Facebook to add hashtags, says sources

Hashtags have long been the domain of Twitter, where users utilize them alongside keywords to make searching and grouping easier. Over time, hashtags have become an embedded part of our vernacular, used as a part of speech to emphasize a particular aspect of the conversation, the speaker’s setting, and other such things. As such, it only makes sense that Facebook would add the hashtag to its own service.

facebook-icon

The information comes from individuals who are said to be familiar with the matter, according to the Wall Street Journal. The hashtag feature, once incorporated, will allow events and trends to be aggregated together by their shared topic, with users being able to click on the hashtag to see a list of statuses with the same marker.

While the hashtag is a staple of and most commonly associated with Twitter, it isn’t exclusive to that service, and can be found in use across the web, including on Facebook’s own Instagram, which makes it easier for photos to be sorted and discovered. As it currently stands, Facebook users can already tag certain things via “@.”

This comes at a time when Facebook is making some big changes and is competing against Twitter in a spectrum of areas, not the least of which is getting more advertisement dollars flowing its way. Recently, the social network updated its search engine, stated that public statuses will be searchable, and has pushed users to post more content publicly rather than with just their friends. Says the sources, this feature won’t roll out for awhile, so don’t expect to see it with the updated news feed.

Samsung Galaxy S IV: the rumor roundup

Samsung Galaxy S IV the rumor roundup

Compared to the sheer deluge of rumors surrounding last year’s Galaxy S III, talk about the Galaxy S IV has been relatively hushed. That’s partly owing to the contracted launch schedule — despite Samsung’s initial denials, the company is unveiling its next Android flagship almost two months before the GS3’s first birthday. There’s still been a fair share of rumormongering, however, and a picture is emerging of just what Samsung could unveil for yet another encore. Will the smartphone giant make a sharp break from tradition? Read past the break for a roundup of what to expect when Samsung hits the stage at Radio City Music Hall.

Alleged Galaxy S IV pictures and specs appear on Chinese website

We’re in countdown mode to Samsung‘s event in New York City tomorrow, during which the Korean company will launch its highly anticipated Galaxy S IV smartphone. The handset has been the source of numerous leaks and rumors (which you can check out in the Timeline after the jump), the latest of which has appeared just hours ahead of its unveiling on the Chinese forum it168.

Screenshot from 2013-03-13 23:47:20

The alleged Galaxy S IV featured in the leak, which you can see in the gallery below, is said to be a dual-SIM sample model. It first appeared on it168 earlier this week, but the latest round of images give a better look at the handset, including a handful of specs to go alongside the new batch of pictures.

The plastic backing on the phone features a crosshatched texture, while the home key is said to be embossed, with the entire unit measuring in at only 7.7mm in thickness and weighing 138 grams. The screen is an expected 4.99-inch full HD 1080p display, and inside there’s a reported 8-core 1.8GHz Exynos 5410 processor accompanied by 2GB of RAM.

The internal storage is a decent 16GB, and there’s the ever-present microSD slot for expansion. The battery has a 2600mAh capacity. Also revealed were a few software features, the most interesting of which is the ability to hover a finger over a portion of the display to pull up an S-pen stylus effect. Are the specs spot-on? We’ll find out tomorrow at Samsung’s event in NYC, which we’ll be covering live, so stay tuned!

Samsung shores up suppliers as 10m Galaxy S4 sales predicted

Samsung has learned from its supply chain hiccups and has steeled its manufacturing partners to meet expected Galaxy S4 demand, it’s said, amid analyst predictions of potentially 10m sales in month one. The Korean company would not be drawn on what preparations had been made, but “ased on checks we had with suppliers,” IBK Securities analyst Lee Seung-woo told Reuters, “Samsung has already done significant work to ensure smooth supply.”

gs3_teardown

Although some of the components and parts industry observers believe may cause Samsung headaches are perhaps to be expected – the eight-core processor some countries will get, or the rumored 5-inch, 1080p display – others are more mundane. Manufacturing cases of the Galaxy S4 itself is supposedly encountering issues, with “tight supply” according to HMC Investment and Securities analyst Greg Noh.

To be avoided are the stock bottlenecks that impacted Galaxy S III availability in 2012, and which some estimated cost Samsung 2m sales in the space of a month after it couldn’t meet demand. That was in part down to manufacturing issues that affected the “pebble blue” version of the phone, which forced Samsung to recall all of the cases and re-make them.

