Lazaridisbacked QuantumNano Centre opens tomorrow, aims to be a new Bell Labs

Mike Lazaridis may now have a considerably smaller role at RIM, but he’s isn’t exactly receding from the technology scene in the company’s hometown of Waterloo, Ontario. That’s no more evident than in the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre opening tomorrow on the University of Waterloo campus, a science and technology research center that not only bears his name but was built with $100 million of his money. As Lazaridis makes clear in an interview with Bloomberg, he’s also not modest about his ambitions for the center, noting that it is “absolutely” going to be the Bell Labs of the 21st century. Or, perhaps more specifically, a Bell Labs for quantum computing and nanotechnology, areas of research that Lazaridis says are key in order to “break through those barriers” of traditional computing. You can find the full interview and more details on the center itself at the links below.

Fan-made “Blackberry Love” commercial is certainly attention grabbing, but might not be entirely appropriate [NSFW]

While advertisements might not necessarily get you to buy the product, it puts the product and/or the company into your mind, thus creating awareness. While we’re not sure if this is how RIM might want to market themselves and their Blackberry devices, a fan has put together a commercial that well, will most certainly have no problems grabbing the attention of many. Called “Blackberry Love”, it is a very suggestive commercial and you probably should watch these with your headphones on and probably not at work, lest your boss thinks you’re up to no good. If you are the boss then by all means, go ahead! In the meantime what do you guys think? Do you think RIM should start making these sorts of edgy commercials to help grab the market’s attention, or do you think that this would be rather inappropriate for a company whose devices are sort of synonymous with working professionals?

Blackberry 10 L-Series smartphone teardown

We did catch some leaks of a photo as well as a rendering of the upcoming Blackberry 10 L-Series smartphone sometime this week, where this is one device that will roll off RIM’s production lines that will not come with their signature physical keyboard. Since the outside is pretty much set (although do bear in mind that what we have seen so far are most probably just prototypes, and the final release might veer off course – the degree greatly depends on test user input), why not take a gander at what lies underneath the hood instead?

What you see above could very well be part of the first collection of images of the Blackberry 10 L-Series smartphone’s innards, hailing from a Vietnamese Blackberry forum. It has so far confirmed the inclusion of a NFC antenna, in addition to a 1800mAh battery that ought to last a full day at best, a rather plasticky construction, and a dual-core processor. Presumably, you will be able to choose from black and white color options available, while the camera is said to come with burst mode capability in addition to video chat support.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 18, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, folks. Tomorrow morning, HTC will hold its long-awaited Windows Phone 8 event, and unsurprisingly, we received a fair bit of HTC news to report on today. HTC started things off today by teasing a new Windows Phone 8 handset for tomorrow’s event, keeping the details short and sweet. Looks like we’ll just have wait until tomorrow to find out more. The HTC Windows Phone 8X – also known as the HTC Accord – suffered another leak today, shortly before the phone is expected to be revealed in New York tomorrow.

Samsung today denied rumors that its Galaxy S IV will be launching in February 2013, and we found out that the LG Optimus G will be launching in the US by November. Speaking of the Optimus G, we went hands-on with its QSlide picture-in-picture feature today, and the iPad Mini was spotted in some leaked images today, suggesting that a launch may be coming up soon. Motorola announced the new RAZR i today, and we were right there to go hands-on with it, so be sure to have a look at that.

Apple’s new EarPods were the subject of a new iFixit teardown today, and the sales ban on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will stay in place for the time being, despite Samsung’s requests to have it lifted. AT&T has some new net neutrality worries today over its 3G FaceTime restrictions, and Twitter got a pretty big UI update on iPad today as well. Even though Nintendo won’t be offering standalone Wii U GamePads at launch, it assured prospective buyers that they can get replacements if their GamePad breaks (for a fee, naturally).

With iPhone 5 hype as high as its ever been, Apple’s stock price rose above $700 for the first time today, and McLaren unveiled its ultra-sleek P1 Supercar (if you buy one, can we take a ride?). ioSafe needs your help bringing its N2 fire and waterproof NAS to market, while RIM and Microsoft shook on a licensing deal that will give RIM access to Microsoft’s exFAT system. ZTE started teasing a new Windows Phone 8 handset and a Windows 8/Windows RT tablet in a rather strange way today, and 20th Century Fox struck a deal that will see 600 of its movies up on the Google Play Store. Finally tonight, we have a couple of interesting space and science stories for you: scientists are saying that warp drive may not be as unrealistic as it once seemed, and the Dark Energy Camera has returned its first images of deep space – prepare yourself, because they are amazing.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy the rest of your night, folks!

