitable first-boot tutorials showing how to navigate the swipe-driven interface before we’re let loose. Thanks to a series of demonstration videos leaked by BlackBerryItalia, it’s apparent that we won’t escape that educational process on BlackBerry 10 devices, either. The four clips show the basics of what we know the gesture experience will be like on full-touch L-series phones, including the signature BlackBerry Peek to check notifications and the unified inbox. Anyone looking for a direct clue as to what production BlackBerry 10 hardware will entail might be frustrated, mind you — the rendered phone appears to be a placeholder rather than the L-series or a Dev Alpha B, and the device name is censored in an attempt to protect the source. That said, the clips provide a very straightforward explanation of the new interface concept and give us one more indication that RIM is closer to launch.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 28, 2012

It’s Friday once again folks, with most of you already enjoying the weekend. Today, the iPhone 5 launched in 22 additional regions around the world, setting Apple’s plan to have it in over 100 countries by the end of the year on track. Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for the sad state of Apple Maps today (recommending some other Maps apps in the process), and we took a closer look at his words in a new column. Even more surprising is the fact that the iOS App Store now features a download page specifically for other Maps applications.

All of you Apple dissenters will definitely want to watch the iPhone 5 get destroyed by some powerful lasers, and Sharp reassured today that it’s making plenty of iPhone 5 screens, which are rumored to be the bottleneck on production. Today we got a closer look at the vibrator inside the iPhone 5, and learned that it costs less than $1 to charge your iPhone for an entire year. Microsoft has assured that it has tested Windows 8 thoroughly ahead of next month’s launch, and it seems that Kodak will soon be dropping out of the inkjet printer business.

Google now lets YouTube creators re-download their movies in their original format, and the FCC has approved an auction to reclaim broadcast TV spectrum. HP has launched Open webOS 1.0, and Amazon gave us a little video detailing the technology behind the Kindle Paperwhite. Good news for all of you Call of Duty fans: Modern Warfare 3 is free-to-play on Steam this weekend, and there are rumors floating around that HP will soon be jumping back into the mobile market.

Microsoft was spotted lamenting the lack of highly skilled technology workers today, and Notch is refusing to certify Minecraft for Windows 8, despite Microsoft’s requests. For the first time ever, Instagram has beat Twitter when it comes to daily mobile users, Sony has invested $640 million into slowly dying camera company Olympus, and a new BlackBerry 10 video gives us our first look at RIM’s new QWERTY device. Finally tonight, Chris Davies takes an up-close look at RIM’s Q2 results, which were posted yesterday, while Chris Burns has a new review of the movie LOOPER, starring Bruce Willis and Jason Gordon-Levitt. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy your weekend everyone!