Anticipation around the new device has reached iPhone-esque levels of furore, though recent leaks have prompted questions as to how evolutionary versus revolutionary the new Galaxy might be. The design – criticized in the Galaxy S III for being too plasticky, versus the metal of the iPhone – looks set to be largely unchanged, with the S4 simply further closing the gap between the current model and the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II.

Even if that’s the case, and the changes are relatively marginal, analysts say that’s unlikely to have too detrimental an impact on Samsung’s overall sales. The strength of the Galaxy brand – and the company’s willingness to throw millions of dollars at reinforcing it through marketing – could well mean that, even if all expectations aren’t quite exceeded, that will have little to no effect on how many people want to actually buy one.

That given, Samsung can’t afford 2012′s stock issues; certainly if it wants to compete with the iPhone 5 in the US and abroad, where Apple’s flagship has been claiming the top spot in sales according to recent research. We’ll know exactly how appealing the Galaxy S4 is tomorrow, when SlashGear heads to NYC to bring back all the details from Samsung’s launch event.

More Galaxy S4 cases leak on eve of Samsung’s big reveal

Samsung’s big Galaxy S4 reveal is almost upon us, but that hasn’t stopped the steady drip of leaks which today includes a new set of cases for the flagship smartphone. The colorful covers, 98-percent trusted” from UK retailer MobileFun‘s source, are unbranded, but they do fit in with what leaks we’ve seen in the past week or so about the expected form-factor for the new handset.

S4 case

Whereas earlier indications pointed to a squared-off S4, stepping back to the aesthetic of the Galaxy S II in some ways, and away from the rounded edges of the Galaxy Note II, these shells – along with the latest batch of chatter – hint that won’t be the case. Instead, we’ve seen Samsung itself tease with a snippet of the Galaxy S4′s curvaceous shoulder, while more unofficial rumor-mill-grist have shown a phone that looks strikingly similar to Samsung’s existing range, plastic case and all.

S4 case 2

This new lot doesn’t stray too far from any of that, and in fact – though we’re expecting a bigger display, up to 5-inches from the 4.7-inch Galaxy S III – the general aesthetic is almost identical. The speaker and LED flash do seem to have shifted somewhat, though, with the flash now underneath the camera lens (believed to be a 13-megapixel shooter) and the speaker down near the bottom edge.

We’ll have to wait and see as to whether these accessories are legitimate or not, but there isn’t long to go before we know for sure. Samsung’s event kicks off at 7pm ET in New York City on Thursday, and SlashGear will be there to bring you all the news as it happens.

Samsung Galaxy S III to be updated with wireless charging and HD display

Samsung’s Galaxy S III has sold massive quantities, hitting the 30 million mark back in November 2012. In light of this, the Korean company will be releasing an updated version of the handset, something it has done with other smartphones for smaller markets. The updated version will include, among other things, an HD display.

samsung_galaxy_s_III_review_sg_0-540x3861

Samsung doesn’t typically roll out updated versions of its handsets in the US, but given the Galaxy S III’s rampant popularity, it would seem the company wants to take the device as far as it will go. Other handsets that have been revamped include the Galaxy S II Plus and the Galaxy S Advance back in 2012.

The information surfaced on Twitter courtesy of journalist Eldar Murtazin, who dropped a tweet with a few details earlier today and confirmed the Galaxy S III’s impending revamp. Although it isn’t an official statement, Murtazin has posted correct information in the past, including recently that the Galaxy S IV would be launched on March 14th in NYC.

According to a Google translation of the tweet, the refreshed Galaxy S III will feature an updated HD display, although it isn’t definitive if it will be 1080p. The battery will also get a boost to a 2400mAh capacity, and even better will feature wireless charging, something that was supposed to be a regular feature for the handset. The updated handset is said to be slated for arrival after the S IV is unveiled.

Google Now for iPhone and iPad video leaked on YouTube

A video that is said to be of Google Now for the iPhone and iPad was leaked onto YouTube earlier today, only to be pulled a short while later – not before it was downloaded, it would seem. The video has since been reappeared on the video sharing website, where it is still available for all to enjoy. You can check it out after the jump.

Screenshot from 2013-03-13 01:37:53

The video surfaced over at Engadget, where a tipster made its existence known. As they point out, a careful ear will note that the voice in the alleged promotional video sounds the same as the one featured in official Google Now promotional videos. That and the fact that it was pulled shortly after surfacing publicly gives it an air of legitimacy.