RIM and Microsoft strike up a licensing deal for exFAT

Struggling BlackBerry platform holder RIM announced today that it has reached a licensing deal with Microsoft, but instead of RIM licensing out its tech like CEO Thorsten Heins has suggested many times in the past, RIM is the one paying out the licensing fee this time around. The deal gives RIM access to Microsoft’s Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) technology, a system that allows for the easy transfer of large files between PCs and other devices like smartphones.

Microsoft said in a statement today that exFAT allows flash memory-based devices to handle files that are five times larger than the older FAT system could facilitate, and that RIM has licensed the system “for certain BlackBerry devices.” Neither company clarified which devices those are, but it seems safe to assume that the exFAT system will be present in the first BlackBerry 10 devices when they eventually arrive. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait for more details.

RIM actually enjoyed a rise in stock price after the announcement hit, but the company’s stock price continued fluctuating throughout the day, losing here and gaining there. Still, RIM finished the regular trading day up 2.28%, posting a $7.41 stock price at the closing bell. After hours trading see a bit of an increase over that closing amount as well, with RIM’s stock currently sitting at $7.45. It seems that shareholders view this as a step in the right direction for RIM, but will it be enough?

RIM will definitely need more than Microsoft’s exFAT system to get users excited about BlackBerry 10, but this is a good addition. Speaking of the beleaguered operating system, it’s still scheduled to launch early next year, after a number of delays that pushed it back from previous release dates. RIM has a lot riding on the hope that the launch of BlackBerry 10 will pull the company out of this rut, so here’s hoping that the OS is a beast when it finally arrives.

RIM bags license to use Microsoft’s exFAT file system

Microsoft has inked a deal with Research-In-Motion according to which, the BlackBerry maker will be able to make of use of Microsoft’s exFAT file system. The scope of the deal includes ‘certain BlackBerry devices’, which we are expecting to be upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices and not the older models.

The use of exFAT file system will essentially enable these ‘certain’ devices to be able to transfer data across devices, such as computers and tablets, in a more streamlined manner. As per the press release, “exFAT is a modern file system from Microsoft that facilitates large files for audiovisual media and enables seamless data portability and an easy interchange between desktop PCs and other electronic devices.”

RIM licenses Microsoft’s exFAT file system to stuff extra-large files into BlackBerry devices

BlackBerry 10 home screen

RIM has big ambitions for media on BlackBerry hardware — really big. Accordingly, it just reached a patent licensing deal with Microsoft that lets it use the exFAT file system on “certain BlackBerry devices.” We have a hunch that’s a reference to future BlackBerry 10 phones and tablets rather than retrofits of existing (and likely incapable) mobile gear. The move will let any devices that do recognize exFAT handle much larger files, such as long videos, in addition to streamlining transfers between computers and other gadgets. The conditions of the deal haven’t been given out, but we suspect RIM’s negotiations with Microsoft were on more voluntary terms than those faced by Android supporters.

BBM will be making its way onto Dev Alpha devices later this month

As some of you guys have probably surmised by now, BBM to RIM is probably one of the key features that sets their products apart from the competition, so much so that despite it being an acronym for Blackberry Messenger, it has been inducted into the Collins English Dictionary. This is why we are interested to see how Blackberry 10 will handle BBM and if there will be more functionality added to the popular messaging service to keep it up to date with RIM’s latest Blackberry 10 operating system.

For Blackberry loyalists out there, it seems that BBM will be making its way onto the Dev Alpha handset later this month. Spell-check is one of the features that users can expect in the final version and this update to the Dev Alpha handset will allow developers to start creating BBM-connected apps or games. We’re not sure what sort of cool ideas developers will be able to come up with for BBM integration, but it will be most interesting to see how this turns out. So, who’s looking forward to getting their hands on Blackberry 10 devices next year?

Another Blackberry 10 L-series photo has leaked online

Another day, another Blackberry 10 L-series leak – alright perhaps not, but it looks like another L-series photo has been leaked. Unfortunately these leaks still show serial numbers on them which could suggest that they are merely test units and might not be the final design, but based on what we’ve seen, if these are merely test units, we can only imagine that the final version should look pretty good. In fact personally I wouldn’t mind using the version pictured in the photo above, what say you? Anyway the photo also reveals a battery door which means that Blackberry 10 hopefuls can rest assured in knowing that unlike the iPhone and certain Android devices, the battery is removable (read: replaceable). There also appears to be NFC which we guess isn’t too surprising. Either way with Blackberry Jam Americas coming up, hopefully RIM will have more details or photos to share, so stay tuned!
