It’s Basel time again that means we’re going to be seeing some amazing watches coming out of Switzerland that cost more than an office block in downtown Detroit. Romain Jerome Moon Orbiter Tourbillon: A Bit of Space Travel & Moon Dust on Your Wrist

Tourbillon horological machines are quite spectacular at times, and the Swiss manufacturer Romain Jerome has made some incredible ones. Their latest flying tourbillon watch features a unique design with tremendous depth, and looks gorgeous.

The Moon Orbiter Tourbillon was designed as a tribute to space. In fact, they’ve used melted down parts from the Apollo 11 shuttle and moon dust in the dial. The case measures 49mm wide, 45mm long and 20mm thick. There are lugs mounted on pneumatic cylinders to ensure that it’s comfortable. The case holds the Caliber RJ300-A-Mechanical self-winding movement watch system. Time is displayed on the right and the flying tourbillon on the left.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to mortgage your house to get this watch, because there will only be 25 made and each will sell for approximately $115,000(USD).

A Watch Inspired By–And Made From–The Apollo 11 Moon Landing

A Watch Inspired By--And Made From--The Apollo 11 Moon Landing

Romain Jerome has become known as the watchmaker that incorporates exotic materials into its timepieces, from moon dust, to metal from the Statue of Liberty, to volcanic ash. And while it’s still embracing that role with the new Moon Orbiter, the watch actually puts more focus on the highly engineered flying tourbillon exposed at the 9 o’clock position than it does its little slice of history.

Romain Jerome’s Spacecraft Watch Looks Like It’s From Another Galaxy

Taking a page from Tokyo Flash’s bewildering design playbook, Romain Jerome’s latest watch—the Spacecraft—takes an unconventional approach to displaying the time. But thankfully it’s not as difficult as deciphering the array of dials and switches on a NASA-designed craft. More »

Back to the Future Watch Built Like a DeLorean

Think you’re a real Back To The Future fan? Here’s a memento that I bet you don’t have. This DeLorean DNA Watch by Romain Jerome is made from the same stainless steel used to make a DeLorean DMC-12, just like the one that Doc Brown and Marty McFuy drove in the movies.

The strap is even inspired by the DeLorean’s interior, made from upholstered leather and anthracite grey stitching like the seats in the car. Unfortunately, these watches are limited to only 81 pieces. Why they didn’t make 88, I have no idea. These babies will cost you a cool $15,900(USD). So you’ll need to get a future sports almanac and come back to make some money before you can afford one.

It’s a pretty sweet looking watch. Marty would approve. It’s too bad I don’t have a spare 15 grand and an actual DeLorean to go with it.

Romain Jerome Pac-Man Watch Will Gobble up Your Money

So you just sold your entire videogame collection and you’re swimming in money. You already bought the Space Invaders wristwatch, but you’re still Scrooge McDuck! What to do? I suggest you add the official Pac-Man watch to your shopping list.

Romain Jerome – the same company who made the Space Invaders watch – teamed up with Namco to make four ever so slightly different Pac-Man watch designs each limited to just 20 pieces. I’m not sure why they didn’t just make 80 of the one above, because the other three variants all look inferior to it on account of having fewer Pac-Man characters. But I guess if all of them have parts made of “steel fused with parts of the Apollo 11″ and “low oxidation silver fused with moon rocks”, 8-bit icons are just a quirky bonus.

The watches will be exclusively launched at the Colette store in Paris starting September 3, followed by a wider availability on September 10. Each watch will be sold for $17,900 (USD). Wakka-wakka-WHAT?!?

Hands On With Romain Jerome’s Octopus Steampunk Dive Watch

Romain-Jerome-Octopus-2012-watch-5

Here is a high-end dive watch to consider if you like that Captain Nemo look. It is called the Octopus, and is from avant garde Swiss watch brand Romain Jerome (RJ). Those familiar with the Romain Jerome Titanic DNA collection of watches will recognize the styling of this new Octopus diver.

The number 8 plays throughout the piece. There’s a unique octopus engraving on the back of the case, 888 feet of water resistance, and they’ll sell only 888 pieces in the limited edition. There are even eight special screws. One feature we love is the “suction cup” style inner part of the rubber strap. Decidedly strange looking, Romain Jerome knows that they are designing and producing polarizing products. People with a strong sense that their watch needs to say something about themselves tend to find watches like this appealing. The RJ Octopus will come in a few styles and each contains a Swiss automatic mechanical movement. You can check out my deeper look over here or just save up your pennies to buy this $10K piece.

Liberty DNA: The Watch Made out of Bits from the Statue of Liberty

There are watches and there are timepieces, and this has to be one of the most unique watches that I’ve every seen. This Romain Jerome watch isn’t the first watch that uses something famous in its makeup, their Iceland Volcano watch among others, but it’s definitely an interesting way to showcase your national pride.

Romain Jerome has used many exotic materials in its expensive watches. They’ve used volcanic ash, metal from the Titanic, and ever dinosaur bones. The Liberty-DNA watch uses particles from the actual Statue of Liberty, making it extremely limited. The watch also uses design elements to commemorate Lady Liberty, such as the face that’s reminiscent of her 12-pointed crown.

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, ther are only 125 of these watches being made, and if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it.