According to the video, using the iOS version of Google Now is as simple as “swiping up.” It provides all the goodies current users enjoy, including contextual data cards and alerts. This leak follows a non-functional tease of Google Now on Chromium, indicating that the service is at least finding its way to the desktop.

Of course, while it is nice to believe this to be a legit foreshadowing of what is to come, there are some other possibilities, the most of obvious one of which is forgery (although it would be quite a high-quality fake if that is the case). And it is also possible that this low-res promotional video shows a project that Google toyed around with but ultimately abandoned. For now, at least, the search engine giant hasn’t commented either way.

Hands-on video shows off Galaxy S IV test device

This week is when we’ll find out everything we ever wanted to know about the Samsung Galaxy S IV smartphone. The launch event is set to happen in only two days. While Thursday is the day when the smartphone will go official, rumors continue to circulate as fans clamor for more information.

samsung_galaxy_s4_mule_leak_3-580x382 (1)

Yesterday some images of a smartphone that looks more like the Galaxy Note II than the Galaxy S IV turned up. While on the outside the phone didn’t look like what we expected, the hardware on the inside lined up with rumors very nicely. That fact led us to believe that we may be looking at a Samsung test mule.

While we had several images of this test device yesterday, we didn’t have the hands-on video. The hands-on video that has turned up appears to be from the same person who took the images we showed you yesterday. In the hands-on video, the person shows you the battery and then spends a little time fiddling with the phone on video.

Considering the soundtrack, it seems like the guy forgot to turn off the TV which is rather annoying. Still, you can see the user interface and a few the applications that are running on the phone. It looks like the device responds quickly and this video will only help stoke the geek lust of all the people out there waiting to get their hands on the S IV. Stay tuned, we will be on hand at the Samsung Unpacked event and will bring you all the details on the S IV as they are unveiled.

BlackBerry acquisition speculation surfaces again thanks to Lenovo CEO

Remember back in January when Lenovo CFO Wong Wai Ming hinted at a possible acquisition of BlackBerry (formerly known as RIM)? After discrediting those rumors shortly after they surfaced, Lenovo is back with more chatter of the possibility of a BlackBerry buyout. Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing says that a BlackBerry acquisition “could possibly make sense.”

lenovo_ideaphone_k900_hands-on_sg_0-580x4072

According to Bloomberg, Yuanqing told French newspaper Les Echos that buying BlackBerry would be possible, but Lenovo would first “need to analyze the market and understand what exactly the importance of this company is.” These remarks are of similar timbre to Wong’s comments back in January, although Lenovo downplayed the significance of Wong’s comments.

Thanks to Yuanqing’s comments, though, BlackBerry shares rose 9.7% to $14.32 today, which was the company’s biggest midday gain since early last month. Shares closed at $14.87 for the day. When BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins was asked about the acquisition rumors, he slyly denied the claims and wasn’t sure why Lenovo would make such comments.

Of course, all acquisitions have to be approved by regulators first, especially any foreign acquisition. An acquisition of Canadian-based BlackBerry would have to be automatically reviewed by the Canadian government, since the company value is over $335 million. The approval process would be to determine whether the transactions are of “net benefit” to the country.

Amazon phone reportedly delayed until later this year

We’ve heard a lot about a possible Amazon smartphone last year, and rumors have been all over the place as far as what to expect and when to expect it. However, the latest rumor is that the supposed Amazon smartphone is delayed yet again and won’t see a reveal until later this year. The phone was previously expected to make an appearance sometime next quarter.

25213388_9CpSNn-580x4351

According to DigiTimes, sources at Foxconn say the production process of the new Amazon phone hasn’t been going smoothly. As for what the hold-up is, it’s said that the phone is “still under its engineering verification test (EVT) period due to issues related to its mobile platform.” Manufacturing of the phone is being handled by Foxconn subsidiary Ensky Tech, which has produced Amazon’s e-book readers and tablets in the past.

According to the sources, production of the phone was originally planned to begin sometime in June, but it looks like that timeline will be pushed back to later this year at some point. Of course, Amazon doesn’t need to be in any kind of a rush at this point, since the market is already saturated with iOS and Android, so it’s not like they need to beat anyone to the punch.

Of course, this rumor comes from DigiTimes, which has a mediocre track record as far as rumors go, so we’re taking this one with a grain of salt. In fact, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that the smartphone industry really isn’t something the company is interested in, but new devices would be on their way at some point in the future.
